Dear Families,
It is hard to believe that the 2024 school year is coming to a close. With only two and a half weeks to go, the school is buzzing with learning, assessment, extra sporting opportunities, and Christmas carol preparations. This is also the time of the year where the 2025 budget is finalised, along with staffing. All decisions that are made for the following year, are carefully considered, ensuring our Lourdes Learners have the environment to continue to achieve their best, in 2025.
Staffing Changes
Rachel Wigan- Rachel has accepted a position with Toowoomba Catholic Schools, as school sports coordinator. Rachel has been at OLOL for 14 years, and her expertise and passion will be greatly missed.
Garry Birch- Garry is retiring at the end of 2024. Garry will remain a familiar face at Lourdes as a grandfather.
Sandra Rosentreter- Sandra has accepted a permanent position at Holy Name.
Amanda Holzheimer- Amanda is taking leave for 2025.
Greg Arnold- Greg is retiring from his role as Crossing Supervisor. We thank Greg for ensuring our Lourdes students, arrive to school safe and sound each day.
Will Connolly and Elara Salisbury- Will and Elara have completed school-based traineeships at Lourdes and have both been offered early entry at the University of Southern Queensland. Congratulations Will and Elara!
Class Teacher Allocation
On Friday December 6, reports cards and class teacher allocation will be sent to families via the Sentral App. I would like to thank our classroom teachers, leadership and learning support team, for the considered approach in this process. We ask that you trust our staff in the decisions that have been made. Please note, that it is not our usual practice to change any student or teacher, once allocations have been distributed to families.
When allocating classes for next year, we consider student numbers, student needs, teacher strengths, school budget, capacity for growth and our school culture. In 2025, we will have 3 classes from Prep to Year 5 and 2 classes for Year 6. Student movement in Year 6, has impacted numbers in this grade level. Mrs Coren and Mrs McKenzie will be our Year 6 teachers. They are experienced teachers, with strengths in curriculum, knowing the needs of their learners, setting high expectations for behaviour and learning, and setting a strong culture of service.

Reports
We are approaching the end of the school year, and as such, teachers are in the process of finalising reports. As with all reporting periods, students are graded against the end of year achievement standard, set by the Australian Curriculum and Reporting Authority. In conjunction with assessment and achievement, teachers also make judgements on students' efforts. Our effort marks incorporate the traits of a Lourdes Learner and provide teachers, and our students, a five-point scale to reflect on their effort and engagement in learning. For our Leadership Team, reading through the reports of each student is a rewarding process and affirms that wonderful teaching and learning is occurring in our school. Enjoy the summer holidays and we look forward to sharing in another year of fabulous Teaching and Learning in 2025.

The time has come.... our final newsletter item!
The last two weeks have been very rewarding as we have assessed the growth of each child and celebrated their success. It is certainly very exciting to become a reader, writer, mathematician, architect, and artist, especially when you are only five or six years old. Well done, Preps! Over the next two and a half weeks, we will revise and consolidate all our learning to ensure that it is solidly held in our long-term memory banks.
Some final reminders:
28 November - Nursing Home Visit:
To perform their Christmas songs for the residents, some of the Prep students will attend BlueCare Nursing Home, while the others will attend Lourdes Home for the Aged. We ask that you send along a named Santa hat for your child to wear on the day. Please provide permission on the Parent Portal.
29 November - Prep Retreat at Newtown Park:
The Preps will be taken to Newtown Park for a retreat organised by Mrs Moore. On this day, we ask that you send in a towel for your child to sit on and apply sunscreen in the morning.
4 December - Christmas Concert:
Preparations are underway for our upcoming Christmas concert. The Prep to Year 2 concert will take place at 2:00pm in the hall. A white shirt is to be worn on the day.
5 December - Gymnastics Excursion:
The children will participate in their final gymnastic excursion for the year. Please provide permission on the Parent Portal.
6 December - Final Mass:
Our final Mass will take place on Friday, 6 December at noon. Children may go home after the Mass. Otherwise, we will enjoy an afternoon of play, Christmas activities, and carols!
2025 Uniforms:
As you start to prepare for Year 1, please note that the students are to wear black school shoes with their formal uniform, and either all black or all white joggers with their sports uniform. Pre-loved uniforms may be purchased through our Second-hand Uniform shop or purchased new from Hannas.
Thank you to all our families for an incredible year! Christmas blessings to all.
Melita, Amy and Becky
Year 1
It is that time of year already! The trees and tinsel are out and we are looking forward to learning about the traditions of Christmas around the world. In Santa’s workshop, we will follow procedures to create some of the special Christmas symbols as we learn about the meaning behind them.
As we reflect back on the year, what a busy but great time it has been in Year One! The children have worked hard to achieve their goals and have grown so much as Lourdes Learners. They have become fluent readers, creative writers, mathematicians and problem solvers. We are very proud of them and all that they have accomplished.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the Christmas concert on Wednesday 4th December at 2pm. Children in Year 1 will need a red shirt to wear on the day, along with their sports shorts and shoes.
On Thursday 5th December, the children will participate in their final gymnastics excursion to All Stars. Please ensure you have completed the permission form on the Parent Portal.
Our End of Year Mass will be held at 12pm on Friday 6th December. Children may leave after completion of the Mass if you wish, however we do ask that they return to their classrooms first so that we can finalise the roll and ensure all belongings are collected.
Please continue sending in donations for the Minni Vinnie’s Christmas Hampers in our classrooms.
We appreciate all your support over the year. May you all have a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.
Laura, Jenny and Dennielle
Year 2
Wow – what a fabulous year we have had in Year 2! We have a few important things happening as we count down to the holidays. The Prep-Year 2 Christmas Carols will be held on Wednesday 4th December in the Hall at 2 pm. Students have been practicing well for their songs, which promises to be a great performance. A reminder that students are to wear the following coloured shirt: Year 2 – Green. Students can wear this coloured T-shirt to school. School shorts, socks, and shoes are to be worn to school as usual.
Cinema excursion: Monday 2nd December - we will be going to the movies for our end-of-year excursion. Please ensure that all permission forms have been submitted as soon as possible.
Last Day of School: Friday 6th December – students may depart after the end-of-year Mass which will take place in the hall at 12 noon.
Remember to bring in Secret Santa gifts if you have not yet, and items for the St Vincent de Paul hampers.
Thank you to all families for your wonderful support this year and we wish you all a very happy and safe Christmas and New Year!
Ange, Ange and Sarah
Year 3
This is our final classroom news for Year 3, so we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support throughout the year. You have contributed to your child’s success this year, through your presence at school events, assisting with homework, and supporting them with daily routines such as ensuring they are at school on time, you are instilling the importance of education.
During the last two weeks of school, we will be learning about the significance of Christmas through the lens of our Catholic faith, the values it teaches us, and how we celebrate it within our own families. This will include exchanging gifts, learning Christmas Carols for our Christmas Concert, and sharing Christmas stories.
If you have not yet nominated your child to participate in events at the swimming carnival, this needs to be completed in the Parent Portal by Sunday the 24th of November.
We would like to also remind families that all library books are due this Friday (22nd Nov). Families will be charged for overdue books after this date.
We are looking forward to seeing many faces at our Christmas Concert on Wednesday the 4th of December.
Key dates. More information will be communicated to parents closer to the date.
- Years 3 – 6 Christmas Concert - Wednesday 4 December at 11:30am
- Swimming Carnival - Thursday 5 December
- End of Year Mass - Friday 6 December at 12:00 noon
Thanks for reading,
Mel, Demi, and Renee
Year 4
What an awesome year it has been! The Year 4s have grown in so many ways and we have enjoyed seeing their progress as learners and watching them grow in confidence and maturity.
We are all looking forward to the activities in the coming weeks.
Please fill in the swimming nomination form even if your child is not attending the Swimming Carnival. We look forward to celebrating Christmas in the last week with our Secret Santa and you are welcome to start sending in gifts to the value of $10. Gifts are due no later than the 28th of November.
Our excursion to the movies (2nd Dec) is now active on Sentral so please fill out the permission note as soon as possible.
Please continue to send in gifts and donations for the St Vincent’s Christmas Hamper if you haven’t already.
A reminder that the Christmas Concert is on Wednesday, 4th December. Year 4 students are requested to wear a purple/blue shirt for the concert. Students can wear this t-shirt to school. School shorts, socks and shoes are to be worn to school as usual. If possible, students in Years 3-6 are to bring a cowboy or cowgirl hat for an "Aussie" country themed finale.
Don’t forget the End of Year Mass will be held in the school hall at 12 pm on the last Friday. Children may wish to go home after the Mass.
Finally, thank you all for your ongoing amazing support throughout the year! We wish you all a safe and holy Christmas.
Suzanne, Aleisha, Jessica and Danielle
Year 5
Well, it is Week 8 and we are almost at the end of 2025, and what a year it has been! The children have been able to list many highlights and are certainly looking forward to stepping up to be the leaders of the school in 2025.
Leadership Shirts: Information was sent out for 2025 Senior shirts via the Parent Portal. Please allow for growth over the course of the year. The information in the Portal must be completed by Monday 2nd December, to get orders finalised and sent off by end of term. Shirts will be $36 and this will be added to your school fees. This shirt takes the place of the school sports shirt for Year 6 students.
Leadership Speeches:
If your child has indicated their intention to run for School Captain, they will have the opportunity to say their speech for this leadership role next Tuesday the 26th from 8:45am in the School Hall. Students will complete their speeches in alphabetical order, starting with the girls. Once the students nominated for School Captain have finished, students will then separate to relocate for their Sports Captain speeches. Once all speeches have finished, all students from Years 4-6 will return to class to complete their voting.
Final Assembly 28th November at 12pm:
On Thursday 28th November, we will have our final Assembly for the year beginning at 12 pm. At this assembly, we will say farewell to our Year 6 students and Academic awards will be presented. Selecting recipients has been a difficult process, as there are many deserving students. We are, however, limited to the number of awards we can allocate. As mentioned above, each student should not forget the significance of striving to be a Lourdes Learner, and there is another opportunity in 2025.
St Vincent De Paul Donations:
Thank you to those families that have donated something for our Christmas hamper; each class has their own basket which will be donated to St Vincent De Pauls to spread Christmas joy to those less fortunate. Your generosity is overwhelming, so thank you.
Date Reminders:
- Week 9 – Tuesday 26 November: Leadership Speeches
- Week 9 - Thursday 28th November: Final Assembly and Awards 12 noon
- Week 9 – Friday 29 November: Year 5 Bowling Trip
- Week 10 – Wednesday 4 December: Christmas Concert 11:30 am
- Week 10 - Thursday 5 December Swimming Carnival

God Bless,
Jess, Garry, Sandra and Lisa

(Students will practise for their final Mass in the afternoon so are therefore asked to remain at school after the assembly.) STEM
Year 3 & 4
Design Technologies
In Term Four, students designed their own racing car using craft and recycled materials and followed steps to build an elastic banded car, balloon-powered car, and a wind craft. They collected data on how fast the cars moved and measured the distance the cars travelled, allowing them to reflect on the efficiency of the designs.
Year 5
Design Technologies
In Term Four, students created an animal which had various adaptations that assisted it with its survival in their chosen environment. Students selected suitable materials and tools to create, evaluate and present their animal.
Year 6
Design Technologies
In Term Four students selected suitable materials and tools to design and build a mini ecosystem to grow vegetables, grass, and garden mix. Students then collected observations, allowing them to reflect on their design to determine the most ideal growing conditions for their seeds.

Visual Arts
Hard to believe that the end of the year is coming up so quickly. I would like to commend all the students on their enthusiasm and passion for the Arts this year. Over the remaining couple of weeks, students will work on completing their Christmas artworks.
Italian
Well done to all the students completing their oral. The students were placed in an interview situation and answered questions about how they're feeling, body and family.
This week we will speak about Christmas in Italy, specifically “La Befana” the kindly old lady who delivers treats to children on the 6th of January The Epiphany of Jesus Christ.
Next week the students will be invited to a tasting experience of a variety of Italian foods. They will rate foods and write in Italian about the foods they liked and those that they did not. Remember if you have any questions about this tasting experience, please do not hesitate to contact me.

The Carnival is for children in Grades 3-6 ONLY.
All students in Grade 3 who are born in 2016 will be eligible to swim, however, as they are not of appropriate age, they will not be eligible for age championship points. As with Cross Country and Track & Field, there will not be an age championship for these students, nor will records be kept. They will simply be participating in this carnival to provide them with a valuable experience and to gain participation house points.
POINTS ALLOCATION & AGE CHAMPIONSHIPS
25m Events
1 point will be awarded to respective houses for each 25m swim completed. Results from 25m events will not contribute to Age Championship points.
50m, 100m and Individual Medley Events
The following points will be awarded to respective houses and individual age championship tallies following all 50m, 100m and Individual Medley Events:
1st Place – 10 Points (Blue Ribbon), 2nd Place – 6 points (Red Ribbon), 3rd Place – 4 Points (Green Ribbon), 4th Place – 2 Points (Yellow Ribbon) and 5th – 10th Place – 2 Points
Where there is more than one heat, points and ribbons will be awarded to the fastest swimmers overall. Students who are hoping to be considered for their respective age championship should swim as many 50/100m events as possible.
PLEASE ONLY NOMINATE YOUR CHILD FOR EVENTS THAT THEY CAN COMPETENTLY AND CONFIDENTLY COMPETE IN.
HOW TO NOMINATE
You will receive a Sentral App Permission request. This request will require you to select which events your child would like to swim in.
Nomination Guidelines – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
- Students can choose between the 25M OR 50M Event in each stroke.
- Students can choose to ADD 100m events, regardless of whether they have chosen the 25m or 50m event in each stroke.
- It is expected that all children in Grades 3-6 nominate themselves for at least one event.
- If you have not received the request, please contact Carla in the front office to check/update your details.
- All nominations need to be in by Sunday 24th November 2024.
- A nomination confirmation note will be sent home once all nominations are in. Please make sure you check your child’s nominations carefully; no changes will be made on the day.
- Please refer to the examples below:
Example 1: Jane is 12 years old and is a strong swimmer who would like to contest the age championship. To achieve this, she needs to nominate for as many 50m and 100m events as possible. She is still working on her Butterfly and isn’t yet confident nominating for 50m. Jane has chosen the following events:
- 25m Butterfly; 50m backstroke; 50m breaststroke; 50m Freestyle; 100m backstroke; 100m breaststroke; 100m Freestyle; 100M Individual Medley.

The festive season has arrived in the Lourdes Library! We would like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU for all your support in 2024. It has been a wonderful year with an amazing author visit, a massive Book Week celebration, a fantastic NSS event, a huge Book Fair, heaps of lunch time activities and most importantly, many books read. You are truly the most wonderful community to support as readers. Over the holiday break we encourage you to continue to read with your family.
Thank you to all our wonderful Library Elves who are always willing to help out and support us in the library.
Special mention and gratitude to Liliana Schwerin and Josephine Grubb who are always willing to lend a hand and have volunteered countless hours and ideas to keep the library bubbling along over their time here at Lourdes. We appreciate your support and wish you all the very best as you embark on the next chapter of your learning.
Holiday Reading Ideas…
- Create a Reading Routine: Establish a daily reading time, such as after lunch or before bedtime each day, and read a book together or have the children read books they received as gifts throughout the year.
- Offer a Variety of Reading Materials: Mix it up with fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, and magazines.
- Visit your local Library: Libraries often have holiday programs, storytelling sessions, and book clubs.
- Wrap up your Christmas books: open and read one book each night before bed as you count down to Christmas.
- Read before screen: Set a family challenge to read a book, play outside, make or create something, and do some imaginative play before screen time this holiday break.
