Dear Families,
Last Tuesday we had our school athletics carnival. At the age champion presentations on Thursday, I spoke to the whole school about genuinely living the Lourdes way whilst competing in a carnival. What we saw at this carnival were students who showed persistence, whether they were stiving for their best or trying their hardest at an event they found difficult. We witnessed teamwork as children worked in their early years groups to complete in relays. We also saw tremendous house spirit! And finally, so many students strived for sporting excellence; running faster, jumping higher and throwing further! Well done to all involved with this great carnival. Thank you also to the families and grandparents who came along to support the day. I have no doubt your children appreciated this.
It is just over two weeks until we break for the school holidays. As the mornings become colder and children can become fatigued, I thank you for continuing to ensure your child is dressed in their correct uniform each day and arrives to school on time. It is these moments of the term where we teach our children resilience and the strength to keep going. I would ask that parents ensure their children are wearing the correct sports shoes. The Parent Handbook outlines the expectations that students should only be wearing black or white track shoes. It is important we maintain the expectations for all students. Thank you for addressing this if need be.
As we head into the end of term, this is a friendly reminder to check you are up to date with your school fee invoices or on track with your regular payments. Please contact the office if you would like to discuss your fees or set up a regular plan. Thank you so much to the families who are keeping their fee payments regular and honouring their financial commitment to the school.
Take care,
Bridget

Student Report Cards
At the end of this term, parents will receive a Semester One Academic Report. Student reports will be published on the parent portal in Week 10 of this term. By the end of this semester, teachers will have gathered evidence of learning to provide a formal report on where students are at compared to the end of year level achievement standard. An effort grade will also be provided.
In addition, you will also see an English, Mathematics and a General comment. These will reflect how your child is learning and participating in school and the different ways they are striving to be a Lourdes Learner who demonstrates the traits of a learner and global citizen.
An example of the 'C' definition is below. This grade is the expected standard by the end of the year.
Evidence of the student's work typically demonstrates that the student has the targeted knowledge and the:
- expected conceptual understanding
- expected application of skills
- they are able to transfer the above to familiar situations
For further clarification, the following list provides definitions of other key terms you will read in your child’s report card:
- Evidence- a range of information that teachers collect including data, work samples, digital media, teacher notes, formal assessment tasks.
- Typically- allows for those students who may not have displayed this during a particular assessment task, but it is evident in their work with the frequency required within this grade. There are a range of opportunities provided to demonstrate student learning to obtain the reported grade and is not limited to one test or one assignment.
- Conceptual Understanding- a connected web of knowledge, rich in relationships and understanding and must be learned by thoughtful, mental activity
- Sophistication- employing advanced or refined concepts
- Skills- these are often what students need to be able to do, for example, creating texts, asking questions, re-reading and editing, summarising, counting etc.
- Transfer- the ability of a student to take their current knowledge, skills and understandings and apply this into a familiar or new scenario and/or different context; the ability to think about their thinking (metacognition) and reflect on their learning and understanding.
As always, if you would like more information or further clarification, please email me or your child’s teacher.

Faith & Religious Education News
Welcome to the APRE news for the fortnight. We hope Mrs Moore is enjoying her time travelling around England, Scotland and Wales. We can’t wait to hear of her adventures. Please enjoy the couple of travelling photos she sent through. They have been included in the photo stream.
Over the past two weeks I have enjoyed learning and experiencing the APRE role. I feel very lucky to be supported and encouraged by such great colleagues, wonderful students and families. At times I am certainly in the ‘Learning Pit’ but am being challenged and slowly climbing my way out.
Confirmation and First Communion
Congratulations to the members of our school community who received the sacrament of Confirmation and First Holy Communion. It was a special occasion for all candidates and families involved. The candidates are to be congratulated on their reverence and prayerfulness.

Prep
June has arrived, and we are halfway through our Prep year! The learning and emotional development at this age are quite amazing. It is a real privilege to play a role in this growth.
English – We continue to revise our letter sounds (s, a, t, i, p, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, e, u, r, b) and sight words (blue, orange, and yellow) for automaticity. We are continuing to build our segmenting and blending skills, working toward becoming more fluent readers. We are also transferring these skills to our writing, becoming more confident and independent writers.
Mathematics – We are covering patterning, where we identify the repeating element of a pattern, and copy, continue and create new patterns. The children enjoy exploring this concept using concrete materials.
Religion – We are exploring different types of prayers and will create our own prayer to acknowledge the things that we are thankful for.
Science – We have been investigating materials and why objects are made of certain materials. For our assessment, we will be constructing an animal enclosure/ chicken coop.
Athletics Carnival – Congratulations to all the children for their participation, excitement, and enthusiasm in the running races and relay. A special acknowledgement for the 5-year-old age champions, Chase Petrie and Eleanor Villanueva – well done!
Ball Games - We move straight into practising our ball games in readiness for the Ball Games Carnival, taking place on Wednesday, 19 June (Week 10).
Gymnastics – We are headed to All Stars Gymnastics on Thursday, 20 June (Week 10). This visit was a highlight of Term 1, and we expect the children to thoroughly enjoy this next visit.
Report Cards – Teachers are in the process of writing report cards, ready to be issued at the end of Week 10. Please be mindful that a ‘C’ grade means your child is achieving at standard according to the curriculum. Please contact your teachers if you have any queries or concerns.
Free Dress Day – Thursday, 13 June (Week 9) is a free dress day. Students are encouraged to wear the colours of their favourite sports team. Please bring a gold coin donation for St. Vincent de Paul.
Stay warm as we enter the season of Winter.
Amy, Becky and Michelle
Year 1
Welcome to Week 8!
A big congratulations to our Year 1s on their participation and enthusiasm at the Athletics Carnival last Tuesday. It was great to see everyone trying their best and cheering on their teammates. That chicken run relay sure is fun!
In English, we are learning about poetry; the purpose, the emotions poetry invokes in the reader and the elements of poetry. We are having fun writing some silly sounding sentences using alliteration! Alliteration is when the same sound is repeatedly used to begin words in a line of poetry or in a sentence.
In Mathematics, we are revising our learnings from the term; skip counting patterns, using our understanding of skip counting to efficiently count collections, repeating patterns, and place value of 2-digit numbers.
We are busy mapping our school as part of our HASS assessment, and it has been interesting for students to see photographs of what our school looked like before the building project began! We used Google Maps to see the boundaries of our school and were shocked to see a great big empty space where the school office should have been and that there were handball courts and a bike rack where our eating area now is.
Teachers are currently in the process of writing report cards, ready for them to be sent out to families in Week 10. Teachers gather evidence of learning in a variety of ways: exit tickets, observations, investigations, daily writes, reading data, Seesaw, class conversations and discussions of thinking. Using all these methods, a grade is assigned to students in each learning area. Please remember that if your child receives a ‘C’ grade that means that they have demonstrated an understanding of the knowledge and skills required for their work. For a child to receive a ‘B’ or an ‘A’ it means that, not only does the student understand the work, but they are also able to take that understanding and apply it to unfamiliar situations using critical thinking skills. A ‘D’ grade means that a student is developing their understanding and beginning to transfer their learning, and that they may require support to do so. Receiving a ‘D’ grade is not a failure; it means a student requires more time to consolidate their learning. During Semester 2, our students do exactly that! They further develop their metacognitive skills, their ability to reason and make connections, as well as discovering a greater sense of maturity within themselves. If your child will be receiving a ‘D’ grade on their report card, their teacher will be in touch to organise an opportunity to meet to discuss your child’s learning further.
Next Thursday, 13th June, is a free dress day – students are encouraged to wear the colours of their favourite sports team and bring a gold coin donation for St Vincent de Paul.
Week 10 is a busy one with our first Fire Safety Education session happening on Tuesday 18th, the annual Lourdes Ball Games Carnival on Wednesday 19th, our second All Star Gymnastics session on Thursday 20th and the Year 4 NAIDOC Assembly taking place on Friday 21st June, the last day of term.
Have a great week!
Laura, Jenny and Dennielle
Year 2
Welcome to Week 8! Congratulations to all students on the wonderful spirit and participation at the Athletics Carnival last Tuesday. It was great to see everybody getting in and enjoying themselves while trying their best.
This week, we are continuing to explore our connections to various places in HASS, recognising and describing attributes of 2D shapes in Maths, and in English, we are exploring descriptive language, characters, settings, and images through ‘Where the Forest Meets the Sea’, a beautiful imagery story by Jennie Baker.
Next Thursday 13th June (Week 9) is a free dress day – students are encouraged to wear the colours of their favourite sports team and bring a gold coin donation for St Vincent de Paul. Please remind your child to be sun-smart and socks and joggers are the preferred footwear.
Last week, we welcomed Golibe Maduka into our Year 2 cohort. Golibe joins students in 2B.
Thanks for reading!

Year 3
Welcome to Week 8! It has been a very busy time in the Year 3 area of the school with students working hard on their many assessments.
With Winter upon us, we would like to send a reminder to please ensure your child comes to school with a jumper or a jacket (with their name clearly displayed). We have noticed quite a few without and would love to avoid them being uncomfortable or getting sick.
In HASS, students have been researching their chosen neighbouring country to find additional information on natural, managed, and constructed features that are similar and different to Australia. They have learnt the importance of using different sources including Britannica, non-fiction books, and more. After researching, they have been tasked with the job of creating a poster explaining the features of their chosen country. It is wonderful to see so many colourful and creative posters starting to fill our classroom spaces.
In English, we have started our Poetry unit. Students are beginning to explore the poetic devices of alliteration, rhythm, and onomatopoeia. These devices make people think and feel different ways when listening to poems.
In Science, students have enjoyed learning about different materials that are insulators and conductors. We have been revising key vocabulary and topics in preparation for their upcoming science assessment.
In Religion, we are continuing to learn about the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist). Students have been learning about the fruits of the Spirit and how these can help us as we navigate our lives.
A huge congratulations to the Year 3 students for their effort and sportsmanship at the Athletics Carnival. It was wonderful to see all the students cheering on their peers during the events. See attached photos.
Upcoming events:
- Thursday 6th June, 2pm – 3F Assembly Presentation
- Thursday 13th June – Sports Team Dress Up Day – Catholic Mission Gold Coin donation - St Vincent de Paul
- Wednesday 19th June – Ball Games Carnival
- Friday 21st June – NAIDOC Assembly @ 12pm – Final Day of Term
Thanks for reading!

Year 4
Welcome to Week 8! How quick is this term flying by?
We are entering into a busy time period with all classes finalizing their teaching and assessment in preparation for report cards which will be sent out in Week 10. While we understand that there are many illnesses around, we would encourage all healthy students to be at school as much as possible, to complete the necessary work.
Over the last few weeks, Year 4 students have been busy writing their convict monologues in their English lessons. Last week, most students presented these monologues to their peers – focusing on being in character. Given the wonderful evidence of rehearsals, I’m sure many families are glad they don’t need to hear these speeches again.
We all had a fabulous time at the Athletics Carnival last week and the students demonstrated fantastic Lourdes Spirt by cheering on their friends and giving their best effort. Well done!
This Friday students have the privilege of having a visit from Wildcall Wildlife. There will be live animals as part of the show and students will be taught about the diets, habitats, behaviours of each animal. This incursion links in with our ‘Ecosystems and Food Chains’ Science Unit. Many thanks to Mrs Verdon for organizing this valuable experience.
On Thursday of Week 9, there is a Free Dress Day, where students are encouraged to wear their favourite ‘sports team’ colours while bringing in a gold coin donation. This is always a brightly coloured day with many team allegiances on show.
Ball Games Carnival will be held in Week 10 to round off a very competitive sporting term. This will be held on Wednesday 19th June.
Finally, a reminder that all of Year 4 will be presenting the NAIDOC Assembly on the last Friday of the term. All classes have been eagerly practicing the songs and are sounding very impressive. Assembly will be held at 12pm on that Friday and students are permitted to go home after the assembly, with their parents.
Enjoy the end of the Term!
Suzanne, Aleisha, Jessica and Danielle
Year 5
Key Dates
- YEAR 5 FULL FORMAL UNIFORM - Thursday 13th June- St Ursula’s “High School Musical” @ Empire Theatre
- YEAR 5 ONLY - Friday 14th June - Favourite Sports Team - Free Dress, St Vincent de Paul
- Wednesday 19th June – Ball Games Carnival
- Friday 21st June – NAIDOC Assembly @ 12:00 noon – Final Day of term
Firstly, a big congratulations to all those students who participated in the Athletics Carnival last week. We were blessed with a sensational day of fun and sunshine and the students made the most of it. Every person I have spoken to has commented on the impeccable behaviour and wonderful sportsmanship demonstrated by the students. This makes us so proud! Well done, Year 5 students!
It’s getting to that crunch time in the term with lots of assessment happening each week. We know that sickness can’t be helped, but if we can minimise absences over the next few weeks, it would be greatly appreciated, as catching students up is difficult.
In English, we have been finalising our persuasive writing where we are applying our knowledge of the Lawyer Paragraph structure, sentence types, a range of text connectives and persuasive devices, and focus on vocabulary choices. In Maths, we will begin exploring percentages and solving problems that involve adding or subtracting fractions with the same or related denominator. A reminder that if your child is at home, they have access to their learning through Canvas and can contact teachers via email and Teams.
In Technology, Year 5 have been looking at cyber safety. Part of keeping our kids safe online is making them aware of the dangers they are vulnerable and exposed to when they use games and social media platforms. We will be using an interactive program designed by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation for 8-12 year olds. The program explores real-life situations and provides solutions for what the students can do if they are faced with these situations. If you have any questions, please get in touch with Lisa Garcha.
A reminder that homework is set and due every Tuesday. Students are able to complete their homework at school from 8am in the 5P classroom. Homework includes Maths Online set tasks and revision, Reading Eggspress and Spelling via Assignments on Teams.
Best wishes,
Jess, Garry, Sandra and Lisa
Year 6
Thank you: Many thanks to all Year Six students for your help last week during the Athletics Carnivals week. The early start for families to enable students to help set up was appreciated. Also, students helped with packing up, encouraging younger members of the school, and leading the way to demonstrate house spirit. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed! Congratulations to all who gave their best during the competition.
Hass Multicultural Celebration: On Wednesday 12th June, Week Nine, we will culminate our HaSS unit: Who were the people who came to Australia? and our English units – Boy Overboard and The Arrival with a multicultural celebration. Students will wear a costume, bring a dish to share and parents will be invited to attend our beginning liturgy. The day will begin with a liturgy at 8:45 in the 6M classroom. More details to come.
Assessment: All assessment tasks will be completed at the end of Week Eight. Thank you for supporting your child to meet their commitments and strengthen executive functioning skills. These tasks will be coming home for parent signatures before the end of term. Thank you for taking the time to go over these, sign and return to school and be part of our feedback process.
Italian Celebration: On Thursday the 13th of June students from years 5 and 6 will participate in a culminating activity for Italian. Students will have the opportunity to make fresh pasta using a variety of pasta machines. They will also make a personal serve of tiramisu. Students will need to bring a small named plastic container (roughly 12cm x8cm) with a lid for their tiramisu, they will be given a zip lock bag for a portion of pasta to be cooked at home. The tiramisu is a child friendly recipe, no alcohol or coffee used, gluten free biscuits can be substituted, however if your child is allergic to dairy they may have to bring it home for a family member. Please let me know if your child has any specific needs or if you have any concerns or questions about the day.
Change of Sports Uniform Day for Semester 2: PE will be held each Wednesday during Semester 2. Therefore, sports uniforms will need to be worn each Wednesday and Friday.
Multicultural Day
On Wednesday 12th June we will culminate our HaSS and English learning about migrant stories and their contributions to Australian society. We invite you to join us for a liturgy to begin our Multicultural Day. The theme is Celebrate Diversity: We Are All One. Our liturgy will begin at 8:45 am in the 6M classroom for approximately 20 minutes. After the liturgy, we invite you to view your child’s digital presentation: This is your Life – A Migrant’s Story until 9:30 am. We will then proceed with the rest of the day and ask the students to gather to listen to our guest speaker, Mrs. Loretta Simmons who will recall the story of her father, an Italian migrant. The day will also include traditional dancing and a soccer game with a Catholic Social Justice viewpoint linked to our text Boy Overboard.
To celebrate our learning, we invite students to come dressed in a costume or to use a simple prop to represent a migrant group that has made a significant contribution to Australian society. For example, an apron and pizza tray to represent an Italian migrant and their introduction of Italian food to our Australian way of life , a suitcase, and a 10-pound ticket to represent a Ten Pound Pom.
As well, we invite students to contribute to a Multicultural Feast by bringing a small plate of food to share with our Year Six group that represents our multicultural society and the influence migrants have had on our development. e.g. spring rolls, pizza, croissants, meatballs.
Some reminders about food:
- We aim to share our “long lunch” at 12:15 pm. If your dish is hot and it is convenient to drop to school at the time, that would be most appreciated.
- Other food can be brought to school in the morning, and we can store in our fridges. There is an oven we can use to heat anything up, if necessary.
- Please avoid food that contains nuts and peanuts.
- If your dish is gluten free or dairy free, please label to help with dietary needs.
Students will make flags to decorate our classroom. There is no need for their dish to represent the flag they have created or the costume/prop they choose to wear.
Please do not hesitate to clarify any questions.
Kylie, Shauna, and Steve
Visual Arts
We were recently invited to participate in a school art competition sponsored by three incredible local organisations: The Darling Downs Zoo, FX Technologies, and The Toowoomba Art Society. All art classes have finished a piece for this competition. The theme of the art is “Wilderness Wonders”, and first prize is a class trip to the Darling Downs Zoo. Due to the large quantity of entries, I have had to narrow it down to selected entries per class. Please see the list below of students who have had pieces entered. We thank these students for their hard work and wish them luck. These students will be presented with a certificate at tomorrows assembly.
