Classroom News

Prep

Welcome to Term 3.

It was lovely to hear about everyone’s holidays and we enjoyed reading the holiday diaries.

Last week saw us jump straight back into our learning routines - new letter, new sound, new sight words and new word family!! Busy, busy!

Class newsletters were sent home outlining what is happening in our various curriculum areas. Please see us if you would like any further explanation.

Each child received their very first school report card - very exciting! Please celebrate their learning and give them a pat on the back! Being positive at home about school will encourage your child to be a Lourdes Learner.

All children must start the day with a jumper please.

Till next fortnight,

Liz and Melita

Year 1

Last week, we welcomed Oliver C to 1M and sadly farewelled Archie from 1B. We wish Archie all the best at his new school in Perth.

Unfortunately our excursion to the Japanese Gardens was cancelled today due to the weather. The intention was for the students to make observations and gather information and ideas to support them in their METS task for this term. The METS task involves students building a garden landscape for a Bee Bot to travel from a starting point to a finish. The students will consider the types of materials they will use when they build the features that will go in the landscape.

Last week, we read the text, TomTom by Rosemary Sullivan. We used the words that the author used and the images in the story to help us understand the character TomTom. Our new story is The Dot by Peter Reynolds.

Our new maths cycle is all about time; that is recognising and reading o’clock and half past time. Students will learn about the minute hand and the hour hand and will construct their own analogue clock.

In Science, the students will investigate materials and how they can be changed.

Year 2

Welcome back everyone! It is lovely to see everyone returning to school with so much enthusiasm!  We are excited for a fresh start with lots of interesting new units of work as we become even better Lourdes Learners!

This half term in English we will be learning about different poetry styles and creating a poetry anthology which incorporates the different styles and techniques.

In Science we are learning about marvellous mixtures and in H.A.S.S we are learning about the olden days.

We will be exploring the You Can Do It Program for our Health this term, focusing on confidence, resilience and problem solving.

In art we are creating collages and doing some print making.  Please send in large cereal boxes and any collage bits and pieces such as fabric, yarn, plastic lids or different textured materials like cardboard, wood or plastic.

Pyjama day is tomorrow (Thursday) so don’t forget your gold coin donation.

On Friday the 30th of July we have a pupil free day. The teachers will be attending the Bishop’s Inservice Day.

We hope that Online Homework is going smoothly.  Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any queries.  We are more than happy to help!

Year 3

It was great to see everybody back last week and hearing about the holidays– we had a busy week looking at addition, fact/opinion, note-taking, unique places in Australia and what makes a living thing. We also loved our first dance lesson with Mrs Fisher and look forward to our second lesson next Friday. A special welcome to Miss Drebing, who is teaching 3M this semester – it is great to have you here at Lourdes! This week, we are continuing to look at note-taking, Australian landmarks and features, living things, addition and fractions. Students have brought home a poem to learn for the Speaking Festival – these are to be practised, ready for performing in class in Week 6.

The first Reconciliation parent session will be held this afternoon at 3:30pm and tomorrow (Thursday) is Pyjama Day – please remember to wear your Pyjamas, safe footwear and bring a gold coin donation. This Friday, we have our school disco from 5:30pm - 8:30pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

Don’t forget there is a pupil Free Day on Friday, 30th July. The Teachers are attending the Bishop’s In-service.

Have a great week!

Year 4

Welcome back to another term at Lourdes. An easy transition for term three last week, all children are well and truly ready to learn again. Report cards were sent home last week, this is a timely reminder for the children to set goals for their behaviour and learning. This term sees a few changes. Homework will be given out on a Monday/Tuesday and is expected to be completed by the following Tuesday. Sports uniforms are to be worn on Tuesdays and Fridays this term. Each second Friday, we will learn bush dancing under the expert guidance of Mrs Fisher.

Units studied this term include a History unit focused on the arrival of the First Fleet in Australia. As with many of our units we integrate others, and so in Religion we will study the early church of Australia and the early church in the time after Jesus’s death. Our Science and Mathematics units are also closely tied, using our newly learnt knowledge of measurement children will build a Roller Coaster and explore the topic of Forces.

Please check with your child if they are in need of any school supplies; whiteboard markers, rubbers and rulers may need replacing. This Thursday is Pyjama Day; children are asked to bring a gold coin donation. Friday evening from 5:30 to 8:30 pm is our school disco.

Have a great week!

Suzanne, Toni and Garry

Year 5

It is another busy term full of learning. Religion this term will be centered around Communities of Believers and different faiths, particularly Judaism. In English this term, the students will be focusing on the text type of procedure and narratives. The students will continue to develop their skills in reading, comprehension, spelling and handwriting.

We will be running our Pizza METS unit this term, so look forward to students bringing home some pizza making skills later this term. In Mathematics, there will be a continued effort to increase the quick recall of times tables and number facts whilst learning new concepts and problem solving strategies. In Science, the unit focuses on Adaptations and Survival of plants and animals in different environments.  This term we will be teaching an Information Technology unit working with algorithms and using apps such as SWAY and Greenscreen technology.

A few important events to be mindful of include: The Father’s Day stall, which Year 5 will run, Assemblies will commence in Week 2; 5M Week 3, 5F Week 4 and 5P Week 5.

Homework will begin next week with increased expectation around homework completion as we enter the second half of the year. We hope you have a wonderful week.

Arriving late and Leaving Early

Every minute at school counts – we’ve all seen the advertisements and believe it or not, it’s true.  Please, where possible, make appointments for your children after school.  It’s disruptive to your child’s education to be picked up early or dropped off late, just to beat the traffic or to have an early mark.  Check out the statistics below about how much time your child will have missed over their school years with regular absenteeism.
