Dear Parents & Carers
Welcome once again to the beginning of a new school term. So good to see everyone back safe and sound from the Easter holiday and trust that you all enjoyed the time with family and friends.
Term 2 is traditionally a very busy and demanding period of the school year. With plenty of teaching and learning, assessment tasks and reporting to be done. It is paramount that children need to be present and engaged in the learning process. Regular absence from school only compounds problems associated with students completing all required tasks. If they are at school, students receive the necessary information and specialized assistance and this in-turn reduces stress levels for the student and in the home.
In addition to their day to day learning, other significant school related activities which occur this term include: - ANZAC Day commemorations, Cross Country carnivals, Athletics training and carnivals, Mothers’ Day celebrations, NAPLAN (Yrs. 3 & 5), School Photos, Confirmation/First Communion and ballgames carnival, just to name a few.
With the colder weather approaching parents need to be mindful of the onset of the cold and flu season which can take its toll on students, staff and parents. In this regard, I would certainly urge all parents to take the time to instill proper hygiene practices to help reduce the spread of such illnesses. I would also encourage parents to strongly consider influenza vaccinations for all family members.
When you think about it there is an enormous amount to learn when you are a kid. There are, of course, the foundational skills of literacy and numeracy, fine and gross motor skills, spatial awareness, knowledge of their place in the world, understanding of others in the world, local and national identity, maybe learning another language or a musical instrument, skill acquisition for various sports, etc. In addition to these are the social and emotional skills required to happily co-exist with their peers, siblings and important adults in their lives. It certainly is a lot to take on for anyone, let alone a primary school aged child. So, it is important to keep all this in mind as your child progresses through the year. There will be times where they will experience difficulty in one or two of these areas, this is called growing up. We all know that kids develop at different rates and to expect each and every child to be an expert in all areas, at the same time, is impossible.
We hope that throughout the year, our school will be a place where staff, students and families have opportunities to experience success and enjoyment. Within our school, we can all try to model respect of those around us and strive to be a community where all members are valued, affirmed and empowered. For this sentiment to continue throughout the year, it will require our collective wisdom and generosity of spirit to be at the forefront of all our communications.
Education today is a complex engagement because of the intensity and variety of external influences particularly through various forms of media and electronic communications. Our school has a special role in assisting every parent with the education of their children, so that all children will develop a sense of personal responsibility and learn the correct use of freedom. Throughout the term, our school will once again provide various experiences of liturgy and prayer, academic studies, cultural pursuits, sporting events and personal development enhancement to assist the intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual maturity of all our students.
The success of these experiences depends highly on the continual positive relationship between the child and their teacher and ongoing parental support of the teacher. Our role as the most important adults in children’s lives is a collective one and the power of unity should never be underestimated.
Have a great term and I look forward to the many exciting events and milestones which lay ahead in the coming months.
Cross Country
Thank you so much for your support at our cross country carnival which was held last week at Newtown Park. The number of parents in attendance was so good to see and assistance from parents was greatly appreciated. Congratulations to all students who participated and special well done to Beetson House in taking out the trophy. A big thank you as well to Mrs Salisbury for her efforts in organising a highly successful carnival and to the staff and sports captains who helped out throughout the day.
ANZAC Day
My appreciation to our Year 5 classes for organising last Friday’s ANZAC Day assembly. This was once again a very special occasion with all students paying upmost respect. Thank you to Miss Packer, Mrs McKay and Mr Franzmann for your efforts in preparing the students for the assembly.
Winter Uniform
A reminder to all families that the changeover to the winter uniform will occur after the Labour Day long weekend, Tuesday 4th May. I do understand that there is a delay in some winter uniform items particularly the girls’ tunic and school track top. With this in mind, flexibility will be granted for the next couple of weeks or until sufficient stock has arrived at Hannas.
Once stock has arrived, please ensure that your children have all the necessary uniform items. This includes the appropriate jumpers and jackets. The school has a navy blue fleecy pullover and or woolen knitted jumper(optional) and a navy blue track top both with the school emblem. These are the only jumpers which are to be worn. For colder days or those who feel the cold, children are permitted to wear both at the same time. Scarves and gloves are also permitted but must be in school colours e.g., navy blue. We have on sale school beanies if children wish to wear one during those colder days. Alternate coloured jumpers and winter accessories are not permitted. The school provides a clothing pool for the convenience of families in regard to the supply of second hand uniform items.
Mother's Day
We will be once again celebrating this special occasion with our traditional Mother’s Day Mass on Wednesday 5th May at 10:00 am in the Hall. Parents are most welcome to attend.
Our annual Mother’s Day Stall will be held on Friday 7th May. To assist with the stall, we are requesting donations of suitable Mother’s Day gifts which the children can purchase for their Mums in readiness for Mother’s Day. Please forward all donated gifts to your child’s teacher.
2022 Prep Enrolments
This week I will be making a final decision on Prep placements for the 2022 school year. Once again, we have been overwhelmed by the demand for enrolment and it has been rewarding to hear that the main reason families have applied is because of the great reputation our school has in the community.
Siblings of existing students receive automatic placement into the Prep program, however we still require an application for enrolment form to be handed in. The families concerned will receive confirmation in the mail within the next two weeks. If you are unsure whether or not you have applied for enrolment for your son or daughter for Prep next year, please contact the office.
I ask for your assistance regarding your knowledge of any other families who may be thinking about enrolling their child or children here at Lourdes in any year level, to inform them to contact the school at their earliest convenience. Prior knowledge of accurate enrolment numbers for the following year greatly assists the school in providing appropriate levels of staffing and classroom resourcing.
Parking
We have once again received complaints from the Toowoomba Regional Council about illegal parking practices (blocking driveways, ignoring no parking signs etc.) particularly parents utilizing Wallace Street. Further patrols by council and police will occur over the next few weeks.
School Fees
Term 2 school fees will be emailed home in Week 4 of this term. Please ensure you check your emails for these invoices. It is vital that all families meet their financial commitment to the school on a timely basis. Families with outstanding balances from Term 1 will be contacted shortly by the school. Remember, there are numerous ways families can pay fees and concessions are available for any family experiencing genuine financial difficultly. Without your financial support, the school is unable to continue the excellent level of resources and facilities which benefit all the students who attend. We strive to keep fees and levies as low as possible and in comparison, with other “like” schools, our fees are one of the lowest on offer. Thank you in anticipation of the timely payment of fees.
Thanks for reading…

Prep
Welcome back term 2. We hope you had a lovely Easter break and enjoyed time at home together.
This week we are getting back into the swing of things. We will revise the important components of being a Lourdes Learner and school behaviours. It is imperative now that the good routines we worked so hard to establish last term are revised and maintained.
Already this term we have commenced with two new letters of the week, Gg and Oo, our word families ‘at’ and ‘am’, and our new sight words. We will also begin learning about the comprehension strategy of retell – focusing on the beginning, middle and end of a story.
In Maths we continue to revise and reinforce the numbers from 1 to 10 and counting on from a given number – not just 1.
Over the holidays, the weather certainly changed, and the cool air can be felt in the mornings. Please ensure all children have a jumper at school daily and it is clearly named.
Please remember to read nightly, practising sight words and letters and sounds learnt. We do have a few short weeks in the calendar, but our program continues.
Library borrowing day is on Wednesday for both classes.
Don’t forget to read all of the articles in the newsletter to keep up to date with school events.
We look forward to another great term.
Liz and Melita
Year 1
Welcome to Term Two. We hope that everyone had a lovely Easter.
After reading the text, ANZAC Biscuits by Phil Cummings last week, the students in Year One followed a recipe to make ANZAC biscuits. We hope that our families enjoyed eating them.
In English, the students will focus on writing literary retells using the books, There's a Sea in My Bedroom by Margaret Wild and Too Many Pears by Jackie French. The children will write about a character in the story and will explore the texts to write about the most important parts from the beginning, middle and end.
In Maths, we will be investigating patterns using objects and numbers. The children will take what they know about patterns to help them count in twos, fives and tens.
In Science, we will look at changes around us, paying particular attention to day and night changes, the weather and the seasons.
As the weather begins to change and become cooler, please remember to label all items of clothing.
Jen and Ange
Year 2
Welcome to week 2! We hope that everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather over the long week-end. The Year 2s have been working hard and have settled into Term 2 very well! Our trip to the zoo was very exciting and students learnt so much about many different animals. Thanks to the parents who came with us for the day. Your help was very much appreciated!
The Year 2s have been exploring fairy tales, studying the characters and analysing stereotypes. This will lead us into creating alternative character attributes for characters.
Towards the end of the term we will be having a Mad Hatters Tea Party. Students can come dressed up in any fairy tale costume.
In Maths we are working with numbers up to 1000, focusing on arranging them in order, as well as looking at number sequences and patterns. In Religion we are studying the world in which Jesus lived, finding out about the customs and culture of the time. In Hass we are exploring our world and how it is divided, studying continents and countries and identifying where they are in relation to the equator and the hemispheres.
Our Mother’s Day Mass is being held on the 5th May. If you would like to share a special ‘Mum’ photo at Mass, please email it to Janice.Moore@twb.catholic.edu.au
Please remember to bring in a Mother’s Day gift for our stall on the 7th of May. Students who have brought in a donation will be able to purchase a gift for $2.
Please contact us if you have any concerns or questions!
Dennielle, Allyson, Sarah, Aleisha and Megan
Year 3
Welcome back! We hope everybody had a blessed Easter and all students enjoyed their break. This term, we will continue to develop our persuasive writing skills and look at text connections. We have started to read ‘The Midnight Gang’ in preparation for our Empire Theatre excursion in Week 5. A note about this excursion went home last week; please let us know if you did not receive one.
In HASS this term, we will be looking at how our local community has changed over time and in Science we will be exploring the Sun, Earth and Moon and how they relate to each other.
We will change over to Winter uniform on the 4th of May.
Last Friday we commemorated ANZAC Day with a liturgy led by the Year 5 classes.
Please send photos for the Mother’s Day Mass (one photo per family) to Mrs Moore by this Friday, 30th April.
Have a great week!
Angela, Sarah, Damian and Janice
Year 4
Welcome back to Term 2! It was certainly as very busy start to the Term last week. It was great to see everyone looking smart for school photos last Thursday. Many thanks to Mrs Salisbury for organising our Cross Country last Wednesday – wasn’t it a beautiful day! Congratulations to everyone that participated on the day – it is a big effort! Well done to the Year 4 placegetters – Arohamae, Charlotte B, Mikayla Cooper, Olivia and Isabel. Best of luck to Olivia, Isabel, Blake, Harris, Leila and Max when they complete at the West Zone trials this Friday.
Congratulations to Year 5 and their ANZAC Day Assembly last Friday – it was a great reminder of how grateful we are, to the armed forces. This is another short week, as is next week – so it is important that students are at school as much as possible.
A couple of reminders – Mothers’ Day gifts can be sent into teachers as soon as possible – the Mothers’ Day Stall in on next Friday 7th May! Students are required to change over to the Winter Formal uniform next Tuesday. Homework begins this week.
Year 3 and 4 students have an upcoming excursion to the Empire Theatre in Week 5. Last week, students were given permission notes for this event. Many thanks to Mrs Moore for all her work in organising Confirmation and First Communion – best of luck to all students involved.
As we will not have another newsletter before Mothers’ Day, Garry, Toni and Suzanne would like to take the time to wish all mothers, grandmothers and mother figures, a blessed Mothers’ Day on Sunday 9th May. Where would we be without you?
Suzanne, Toni and Garry
Year 5
Term 2 started off with a bang with Cross Country, School Photos and our ANZAC day ceremony. We would like to commend the Year 5’s on their reverence and respect for service men and women during this commemoration. Mr Golightly spoke to the students Tuesday morning about how he had many reports he had from members of the community about the wonderful job they all did. They thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to talk with Corporal Jason Erbacher before our ANZAC day liturgy learning about life in the army and his service in Iraq and Afghanistan.
We welcome a few new faces to our Lady of Lourdes community. Tiana Howell and Madison Faranda have joined Mr Franzmann's class. We also welcome Miss Natalya Kajewski (aka Miss K) to Mrs McKay's class for the next 4 weeks. Miss K is completing her Masters in Education and in her spare time is a speech pathologist working with Ed QLD. Sadly, we will be farewelling the Mohammed Ali family who are relocating to Sydney. We wish them all the best and safe travels as they begin a new adventure.
RE
Students will develop their understanding of the Holy Spirit and how it applies to their lives. They will analyse and interpret Scriptural passages that refer to the Holy Spirit and the words, symbols and actions of the Catholic Rite of Confirmation.
ENGLISH
Term 2 brings revision and new rounds of learning. We will spend time revising Persuasive writing structure and language features in week 2 and will move into Narrative writing from week 3. Our Historical Narrative unit with focus on structuring a Narrative based in the time of the Eureka Stockade. We will be focusing on presenting a perspective from a person in that time, sentence types, developing ideas and harnessing the skills of descriptive vocabulary and figurative language explored in term 1. Students will be perfecting their planning, writing and editing skills as we move towards NAPLAN in week 4.
MATHS
This term we will be conducting three impact cycles. Cycle one will cover interpreting data and constructing side by side column, line graphs and dot plots. Cycle two will investigate measurement (length, perimeter, area, mass) and grid reference systems which will link with HASS and the gold rush. Our final cycle will explore fractions; adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator, and, ordering and locating fractions on a number line. A continued focus this term will be on the 4 operations, especially multiplication and division (with remainders including fractional and decimal). Times tables while a boring and monotonous task, is essential to student success. Practise! Practise! Practise!
HASS
Students will examine the effects of a The Gold Rush and the Eureka Rebellion on the Australian Colonies. They will then explain its economic, social and political impact on the colony. Students will also investigate the role that a significant individual or group played in shaping and changing a colony e.g. Peter Lalor. Exploring the motivations and actions of individuals or groups, students will follow an inquiry process to develop a historical narrative. Students will also explore Democracy in Australia and the key features of the Australian electoral process.
SCIENCE
In this Science and Technology unit, students will consider Earth as a component within a solar system and use models for investigating systems at astronomical scales. They will understand that Earth is part of a system of planets and other celestial bodies, orbiting around a star. Students will research Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ understanding of the night sky and how scientists were able to develop ideas about the solar system through the gathering of evidence through space exploration. They will also recognise how technologies developed to aid space exploration have changed the way people live, work and communicate.
Mothers Day Mass and Stall
Mothers Day Mass is on the 5th May at 10am in the school hall.
Don’t forget to please bring in Mothers Day Stall donations. Mothers Day stall will be operation in on the 7th May.
Homework
Just a reminder that homework starts again this week. Students will have Reading Logs, Maths Online and Spelling Vocabulary A-Z.
Thank you to the Bonnie Fairbanks and the Fairbanks family for their lovely presentation and gift of purple donuts, and a big thank you to Gus Goddard (Claire's older brother) for coming in to share his story as well. All the Year 5 students thoroughly enjoyed the Epilepsy Awareness Presentation, and have gained some wonderful insight into what epilepsy is and how we can support those around us that are epileptic.

Thank you to Beeston House students for organising a fitness morning. Unfortunately, this was cancelled due to Covid restrictions. However, we will plan for this to still go ahead early this term.
Thank you to Bradman House for supplying eggs for our younger students to enjoy an egg hunt and reflecting on the meaning of Easter to create artwork for our school office.
Fraser House students examined Global Citizenship and how they can connect this to Catholic Social Teachings of Human Dignity, Preferential Option for the Poor, Care for our Common Home, Subsidiarity and Participation, The Common Good, Solidarity, Economic Justice, Stewardship of Creation and Promotion of Peace.

Thank you, Year 6 students, for acting as global citizens and assisting at our cross-country last week. Your efforts of encouragement, participation and spirit make you truly live out the Lourdes Way. Congratulations to all runners heading to West Zone this coming Friday- good luck!

Welcome to Term 2. Learning Support will continue to include information on a range of topics this term. If there is something that you would like to know more about, please let me us know. You can email requests to Allyson.Jessen@twb.catholic.edu.au
What is Speech Language Pathology?
Toowoomba Catholic Schools Office provides a Speech Language Pathology (SLP) service. Recently the service was reviewed to enhance the delivery of speech pathology services across the Diocese of Toowoomba.
What does the service look like?
There are three full time Speech Pathology Advisor positions within the Diocese of Toowoomba, which are currently filled by three full time employees. These positions cover all 31 schools within the Diocese.
What is the role of the speech language pathology advisor in schools?
SLP Advisors provide support to school staff and students utilising an educational therapy model with a priority focus on building teacher capacity and early intervention. The primary clients of the SLP Advisors are the Class Teacher (CT) and the Learning Support Teacher (LST).
SLP Advisors provide support to teachers and other school staff to identify students with communication needs and build their capacity to support individual student learning in the classroom.
What support will my child receive?
SLP Advisors build capacity of school staff to understand the speech and language needs of their students. SLP Advisors also work with school teams to upskill and support staff to plan for personalised learning and determine relevant adjustments and differentiation for the whole class or with individual students.
Will my child still be withdrawn from the classroom to complete a program?
Research suggests that students learn best when they are in the classroom learning alongside their peers. Your child will receive support through adjustments and differentiation to enhance their participation in the classroom. We recognise that targeted intervention is required at times to enhance specific skills to allow a student to access to the Australian Curriculum. On occasions, your child may work with support staff to focus on specific skill development which will be planned for with the class teacher and support staff.
Is a hearing assessment required for a consultation/referral?
A full audiological assessment is recommended and may be required if a comprehensive speech and/or language assessment is requested for your child.
Adequate hearing is essential for a child’s speech and language development. Hearing loss can have a direct impact on a child’s learning.
Can I access private therapy if my child receives support through school?
Yes. If you are concerned about your child’s communication skills, we recommend that you access external speech pathology services. A list of external services throughout the Toowoomba Diocese can be provided upon request.

All students in grade 3, who are born in 2013, will participate in the 2012, or 9 year’s, category for field events – High Jump and Long Jump ONLY. However, as they are not of appropriate age, they will not participate in Discus and Shot Put, nor will they be eligible for age championship points. They will simply be participating in these events to provide them with a valuable experience and to gain participation house points.
Nominating for Events – Grade 3-6 Students
All students will be required to participate in their respective sprint (80 or 100m), 200m, Long Jump, High jump, Shot Put and Discus (Except 8-year-olds). They will be automatically entered into the program for these events.
The 800m is the only event that students will need to nominate for. This information will be collected from the students during their PE classes.
Points Allocation - Individual Age-Championship & House Points
The following points will be awarded to individual athletes and their respective houses according to the overall places that they obtain in each event. Heats will be run for all track events (in the 9-12 year’s category), except for the 800m. One participation point will go towards each students’ individual and house tally following these heats. Subsequently, finals will then take place to award the major individual age championship points and house points, as below. These points will also be awarded to all 9-12 year old’s for field events.
1st Place – 10 points (Blue Ribbon), 2nd Place – 6 points (Red Ribbon), 3rd Place – 4 Points (Green Ribbon), 4th Place – 2 Points (Yellow Ribbon) and 1 Point - 5th place onwards.
80m, 100m & 200m Final Qualifications
All 80m, 100m and 200m events will be timed and the fastest 8-9 runners will proceed to the final. All students will be required to remain at the finish line until all heats in their age group have been run. Finalists will then be named, and they will proceed directly to the track marshals to run their respective final.

No presentations will be held at the oval. A special assembly will be conducted to present all age champions from 2012-2009 and winning houses on Thursday 3rd June at 2:00pm. As with Swimming and cross country, medallions will be presented to age champions in the 9-12 years age category.
Catholic Carnival and West Zone Carnival Team Selection
Following the school athletics carnival, Our Lady of Lourdes will be selecting a team to represent the school at the Catholic Carnival and West Zone Carnival. Only students born 2009-2012 are eligible for team selection. OLOL are limited to the following numbers of entries in both carnivals:
80/100 & 200m |
3 students per age group |
800m |
2 students per age group |
Field events |
2 students per age group. |
Please note: Only students born 2009-2011 are eligible to participate in the Shot Put and the Discus at zone level.
Students born 2016-2013 are also offered the opportunity to participate in the track events at the Catholic Athletics Carnival. The top 3 runners in each age group will be selected.
More information regarding the school athletics team will be made available at a later date.
Absence from the school carnival
If your child is unable to attend one or both days of the school athletics carnival, and they would like to be considered for the school team, please contact me on the details below. The school will grant exemptions on the same grounds as Darling Downs School Sport. These grounds for exemption are as follows:
- Medical condition on the day of the carnival & they have a medical certificate.
- Attending another Zone, Toowoomba, Darling Downs, Queensland School Sport or School Sport Australia Championships or equivalent in community sports.
- Bereavement or compassionate reasons
If one or more of these conditions have been met, the school will organize to record times and distances for the affected student, preferably prior to the carnival, as a means of team selection. It is important to note that these times and distances will only be considered for placement in the school team, and not to go towards Age Championship Points. To be awarded age champion the student must attend the school carnival. Please contact me if you require further clarification.
House Colour Dress
Students required to wear their house colours on the day. Please be mindful when choosing your clothing for the day. It is important that what you wear does not restrict your movement and is appropriate for competing in.
Canteen
To be confirmed.
Helpers/Volunteers
If you are available to help with marshaling, timekeeping, scoring, amongst other jobs, please email me on the address below. It is not possible to run the event successfully without the help of our parents. Thank you in anticipation of your assistance.

Representative Sport—Toowoomba & Darling Downs Teams
Throughout the course of the year Toowoomba Primary School Sport and Darling Downs School Sport offer trials to eligible students for a variety of team and individual sports. To be eligible for selection, students need to be born in 2011, 2010 or 2009. Strict nomination requirements apply, and it is at the sole discretion of the school to decide whether to nominate individual students.
In order to gain interest levels and an idea of previous experience, a representative Sport Nomination Form will go home this week. This form outlines all relevant information regarding the trials for the whole of 2021. Please thoroughly read all information. If your child is of a high standard in their chosen sport/s and would like to be considered for nomination, please complete the nomination form and return to Ms. Salisbury ASAP. No student will be nominated for a trial without a completed form.

Borrowing Reminders
Students in Year 1 – 6 are able to borrow up to 6 items each week.
Parents are always welcome to join the Library service and borrow 10 additional items for your family.
Library Bags are essential to protect books on their journey to and from school. Please ensure your child has a Library Bag or satchel each week on their Library day.
Digital Reading
Don’t forget in addition to the physical books you can borrow from our Library our student subscriptions can be used for digital reading too. Dedicate some of your child’s allocated ‘screen time’ to READING EGGS or SUNSHINE ONLINE. Sunshine online has been updated and the APP is no longer compatible. You should be able to use the program via the link on AccessIt (our Library Homepage).
Typing Tournament
Typing skills are essential skills. Each student in Year 2-6 at Lourdes has access to Typing Tournament to help them learn how to touch type. Logon to Typing Tournament via AccessIt.
Tech Club
Tech Club will run a little differently this term. We have been lucky enough to secure the team from IntegratedSTEM to run their NEW ‘Discover Drones’ program at Lourdes. This brand new program will inspire your child to learn how drones are used in the real-world hands-on through a number of pilot and programming challenges. They will also delve deep into advanced technologies; teaching students the skills to develop their own bespoke ag-tech machine vision and artificial intelligence algorithms for object detection applications - inspired by the research our founder has conducted with John Deere tractors! Please complete the ONLINE REGISTRATION and return the form to school as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. There are only a FEW spaces remaining.
Book Club
Book Club orders for Issue 2 have been delivered. We will not be handing out brochures for Issue 3 as BOOK FAIR is coming to Lourdes. Book Club will return later this term in Issue 4. For any issues with Book Club please contact: Danielle.Leathart@twb.catholic.edu.au

Chess lessons will return to Lourdes in Term 2 with Mr Lord. Lessons run each Tuesday morning from Week 2 – 9 from 7:45am – 8:30am. Please collect a permission form from the Office or the Library and return it as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Spaces are limited.

Thank you so much to everyone, for supporting Tim, Tyler and Darius during their plant stall last month. It was a huge success. The kids were so excited and are really interested in the plants that we are growing for the next stall. $380 was raised for Caritas.
If any of you have any old plastic pots that you don't want, we would greatly appreciate them. Just leave them behind the church please.
The school garden is looking so lovely this Autumn, that I just had to share some photos.
