Welcome Back
Welcome back to school for Term 3. We hope you had a fabulous winter break and have adjusted to the usual routines of the school term. We trust that you will enjoy another terrific term and continue to partner with us in building a positive culture and educational environment for our children.
Welcome New Staff
We welcome to Our Lady of Lourdes, Miss Michelle Drebing, who joins us in 3M class. Moving from the Gold Coast, Miss Drebing is most excited to join us at Lourdes. She had a great first week with the students of 3M. We also welcome Miss Siobhan Rush as School Officer assisting student learning predominantly in Year 2. Siobhan has been working for our 'Out of School Hours Care' so is no stranger to Lourdes.
Mr Golightly on Leave
Chris Golightly, Principal of OLOL, is now on leave and returns later this term. Last week he had surgery on his feet and as he stated in the last newsletter, it is all to improve his dance moves! We wish Chris a speedy recovery and hope he enjoys a well-earnt break. During his absence, I will be acting Principal and Middle Leader (Teaching & Learning) and Janice Moore will be acting Assistant Principal and still aims to fulfil many of her responsibilities as Assistant Principal Religious Education. We thank Mrs Sarah Goldthorpe for filling the fulltime teaching role in 3GM during this time. I am sure you will continue to support Janice and myself knowing that we are a reduced leadership team while Chris is on leave.
Mrs Salisbury on Leave
As you would most likely know, our remarkable PE teacher, Rachel Salisbury, had a lawn mower accident during the holidays where she was rushed to hospital for surgery to save her fingers and hand. She has had more surgery and is currently in Brisbane recovering in hospital. Your ongoing messages of support have been overwhelming and she is so thankful for your encouragement. She is happy to keep receiving your well wishes as these keep her going through this tough time. Any messages or queries related to school that Rachel would normally take care of, now need to be directed to Carla at the Admin Office. Mrs Deb Tully will take over as PE teacher for Prep- Year 2 and Mrs Helen Cruice will teach PE in Year 3- 6. We are very grateful two of our regular supply teachers have taken on a more permanent role whilst Rachel is recovering, and we thank them for helping us out. We keep Rachel in our thoughts and prayers as she continues to make her family, friends and her work colleagues very proud of her strength and persistence to overcome this injury and recover quickly.
Catholic Education Week
Catholic Education Week in 2021 will be celebrated in Queensland next week. The theme for 2021 celebrations will be A Spirited Tomorrow. This theme acknowledges the long tradition of Catholic education and its continued relevance in preparing students for the future.
Celebrated annually in Week 3 of Term 3, Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for all 309 Catholic schools in Queensland to celebrate and promote their distinctive mission and ethos. Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.
During Catholic Education Week we also have the opportunity to acknowledge the accomplishments, services and contributions of our staff to Catholic education. Congratulations to Mr Garry Birch for 40 years of service, Mr Larry Lee for 35 years of service and Mr Chris Golightly and Mrs Janice Moore for 25 years of service to Catholic Education. They will receive their Long Service Awards next week. We are very fortunate to have such dedicated staff at Lourdes.
Act as a Learner and a Global Citizen
For the first half of this term, each class will be focusing on a particular area of our CALLed to Think teaching and learning motto – Lourdes Learners Act as a learner and a global citizen. Recently, on the news, you would have heard about the significant victory of Australian, Ash Barty, winning Wimbledon. She is someone who demonstrates what it means to Act as a learner and a global citizen. Overcoming a hip injury a month ago, she fought to make her dream a reality. A video of her mindset coach talking about Ash’s success is floating around social media, in which he states that Ash has been able to concentrate on things she can control. He expresses the fact that we cannot control outcomes or other people’s expectations, so we must focus on what we can control. We must focus on how hard we try and the thoughts we tell ourselves – words that represent the best version of ourselves to build our self-confidence. Thus, the only expectations you can put on yourself is valuing your self-worth, working towards your goals and persisting to reach them.
At Lourdes, we aim to Act as a learner and global citizen by treating others with respect, attending and being on time to school, wearing the correct uniform, and placing a high value on learning. Your assistance with helping us instil these values in your children is most appreciated. We encourage our learners to set goals, persist when in the learning pit, and take responsibility for their own actions. Yet it is not only about setting goals; it is about the habits we repeat that determine our success.
Habits to Make a Change
Author of Atomic Habits, James Clear, states that many people think that they lack motivation to achieve goals, but it is clarity they lack. People go about setting goals; however, it is the environment and daily routines that shape human behaviour and determine success. If you want better results, it is not just about settings goals, it is about the clarity and systems in place to practice and reach goals. It does not really matter how long it takes for a habit to become automatic, what matters is that you take the actions to progress. Every time you practise the habit, you become that person and develop that identity. The goal should not be to read more books, but to become a reader in an environment where there are lots of books. The goal is not to write a book or write more, it is to become a writer. Every belief, including those about yourself, is learned and conditioned through experiences and your habits.
The more you repeat behaviour, the more you reinforce the identity associated with that behaviour. Every time you read, you are a reader. Every time you write, you are being a writer. Every time you play a sport, you're being an athlete. Habits are the path through which we forge our beliefs about ourselves - our sense of self. To change your habits is not to focus on what you want to achieve, but on what you wish to become. If you can change your habits, you can change your life. As James Clear suggests, decide on the person you want to be and prove it to yourself with small wins. What are the learning goals you and your child have set for this term? What are the systems in place at home to support the continual practice for self-improvement? What study area, homework routines and reading habits are in place that are conducive to learning? What small changes and routines can you and your family undertake to deliver big results? How can we all be the best versions of ourselves? A challenge for us all as we begin Term 3 and venture into the second half of 2021.
Upcoming Events
Co-curricular Events
As you will read throughout this newsletter, there are many fabulous opportunties on offer at Lourdes, including sporting events, academic opportunities, tech, chess, learning support, excursions, social justice awareness (raising money with dress up days) etc. etc. We hope your child makes the most of these great experiences.
Speaking Festival
Mrs Ebony Rosier (Years 3- 6 Drama Teacher and Mrs Amanda Holzheimer (P-2 Drama Teacher) have begun preparations for the Speaking Festival in Week 10. They will be sending out year level information shortly. Could you please support by encouraging your child to practise their piece at home. All students need to be ready to perform in Drama lessons in Week 6. Semi finalists will be announced in Week 8, Semi Finals will take place in Drama lessons in Week 9 and then Finals in Week 10.
Thanks for reading, Miranda.

Medication At School
Whether your child is required to take an over-the-counter medication (such as ibuprofen or paracetamol) or a prescribed medication, there are a number of policies and procedures that the school is required to follow regarding the administration of these medications to your child to ensure we meet our duty of care obligations.
- ALL medication MUST have a Pharmacy Label attached which clearly states the child’s name and dosage instructions and MUST be brought in in the Original Packaging - this also applies to all over-the-counter medications.
- Parents/caregivers are required to complete a relevant medication form which is available from the Administration Office. These forms are kept on file.
- Medications (subject to type of medication) are either kept in the classroom with the class teacher or in administration in a locked first aid cabinet.
- We are not able to accept medication delivered in snap-lock bags
We are unable to administer the medication if any of the above steps have not been completed.
Your support in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Paying School Fees
As you are aware, over the course of late last year and early this year we transitioned to a new accounts and enrolments system and a result of this, all families were given new Family ID codes, (which you can find located on the top left of your school statement).
If you are paying your school account via internet banking, it would be appreciated if you would please use in the reference section, your new Family ID code and surname (e.g. OLO000 Jackman) as per the attached example statement. This will assist greatly with receipting as it helps to eliminate the possibility of payments being coded to another family who may have the same surname.
Please also note our ADF bank account details on the bottom left of your invoice. We still have a few families paying their fees to our old Heritage Bank account and would be grateful if these families would update their records accordingly to pay into the ADF account.
Term 3 School Fees will be emailed out to families by the end of week 4.
STUDENT ABSENCES
If your child is absent from school for any reason, please contact our office either by phone 4591 1200 and/or email lourdes@twb.catholic.edu.au. Please advise your child's name, class, reason for absence and relationship to student (e.g. Hugh Jackman Class 6M, is unwell, thanks Mum Jackman).
If you have any questions in relation to any of the above, please contact us.
Thank you
Hazel
Report Cards
By now you would have received your child’s report card. A student who receives a C grade has typically shown their year level achievement and the teacher has sufficient evidence of learning to assign the overall grade for that learning area. An example of the 'C' definition is below:
Evidence of the student's work typically demonstrates that the student has the targeted knowledge and
- expected conceptual understanding
- expected application of skills
- they are able to transfer the above to familiar situations
Therefore, the 'C' result in any learning area subject is the expected result. For further clarification, the following list provides definitions of other key terms you will read in the report card:
Evidence- a range of information that teachers collect including data, work samples, digital media, teacher notes, formal assessment tasks.
Typically- allows for those students who may not have displayed this during a particular assessment task, but it is evident in their work with the frequency required within this grade. There are a range of opportunities provided to demonstrate student learning to obtain the reported grade and is not limited to one test or one assignment.
Conceptual Understanding- a connected web of knowledge, rich in relationships and understanding and must be learned by thoughtful, mental activity.
Sophistication- employing advanced or refined concepts.
Skills- these are often what students need to be able to do, for example, creating texts, asking questions, re-reading and editing, summarising, counting etc.
Transfer- the ability of a student to take their current knowledge, skills and understandings and apply this into a new scenario and/or different context; the ability to think about their thinking (metacognition) and reflect on their learning and understanding.
If you would like any further clarification around your child’s report card, please arrange a mutually convenient time to meet with your teacher.
ICAS Assessment
Our school will be offering the opportunity for your child in Year 4- 6 to participate in the ICAS Assessments this year. ICAS is developed by UNSW Global, a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of New South Wales, with over 35 years’ experience in educational assessments.
ICAS is designed to target students’ higher order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling and Digital Technologies. Top performers will be eligible for medals and are invited to attend special award ceremonies to have their academic excellence publicly recognised.
The assessments are suitable for students who are already achieving academically and would like to take up the personal challenge of participating in a demanding competition.
Students from Year 4- 6 can participate in this test. All ICAS Assessments will be conducted by the students online here at the school. ICAS testing will occur in August.
If you would like your child to participate, you will need to register and pay by the Sunday 25 July using the details provided below. The cost of the Writing Test is $21.45 while all the other tests are $17.05. You can decide which tests you would like your child to do.
Once registered, ICAS will provide details of the students registered to sit the tests. Further details will be provided to the parents and students regarding exam dates and the relevant equipment required to successfully complete the tests.

It was lovely to hear about everyone’s holidays and we enjoyed reading the holiday diaries.
Last week saw us jump straight back into our learning routines - new letter, new sound, new sight words and new word family!! Busy, busy!
Class newsletters were sent home outlining what is happening in our various curriculum areas. Please see us if you would like any further explanation.
Each child received their very first school report card - very exciting! Please celebrate their learning and give them a pat on the back! Being positive at home about school will encourage your child to be a Lourdes Learner.
All children must start the day with a jumper please.
Till next fortnight,
Liz and Melita
Year 1
Last week, we welcomed Oliver C to 1M and sadly farewelled Archie from 1B. We wish Archie all the best at his new school in Perth.
Unfortunately our excursion to the Japanese Gardens was cancelled today due to the weather. The intention was for the students to make observations and gather information and ideas to support them in their METS task for this term. The METS task involves students building a garden landscape for a Bee Bot to travel from a starting point to a finish. The students will consider the types of materials they will use when they build the features that will go in the landscape.
Last week, we read the text, TomTom by Rosemary Sullivan. We used the words that the author used and the images in the story to help us understand the character TomTom. Our new story is The Dot by Peter Reynolds.
Our new maths cycle is all about time; that is recognising and reading o’clock and half past time. Students will learn about the minute hand and the hour hand and will construct their own analogue clock.
In Science, the students will investigate materials and how they can be changed.
Jen and Ange

Every minute at school counts – we’ve all seen the advertisements and believe it or not, it’s true. Please, where possible, make appointments for your children after school. It’s disruptive to your child’s education to be picked up early or dropped off late, just to beat the traffic or to have an early mark. Check out the statistics below about how much time your child will have missed over their school years with regular absenteeism.

Guten Tag! This week we are doing some conversations about colours and next week we will be talking about holidays and trips.
Christine Fisher
This week we are providing information on specific learning disorder with impairment in reading (dyslexia). Once again, this information comes from AUSPELD: A Guide for Parents (2018). Over the rest of the term we will provide information about specific learning disorders.
- Specific learning disorder with impairment in written expression (dysgraphia)
- Specific learning disorder with impairment in mathematics (dyscalculia)
The difference between a learning difficulty and a learning disability
Many children do find learning the foundation skills in literacy and numeracy quite difficult and, if this is not addressed early, may go on to struggle in almost all areas of the curriculum for years to come.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) found in a recent survey that one in every two 15 to 19 year olds in Australia had such low literacy skills that they would not be able to meet the demands of a modern workplace.
Although some of these students may have a learning disability, many do not. They have not developed adequate skills due to a range of cumulative factors and are generally described as having learning difficulties.
Children with learning difficulties underachieve academically for a wide range of reasons, including factors such as: sensory impairment (weaknesses in vision or hearing); severe behavioural, psychological or emotional issues; English as a second language or dialect (ESL or ESD); high absenteeism; ineffective instruction; or, inadequate curricula. These children have the potential to achieve at age-appropriate levels once provided with programs that incorporate appropriate support and evidence-based instruction.
Children with learning disabilities have unexpected and persistent difficulties in specific areas of academic achievement as a result of an underlying neurodevelopmental disorder, the origin of which includes an interaction of genetic, cognitive and environmental factors. One of the defining features of a specific learning disability is that the difficulty continues to exist, despite appropriate instruction and intervention.
Children with a learning disability:
- have underlying difficulties in a key academic skill which have a lifelong impact;
- do not perceive or process information as efficiently or accurately as children without a learning disability;
- often have a family member with learning difficulties;
- do not respond to appropriate intervention in the expected way;
- do not have an intellectual disability and may have highly developed competencies in numerous areas.
What do we know about types of learning disabilities?
A specific learning disability (specific learning disorder) is characterised by persistent difficulties learning a key academic skill. This academic underachievement is unexpected, and is not the result of a more general learning difficulty, such as an intellectual disability. There are a number of specific learning disabilities that have the potential to impact on a student’s school performance:
- A specific learning disorder with impairment in reading, often referred to as dyslexia.
- A specific learning disorder with impairment in written expression, often referred to as dysgraphia.
- A specific learning disorder with impairment in mathematics, often referred to as dyscalculia.
Do students with specific learning disabilities learn differently?
Students with specific learning disabilities do not require an inherently different teaching approach in order to learn. Essentially, all students benefit from exposure to high-quality, evidence-based programs and teaching strategies, including explicit instruction and dual coding (the simultaneous presentation of verbal and visual information). However, this is especially the case for individuals with specific learning disabilities. The main learning difference observed between individuals with a specific learning disability and those without is the length of time it takes them to learn particular academic subskills. Individuals with specific learning disabilities often require more time and more repetition in order to master these skills. However, once they have mastered the skill, or developed an understanding of the new concept, they are likely to perform as well as, or possibly even better than, their peers. It is also the case that although individuals with learning disabilities have difficulty in specific areas, they will often excel in others.
We hope this information will clarify some of the misconceptions that are on the internet and in the media about learning difficulties and learning disabilities.

The lost thing* *Digital Book
Don’t judge a book by its cover!
At the end of last term we encouraged our older classes to look deeper into a text before choosing to borrow it. We wrapped the books in brown paper and placed a photocopy of the first page on the front to ‘read a little of the book’ before you ‘borrow’. Students are working on finding books, authors and stories or information that they LOVE!
Library TECH
This term in our Library Tech lessons we are brushing up on our definitions of all things Library and research including: Dewey decimal, plagiarism, copyright, OPAC, phishing, scam, virus, socials and so much more! We will also learn some really useful shortcuts for using Word.
The Olympic Games!
We are on the countdown to they Olympic games and are so excited to watch the Australian Medal Tally.

SPEAKING FESTIVAL 2021
Preparation for this year’s Speaking Festival is underway! Students have been learning their pieces in their drama lessons each week with Mrs Holzheimer (P-2) and Mrs Rosier (Yr 3-6). The year 4 and 6 students completed drama lessons last semester with Mrs Rosier, and those students who made it through to semi-finals will continue rehearsing on Wednesdays at lunch time. Prep students will also be working towards a group performance to share with you at the end of term (more details to come).
A copy of the pieces being learnt have been provided to students. Please encourage your child to continue working on their performance at home.
The Speaking Festival is an annual, whole school event which is a culmination of class work where children from P-6 are given the opportunity to develop their performance skills through poems and speaking pieces.
Below is a timeline for our performances:
Week 6 - Students in years 1, 2, 3 and 5 should be ready to perform their piece in drama lessons. (Years 4 and 6 have already done this last semester). This will form a major part of their drama assessment mark.
Week 9 – SEMI FINALS COMP Years 1-6 in drama lessons. These students will be notified by the end of week 8.
Week 10 – Mon 13th Sept SPEAKING FESTIVAL (FINALS). Keep an eye out for more information to follow.
We are looking forward to seeing our budding performers on stage! Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s drama teacher if you have any issues.

TCKC - Outside School Hours Care
We are so excited to have completed our very first vacation care here at Our Lady of Lourdes Outside School Hours Care. The stories we have to tell our friends, the fun we shared with those who were here and the food we made to fill our tummies was well worth. It was great to see the smiles and happiness that filled the OSHC space each day!
Vacation Care Highlights
Despite the rain that came through some of our most exciting days we did not let it dampen our spirits! The petting zoo gave smiles to all and oh my were those animals so cute and fluffy…We had a vote that the alpaca was certainly our favourite.
Wheels and helmets day… it rained on this day but we all put our safety hats on. Our senior group stepped up to show some leadership and assist our young riders to stay safe. Mrs Buckley, in the office, cheered us on.
We can only pick a few highlights when our whole vacation care was amazing! The food was epic, from home made pizza lunch, hot dogs, birthday cakes and failed donuts. We had the opportunity to make a variety of foods. It was awesome to see the children take an interest in making something different, to eat for morning or afternoon tea.
OSHC Catch-up
Our incredible Outside School Hours Care team have been working on something special to give you more of an insight of what happens over at OSHC. Each month we will have a OSHC catch-up that will emailed out to our enrolled families. A few copies will also be printed and placed in our school office, to offer an insight in what we do at OSHC each month.
Enrolments
If you are interested in enrolling please get in touch with our Outside School Hours Care team. We will be very happy to assist you with any enquiry, to ensure the enrolment process is as easy as possible.
Please get in touch if you have any questions.

Sarah Kelly and I would like to thank you all once again for allowing your children to purchase plants and gifts from Tim, Tyler and Darius' little plant stall last term. Roughly $720 was raised, which will go towards supplies for the music department. We hope to run another fantabulous little stall at the end of this term, so stay tuned.
