Lourdes is an amazing school. One of the many privileges of experiencing the Principal position is the number of positive affirmations I receive from staff and parents, in particular, from visiting relief teachers and new parents. Positive praise from visiting teachers such as… Lourdes has a lovely vibe; everyone is so welcoming; the kids are awesome and so well-behaved; you all do a great job; it is a special place… are just some of the wonderful comments I have received lately.
In addition, parents, especially after our community and school events, will often send positive affirmations about our school. One such email this week listed the many phrases they heard from our Year 5 & 6 boys at the Track & Field carnival. Parents heard the boys use phrases such as:
'Great job',
'Never mind, you have another go',
'Aw, bad luck',
'You nearly had it',
'Yes, you did it!'
'Man, that was amazing'
This same email said that after five children at different schools, OLOL has been the most welcoming and nurturing environment they have ever experienced. Combined with many parents talking to me about the tremendous display of sportsmanship and fabulous atmosphere at each carnival, these comments make me very proud of our school.
A big thank you to Mrs Wigan and all our wonderful staff members who make these carnivals a great success!
Staff Changes
Next term we welcome Mr Steve Shoebridge back to Our Lady of Lourdes. He will take Year 6 for the second semester while Tim continues in the Acting Assistant Principal role. Mr Birch goes on leave in Term 3 so Mrs Goldthorpe will take 3GB on a Friday for four weeks in August.
Mrs Toni Gilmore is sadly leaving us. We wish Mrs Gilmore all the very best for the future. Mrs Sarah Kelly is also sadly leaving us at the end of the term and we wish her all the very best with her future endeavours. We thank both these ladies for their tremendous service to our school and support of our students over many years. The recruitment process to replace both staff members has begun.
We thank our parent community for your continued support throughout this period of change.
Celebrating our School Officers
Next week, we will be celebrating School Officer Day, a time to recognise and express our gratitude for the hard work and dedication of our amazing support staff. Our School Officers deserve to have their contributions acknowledged, including our library aide, teacher aides, grounds staff, ICT specialist and administrative staff. As dedicated professionals, they all provide amazing support to our school. On behalf of the parents, teachers and the leadership team, our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to every one of our School Officers.
Triple M Wednesday Weather Report reading by Abigail Redinger.
Congratulations to one of our Year 6 students – Abigail Redinger. She read the weather on the Radio Triple M this morning. Abigail did a beautiful job representing Our Lady of Lourdes and has now put our school into the running for $1000 to be spent at Harvey Norman.

Student Report Cards
At the end of this term, parents will receive a Semester One Academic Report. Student Reports will be published on the parent portal in Week 10 of this term. By the end of this semester, teachers will have gathered evidence of learning to provide a formal report on where students are at compared to the end of year level achievement standard. An effort grade will also be provided.
In addition, you will also see an English, Mathematics and a General comment. These will reflect how your child is learning and participating in school and the different ways they are striving to be a Lourdes Learner who demonstrates the traits of a learner and global citizen.
An example of the 'C' definition is below. This grade is the expected standard by the end of the year.
Evidence of the student's work typically demonstrates that the student has the targeted knowledge and
- expected conceptual understanding
- expected application of skills
- they are able to transfer the above to familiar situations
For further clarification, the following list provides definitions of other key terms you will read in your child’s report card:
Evidence- a range of information that teachers collect including data, work samples, digital media, teacher notes, formal assessment tasks.
Typically- allows for those students who may not have displayed this during a particular assessment task, but it is evident in their work with the frequency required within this grade. There are a range of opportunities provided to demonstrate student learning to obtain the reported grade and is not limited to one test or one assignment.
Conceptual Understanding- a connected web of knowledge, rich in relationships and understanding and must be learned by thoughtful, mental activity
Sophistication- employing advanced or refined concepts
Skills- these are often what students need to be able to do, for example, creating texts, asking questions, re-reading and editing, summarising, counting etc.
Transfer- the ability of a student to take their current knowledge, skills and understandings and apply this into a familiar or new scenario and/or different context; the ability to think about their thinking (metacognition) and reflect on their learning and understanding.
As always, if you would like more information or further clarification, please email me or your child’s teacher.

Prep
June has arrived! Halfway through our Prep year!
The emotional development and learning at this age are quite amazing and a real privilege to play a role in that growth.
Empire Theatre excursion is on Friday. All families received an email explaining the excursion and the cost – please respond to this email. We will read the story each day this week, so the children understand the plot before they see the stage production. We will also revise bus and theatre behaviour – children must be dressed in their winter uniform and be on their best behaviour.
Our Athletics Carnival was lots of fun – we have enjoyed practising our running and relays. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to Mrs Wann and Mrs Wigan for all their efforts. We move straight into practising our ball games in readiness for the carnival in Week 10.
In our Science unit we have been investigating materials and why objects are made of certain materials. Our assessment piece is to design a chicken cage and to be able to explain what to use and why to use it. Let’s hope our chickens are happy!
We continue to encourage using our voice to explain how we are feeling, what we understand and any confusion we have – please discuss this at home.
Stay warm as we enter the season of Winter.
Cheers,
Melita, Liz and Loretta
Year 1
Welcome to Week 8!
A big congratulations to our Year 1s on their participation and enthusiasm at the Athletics Carnival last Friday. It was great to see everyone trying their best and cheering on their teammates.
This Friday, we will be attending a performance of ‘Are We There Yet?’ at the Empire Theatre with the Preps and Year 2 classes. Students are to wear their formal winter uniform on Friday, please. We are looking forward to seeing this story come to life on stage!
Please keep reminding your child to practise their selected poem for Drama. Copies of these poems were sent home earlier in the term for students, however if you need another copy please get in touch with us! Mrs Holzheimer has said that our presentations will take place in Term 3, as we will continue with Drama next semester. Please get in touch with Amanda if you have any questions. Amanda.Holzheimer@twb.catholic.edu.au
In English, we are also learning about poetry; the purpose, the emotions poetry invokes in the reader and the elements of poetry.
In Mathematics, we are revising our learnings from the term; skip counting patterns, using our understanding of skip counting to efficiently count collections, repeating patterns, and place value of 2-digit numbers.
Next Thursday, 15th June, is a free dress day – students are encouraged to wear the colours of their favourite sports team and bring a gold coin donation for St Vincent de Paul.
Teachers are currently in the process of writing report cards, ready for them to be sent out to families in Week 10. Teachers gather evidence of learning in a variety of ways: exit tickets, observations, investigations, daily writes, reading data, Seesaw, class conversations and discussions of thinking. Using all these methods, a grade is assigned to students in each learning area. Please remember that if your child receives a ‘C’ grade that means that they are understanding the work in class and are at benchmark. For a child to receive a ‘B’ or an ‘A’ it means that not only does the student understand the work, but they are also able to take that understanding and apply it to unfamiliar situations using critical thinking skills. A ‘D’ grade means that a student is developing their understanding and beginning to transfer their learning, and that they may require support to do so.
Have a great week!
Dennielle, Laura and Jenny
Year 2
Welcome to Week 8! Congratulations to all students on the wonderful spirit and participation at the Athletics Carnival last Friday. It was great to see everybody getting in and enjoying themselves while trying their best.
This Friday, we will be attending a performance of ‘Are We There Yet?’ at the Empire Theatre. This should be a great show and fits in with our future HASS unit. Students are to wear their formal winter uniform on Friday.
This week, we are continuing to explore our connections to various places in HASS, recognising and describing attributes of 2D shapes in Maths and, in English, we are exploring descriptive language, characters, settings and images through ‘Where the Forest Meets the Sea’.
Tomorrow (8th June), 2B will be presenting the assembly prayer at 2pm in the hall – all welcome!
Next Thursday (15th June) is a free dress day – students are encouraged to wear the colours of their favourite sports team and bring a gold coin donation for St Vincent de Paul.
Have a great week.

Maths: We are coming to the end of learning about the different strategies to help solve multiplication and division problems. The students enjoyed learning about strategies including drawing a picture, arrays, repeated addition, and skip counting. Next, we will be exploring angles in our everyday environments. Students will be focusing on right angles (90 degrees), but also learning to identify acute (smaller than a right angle), obtuse (larger than a right angle), and straight (180 degrees) angles. You can help by playing a game of angles eye spy!
English: Students have been provided opportunities to independently write a number of procedures in the last couple of weeks. A very memorable activity was washing Mrs Goldthorpe’s beautiful puppy Rosie. After washing her, students wrote a procedure for the steps involved. See attached pictures of Rosie’s bath time. They are now working on their assessment procedure. For their assessment, students observed their teacher model how to make a crunchie ice cream and are writing a procedure to match the steps modelled. They will also be given the opportunity to write a procedure of their own next week. Students are encouraged to use action verbs (e.g. cut, glue, mix), adverbs (e.g. slowly, cautiously), and adverbial phrases that tell when, where, or how (e.g. after 5 minutes, with your ruler) in their writing. You can support your child by brainstorming things, they feel like an expert at, to write about. It could be cooking their favourite breakfast, playing a game, creating a craft activity, and so on.
HASS: Students have thoroughly enjoyed conducting research about an Australian neighbouring country of their choice and creating a poster to represent the information found. They have done a fantastic job comparing their country’s natural, managed, and constructed features to Australia.
Religion: In Religion, students are enjoying learning about the Sacrament of Baptism, its symbols, and its importance to the Catholic Church.
Science: Students have finished their Science assessment for the term, and will spend the next few weeks conducting experiments to consolidate their understanding of heat energy.
Have a great week everyone.
Sarah, Demi, Garry, Lisa, and Megan

Year 4
Year 4 students have been busy writing their convict monologues in their English lessons. They have worked hard to improve their oral language skills and will present their monologues to their peers this week.
In Design Technology lessons, students have begun creating their toy for a child convict. Students have gathered recyclable materials and created some very impressive toys! Thank you, parents, for your assistance with this task.
We all had a fabulous time at the Athletics Carnival last week and the students demonstrated fantastic Lourdes Spirt by cheering on their friends and giving their best effort. Well done!
Students enjoyed a visit from Wildcall Wildlife this week. Live animals were part of the show and students learnt about the diets, habitats, behaviours of each animal. This incursion linked in with our ‘Ecosystems and Food Chains’ Science Unit.
Year 4 students have been given a selection of poems which they have a choice to perform individually or with a partner in drama lessons. They have shown great enthusiasm so far and we are looking forward to seeing everyone transform into their character and tell their story. All students should be ready to perform this week. We will continue into Week 9 to get through everyone in the class. This will form part of their overall assessment for Drama this semester.
Please get in touch if you have any questions.

Have a wonderful week!

Year 5
Key Dates
- Thursday 15th June – Sports Team Dress Up Day – Catholic Mission Gold Coin donation - St Vincent de Paul
- Thursday 22nd June – Ball Games carnival
- Friday 23rd June – NAIDOC Assembly @ 12pm – Final Day of term
Firstly, a big congratulations to all those students who participated in the Athletics Carnival last week. We were blessed with a sensational day of fun and sunshine and the students made the most of it. Every person I have spoken to has commented on the impeccable behaviour and wonderful sportsmanship demonstrated by the students. This makes us so proud! Well done Year 5 students!
It’s getting to that crunch time in the term with lots of assessment happening each week. We know that sickness can’t be helped, but if we can minimise absences over the next few weeks, it would be greatly appreciated as catching students up is difficult.
In English we have been finalising our persuasive letters to Ms Murray where we are applying our knowledge of the Lawyer Paragraph structure, sentence types, a range of text connectives and persuasive devices, and focus on vocabulary choices. In Maths we finished exploring percentages and are finalising our new Impact cycle of Perimeter and Area this week. A reminder that if your child is at home, they have access to their learning through Canvas and can contact teachers via email and Teams.
A reminder that the first bell, to signal the start of school, is at 8.25am. We have a number of students arriving 10-15mins late each day – please organise to be at school on time. Every minute counts!
We hope everyone is staying warm in this horrid cold weather we are experiencing.
Best wishes,
Amy, Jess and Kirsten (and Emily in spirit)

Year 6
Thank you: Many thanks to all Year Six students for your help last week during the Athletics Carnivals week. The early start for families to enable students to help set up was appreciated. Also, students helped with packing up, encouraging younger members of the school, and leading the way to demonstrate house spirit. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed!
Hass Multicultural Celebration: On Wednesday 21st June, Week Ten, we will culminate our HaSS unit: Who were the people who came to Australia? and our English units – Boy Overboard and The Arrival with a multicultural celebration.
To celebrate our learning, we invite students to come dressed in a costume or to use a simple prop to represent a migrant group that has made a significant contribution to Australian society. For example, an apron and pizza tray to represent an Italian migrant and their introduction of Italian food to our Australian way of life or a suitcase and a 10- pound ticket to represent a Ten Pound Pom.
As well, we invite students to contribute to a Multicultural Feast by bringing a small plate of food to share with our Year Six group that represents our multicultural society and the influence migrants have had on our development. e.g. spring rolls, pizza, croissants, meatballs.
Some reminders about food:
- We aim to share our “long lunch” at 12:30 pm. If your dish is hot and it is convenient to drop to school at the time, that would be most appreciated.
- Other food can be brought to school in the morning, and we can store in our fridges. There is an oven we can use to heat anything up, if necessary.
- Please avoid food that contains nuts and peanuts.
- If your dish is gluten free or dairy free, please label to help with dietary needs.
- Students will make flags to decorate our classroom. There is no need for their dish to represent the flag they have created or the costume/prop they choose to wear.
The day will begin with a liturgy at 8:45 in the 6M classroom. Parents are most welcome to join us. This will go for approximately 20 minutes. After the liturgy, we invite you to view your child’s digital presentation: This is your Life – A Migrant’s Story until 9:30am. The day will also include a talk from the Dias and Alves de Souze families as guest speakers, dancing, and soccer – with a Catholic Social Justice viewpoint and linked to our text Boy Overboard.
Assessment: All assessment tasks will be completed at end of Week Eight. Thank you for supporting your child to meet their commitments and strengthen executive functioning skills. These tasks will be coming home for parent signatures before the end of term. Thank you for taking the time to go over these, sign and return to school and be part of our feedback process.
Check out the examples of our journal writing in our Arrival assessment in English:
Olivia: My daughter, who is bright and bubbly, held my hand as tight as a python while she longed for me to stay. Tipping my grey felt hat, she had a twinkle in her eye. The bird hiding underneath provided a sense of hope for all.
Tom: My new friends welcomed me with loving arms wrapped warmly like a blanket. While we danced and sung, a glowing light filled the room. I knew I was safe.
Kylie, Shauna, Garry and Helen

Visual Arts
The Preps have continued with exploring different drawing and painting techniques. Over the last few weeks they have had a go at paper weaving a rainbow fish, line drawing an emu and used oil pastels with water colours to create a brilliant butterfly.
Year 1
The Year 1’s have continued their study into warm and cool colours with the completion of the sun and moon painting. They have now begun work on a picture exploring emotions, inspired by the author and illustrator Todd Parr. His pictures are very colourful and cartoon like so lots of fun to replicate.
Year 2
The Year 2’s have completed their polar bear ice cream painting using white and black paint to create light and dark colours. They are currently working on a collage using paper they printed with paint to create visual texture.
Year 5
The Year 5’s have continued their work on printing. They have experimented with different printing techniques and evaluated what has worked well. Once their printing is complete they will begin work on an oil pastel shark encounter artwork.
Year 6
The Year 6’s have completed their Notan picture, using positive and negative spaces. This week they will work with watercolours to paint a bird.
Mrs Simmons

Italian
As the term gets close to the end the students are working on their assessment piece. Each child is creating a wanted poster for themselves. The poster will have a full description of themselves including physical and personality characteristics. Once this is completed we hope to have some fun cooking for the last couple of weeks.

Sorry Day & Reconciliation Week 2023
May 26th was National Sorry Day, a day that acknowledges the Stolen Generations. That's the name given to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were removed from their families and communities in the past. Reconciliation Week is a time for Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements. We have a selection of books in the Library, about this topic, ready to loan now.
World Environment Day (June 5) and World Ocean Day (June 8)
At Lourdes we encourage our learners to be Global Citizens. Being a Global Citizen includes being aware of what is happening in the world. Reading helps us to understand the world we live in without leaving Toowoomba. Read MORE about World Environment Day | United Nations and World Oceans Day | United Nations here.
Independent Readers
Teachers have been busily assessing students reading and we have some NEWLY Independent Readers. Congratulations to these fabulous Lourdes Learners.

Lateral Reading
Lateral Reading is all about reading deeply on a topic and not relying on one source to form an idea opinion. Lateral readers are able to view a wide range of sources on a topic. They can select appropriate print and digital texts. They are able to review websites for accuracy and weed out ‘fake’ sites or the ‘hate’ sites that exist online. We always encourage Lourdes Learners to use authoritative sites to commence their quests for information. This means going to AccessIt first to visit Britannica (which includes links to the Web’s Best Sites), Trove or even the State Library pages to gather quality information. Using websites that include .org, .gov or .edu is also encouraged as these sites are monitored, moderated and content creators are held accountable for the information they provide.
New Books
We have LOTS interesting, engaging and exciting NEW ARRIVALS. Drop by and check-them-out! ?
AccessIt – Access to all things Library and Research from anywhere, anytime.
AccessIt Don’t forget about our school Library Catalogue. Students can search for books, read Britannica, try Huey the Bookbot to select a new book to read, watch a clip on Click View and lots more! Students (or parents) can even check their current loans! Sign in to ensure FULL access (Click View, Britannica).
Chess
Just TWO weeks of Chess to go this term. We DO NOT meet for Chess in Week 10. We will run lessons again in Term 3, keep an eye out for permission forms as the end of term gets nearer. We do not offer Chess in Term 4 so be sure to sign up early if you missed out this term. If you have questions or issues with Chess please contact: Danielle.Leathart@twb.catholic.edu.au
Book Club
