Dear Parents and Carers
As we approach the end of another remarkable term, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on our accomplishments, share some important updates, and express my gratitude to everyone who contributes to making Our Lady of Lourdes such a wonderful place of learning and growth.
I am immensely proud of the hard work and dedication the students, teachers, and support staff have shown to continue with learning despite the challenges with the ongoing delays in the building project and having to pack and move mid-term. Staff and students alike have risen to the challenges and have continued to make our school thrive.
Thank you to all our families who supported our Twilight Art Exhibition and daytime student performances for ‘Loving the Arts at Lourdes’ last week. It was a fabulous week of celebrating the Arts. It was also an opportunity to celebrate and remind everyone of the importance of reading with the Book Week dress-up and the Readers’ Cup competition. A big thank you to the following people for their contribution in making ‘Loving the Arts at Lourdes’ a major success:
- All student performers! What talented and brave individuals performing in front of such a large audience
- Mrs Loretta Simmons, (Art and LOTE teacher), for her time with the students making incredible artwork, mounting all the art, and organising the balloon display donated by Air Affair Co
- Mrs Ebony Rosier (Music Teacher) and Mrs Amanda Holzheimer (Drama Teacher) for ensuring the smooth running of the performances and for teaching and practicing with the students
- Mrs Liz Wagner for organising the display boards and the catering and Mrs Melita Hohn for helping with catering on the night of the Art Exhibition
- Year 6 students who were amazing waiters on the night and the Year 6 teachers for organising them
- Mrs Aleisha Verdon for organising her husband and extraordinary artist, Des Verdon to paint Ross Haylock, our P&F President, on the night - this was so entertaining, and the end result was brilliant!
- Ebony Rosier and Mitch Humphrys for entertaining the crowd - amazing tunes and sensational singing
- Teacher Aides who put up all the artwork for display
- P&F for drinks and running the bar
- Artwork donated by Mandy McGuire – The Lilburne family. The sale of the artwork raised $200 for the school
- All Teachers for their flexibility in turning up to practices
- Janice Moore for running the PPT
- Tim Franzmann for being a popular MC
- Mrs Leathart for tying in Book Week to the Loving the Arts at Lourdes and for organising Readers' Cup and activities to inspire kids to read
Please let me know if I have missed anyone! Many hands certainly make light work and the effort from everyone is tremendous.
Fathers’ Day Mass
We hope all our fathers and father figures in our lives can make it to tomorrow’s Father’s Day Mass. Please join us for a sausage sizzle after Mass. Enjoy Fathers’ Day on Sunday. I hope you like the great gift this year from our school Fathers’ Day stall organized by our wonderful P&F. Thank you to Mandy Ryan, Corrine Baker, and Kristy Wyrzykowski for organizing it all and for our parent helpers who helped at each stall.
Building Project
Giabal Building has now been certified for staff and students to occupy it and all classes are now in their new spaces. Prep has also moved into the demountable classrooms in preparation for the upcoming refurbishment of the downstairs Quinlan building. This refurb will give us three even classrooms ready for three Prep classes next year.
The handball courts at the front of the school are almost ready! As soon as we have the front open to us, we will go back to our original times of an 8:30 – 3:00 pm school day for all students with two Stop Drop Go zones, one at the front on Ascot St and one behind the Church. Stay tuned next term for these changes.
After School Supervision
Please remember that the only places your child is to wait to be picked up after the end of day bell, is either at the Stop Drop and Go behind the Church or at Outside School Hours Care. These are the only supervised spots, and we wish all students to be safe.
Uniforms
Next week is the transition to wearing summer uniform. Due to Swimming Week for Prep-Year 3 in Week 9, these students can wear their sports uniform for the whole week. Please consult the uniform code which is available on the website for all necessary items. Your commitment to abiding by the uniform policy is greatly appreciated and certainly goes a long way in avoiding unnecessary issues. All parents sign an enrolment contract that clearly states your agreement to all school policies. The upcoming holidays should provide a great opportunity for parents to ensure all uniform items including full black shoes with formal uniform, and hats and other uniform items to be clearly named with your child’s full name, not just initials. This makes the returning of lost items an easier task.
Pupil Free Day
A reminder that this Friday 1st September is a pupil free day. The Teachers will be meeting with Mater Dei teachers for professional development and School Officers will meet together for focused learning catered to their expertise. The office will be open.
Enrolments
Planning for staffing levels for the 2024 school year has already commenced. To assist us with planning, it would be greatly appreciated if you could inform us as soon as possible if you are not intending to return to OLOL next year.
Long Service Leave
I am away on long service leave in Week 10 of this term and Weeks 1 and 2 of next term. Planned since last year, I will be travelling throughout Europe with my Mum and Aunty. Mrs. Janice Moore, APRE, will ably deputise in my absence and Mr. Tim Franzmann and Mrs. Emily McKay will assist in the office to support Janice.
As this is our last newsletter for the term, I wish everyone a wonderful end of term and a relaxing holiday. If I don't see you at an upcoming school event or Chris Golightly's farewell on Friday 8 September, see you again next term!

Faith & Religious Education News
In Week 6 I completed my 10 Year APRE Review – I thank all the staff, parents and children who contributed to the 360 survey and were interviewed by the review panel members. I was overwhelmed by the positive response from the Our Lady of Lourdes community.
Our “Loving the Arts at Lourdes” was a wonderful event – Congratulations to Mrs Simmons, Mrs Holzheimer, Mrs Rosier, the artists, performers and musicians for their presentations. We also thank the staff for their support during practices, the catering core – Mrs Wagner and Mrs Hohn, the many aides who helped with set up and pull down, the members of the P and F for the bar service and event set up, Mr Verdon our artist in resident and Mr Haylock for being a great model, the balloon donation, Mr Franzmann for his jokes and the Year 6 waiters and of course our ever appreciative audience - list goes on – again an example of the OLOL Community Team working together.
Tomorrow, we celebrate our annual Father’s Day Mass. We thank all the Dads, Granddads, Pops and Pas who are able to come along to celebrate with us. We hope everyone enjoys our Sausage Sizzle morning tea. We thank the many cooks and helpers who are coming along to help us with this celebration! Cooking starts at 8:30 am - Mass at 10 am. We look forward to a wonderful community event!
Our next gathering for the Sacrament of 1st Reconciliation is on Tuesday 5th September at 7:00pm. A plan for the seating in the church will be emailed from the parish. The children will have a practise of the ceremony during school time on Monday and will be able to guide their chosen guests to their seats. We will have short final meeting at 3:30pm in the church on Monday 4th September to check seating, certificates, and final questions. Candidates and their chosen guests are asked to be at the church on Tuesday 5th September by 6:40pm. The children need to know their “Act of Contrition/Sorry” prayer. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the OLOL Parish (07 4634 1453 Monday – Friday 9.00am – 1.00pm) or email olol.parish@bigpond.com
We have our Crazy Socks Coloured Clothes Day on Thursday 14th September. Wear your craziest socks, with your sun safe coloured clothes, suitable footwear, brimmed hat and bring along a gold coin for the Catholic Mission. Also, remember to bring in a pair of new socks for our school donation to The Base Soup Kitchen. Socks can be sent in at any time. It is amazing the sense of dignity someone feels when they have a new pair of socks to wear. Please support both these initiatives to encourage our students to be thoughtful Global Citizens for our local and global communities.
There is no assembly on Thursday 31st August 2023 due to the Father’s Day Mass and Thursday 7th September2023 due to lower school swimming commitments.
N.B. There is a Pupil Free Day on Friday 1st September 2023 – Teachers will be gathering at Mater Dei school for Staff In-service
Our End of Term Assembly is at 12 noon on Friday 15th September 2023.
If you have any other RE queries or questions, please contact me on Janice.Moore@twb.catholic.edu.au or contact the school office.
Have a wonderful week.

Lots of learning, assessment, arts festival, music performance, book week, dress up day, readers cup – whew! Well done everyone for all your efforts.
Our adventure continues this week with moving into our temporary classrooms – our routine will be the same, just in a different classroom. Please let us know if your child has any worries about the change.
Father’s Day celebrations this week – stall run by the P&F on Wednesday and Mass in the hall on Thursday at 10am. Please check your class newsletter for individual class celebrations.
Week 8 is swimming week – very exciting! We swim every day! Children need to bring togs, towel, thongs and jumper to school each day. Glennie provide the swimming caps.
Please remember to sign up for a parent interview – we look forward to catching up with you to discuss your child’s progress.
Have a fantastic September holiday – please let us know if you are leaving early so we can adjust the roll.
Cheers,

Year 1
What an amazing week we had last week - settling into our new classrooms, performing on stage for the Loving the Arts at Lourdes concert and dressing as our favourite characters for book week! It was great to see all the beautiful artworks by our budding young artists on display in the hall too.
This week, to culminate our learning in Science, we have been busy creating suitable habitats for our classroom pets. The students are also creating their own dioramas to represent a habitat for an animal of their choice.
In Maths, we have been revising addition and subtraction strategies with a focus on friendly numbers. In English, we are working on completing our Possum information report drafts in preparation to publish our work using Book Creator.
Students have been busy building a small gift for Fathers’ Day. They also have the opportunity to purchase a gift from the P & F stall on Wednesday. We are looking forward to seeing all our Dads, Grandfathers and father figures at the Fathers’ Day Mass on Thursday at 10.00am.
Please book a parent-teacher interview through the parent portal if you have not yet done so. This is a valuable opportunity to check-in on your child’s progress.
Next week is swimming week for Pre-Year 3 students. Please have togs, towel, goggles and thongs ready to go and ensure your child is able to get changed independently.
In Week 10, we will celebrate the Early Years on Wednesday 13th September. There will be a Liturgy at 10am that everyone is welcome to attend. The children in Prep to Year 2 will then participate in some Early Years activities followed by a sausage sizzle for lunch. If there are any parents available to help run the activities between 11.00 – 1.00 please let us know.
1B will also be leading Prayer in the Week 10 Assembly on Friday 15th September and all are welcome to attend.

Year 2
What a great week we had last week, with Loving the Arts at Lourdes and Book Week! Well done to all students on their fantastic performances and their participation and enthusiasm for the Book Week activities. A big thank you to all of the staff involved in organising the events.
This week, we continue to compare the mass of objects in Maths and are working on building our comprehension skills in English. In Science, we are exploring how materials can change and are looking at various forms of prayer in Religion.
Next week, we will have swimming lessons each day – please refer to the information that has been sent home and please ensure all items brought in are clearly named.
We have a few things happening in Week 10 – on Wednesday 13th, we celebrate the Early Years with the Prep and Year 1 classes, the ‘Crazy Sock’ free dress day is on Thursday 14th and the end-of-term assembly will be held at 12 noon on Friday 15th.
We look forward to seeing you at the Father’s Day Mass tomorrow and wish all fathers and grandfathers a very happy day on Sunday. Don’t forget that this Friday, 1st September, is a pupil-free day.
Have a great week!

- Parent Teacher Interviews: If you haven’t already booked in for a Parent Teacher Interview time slot, please do so via the Sentral app.
- 3L and 3G Change of Library Day: both 3L and 3G have had a change of library day from Wednesdays to Mondays. As always, if your child forgets their library books, they are most welcome to bring them another day to return and borrow.
- Swimming: Year 3 students will be participating in Swimming Lessons next week. They will need to bring a swimming bag with their togs, thongs, goggles, and a towel from Monday – Friday. Students are to wear their sports uniform each day next week and will get changed into their swimmers at school. Please note that students get extra hungry in swimming week, so please pack some extra nibblies in their lunchbox!
- Summer Uniform: In Week 10, our uniform changes back to summer uniform.
- End of Term Liturgy: There has been a change of date for our End of Term Liturgy. The new date and time of our End of Term Liturgy is Thursday 14th September from 1:40pm – 2:40pm. We apologise for any inconvenience this change has caused. Students will be performing their line dances at this Liturgy, and parents will be invited to join in the line dancing fun after their performance. Students are invited to wear their country dress up to school, please no cowboy hats or heeled boots. Please note, this day is also Crazy Sock Day. Students are welcome to wear their crazy socks with their Country costume, or are welcome to bring their country costume to change into at lunch time.
- Crazy Sock Day: On Thursday 14thSeptember, students will be invited to wear crazy socks to school (and free dress). Please bring in a new pair of socks to donate to The Base Soup Kitchen and a gold coin donation for Catholic Missions on the day.
- Maths: This week, students have been learning to tell and show time to the minute on an analogue clock. Time is often a challenging concept for children due to the limited analogue clocks around us these days (they are more commonly digital!). You can support your child in their learning by encouraging them to wear an analogue wristwatch and reading the analogue clock throughout the day. You may also like to challenge them by asking what the time would be in 10 minutes, 30 minutes, etc.
- English: Students have been working on writing their informative assessment paragraph from the facts they have researched about a chosen animal. They are also working on turning their research into a PowerPoint, which they will present to the class next week (Week 9). This will be a fantastic opportunity to build their oral presentation skills, as well as share their hard work with their peers!
- Science: Students are continuing to learn about life cycles of different animals, and the different external features of animals.
- Religion: Students are learning about Jesus as the Messiah and the life and teachings of Jesus. Year 3 Retreat - Year 3 will be expriencing a prayer retreat on Monday, 11th September at Newtown Park. Please bring a towel to sit for the prayer.
Thanks for reading!

Year 4
Welcome to Week 8! Can you believe that we are less than three weeks till holidays?
Loving the Arts at Lourdes
Last week was an enormous week of different activities. We started the week rehearsing and preparing for our ‘Loving the Arts at Lourdes’. On Tuesday night, some of our amazingly talented Year 4 singers performed admirably for a large roll up of parents and friends. The hall looked amazing with all of our artwork adorning the walls. On Wednesday, we had the wonderful opportunity to watch all students in the school perform musically and/or dramatically. We have some very talented students in our midst. A huge congratulations to Summer, Lola, Sienna, Evelynne, Bethany, Sarah, Grace, Matthew and Oscar for their fabulous Poems in Pairs. Congratulations also to the Year 4 students who are part of the school choir – such beautiful, sweet singing. All of this would not have been possible without the fabulous work of Mrs Simmons, Mrs Holzheimer and Mrs Rosier. We thank them very much for their time and effort.
Book Week
Just when we thought the excitement for the week was over, our amazing teacher librarian, Mrs Leathart ramped it all up again with our Book Week celebrations. Our classes were filled with magical characters and sporting superstars as we dressed up for Book Week. Mrs Leathart’s Reader’s Cup, as always, was hotly contested and enjoyed by all. We thank Mrs Leathart for all the extra work that he did last week – the scavenger hunt and lunchtime activities sent a buzz around the school. We are grateful for the wonderful support of Mrs Monte as well.
Father’s Day Mass
Tomorrow we will be celebrating the Father’s Day Mass in the hall at 10am. We would love to see dads, grandfathers and other father-like figures join us for this special time to celebrate these wonderful men in our lives. We hope that all students take the time to make their dads/grandparents/uncles feel very special this Sunday.
End of Term Liturgy/Coloured Socks Day
Our Year 4 end of term liturgy will be held on Thursday 14th September, in the hall. We will be celebrating all of our opportunities and learning from this Term. We will also be showcasing our dancing skills that Mrs Fisher has taught us. This liturgy will be held at 12pm. Parents are encouraged to wear their own ‘dancing shoes’. Students are asked to wear jeans or a denim skirt (no shorts) and a checked/plain shirt (no hats) for the day.
Please be mindful that this is also our ‘Crazy Coloured Sock’ Day as well. Wear your craziest socks, wear your sun safe coloured clothes, suitable footwear, brimmed hat and bring along a gold coin for the Catholic Missions. We are also asking families to donate a new pair of socks with their gold coin – The Gold coin going to Catholic Mission and Socks to The Base Soup Kitchen.
Year 4 Gala Day
Our Year 4 Gala Day for Touch Football will be held on Tuesday of the final week of this term – 12th September. Permission slips were released on the Sentral App last week. Please complete these permission slips as soon as possible. Students will need to be at school by 8.30am to be on the bus. Many thanks to Mrs Wigan for organising this exciting day for us.
As the term end nears, this is a great time to remind your child to be resilient and show persistence and kindness, both within the classroom and in their friendship groups. The teachers certainly encourage this at school.
Have a great couple of weeks everyone!
Suzanne, Aleisha, Jessica and Danielle

Year 5
Can you believe that it is week 8?! We certainly cannot believe how quickly this term has flown by. Last week was a wonderful celebration of Loving the Arts at Lourdes. All the effort and hard work that goes into these days is well worth it when you see the joy that students have sharing their art, music and drama abilities with our community. With only two and half weeks remaining, we will be heads down for the remainder of the term, doing our best learning in preparation for our final term of Year 5.
Camp
Thank you to the 52 families who have completed the forms for camp, however we still have 20 families yet to complete this form. We greatly appreciate this, as collating information is a timely process. Forms are due by 1st September. Please refer to correspondence that was sent via email over the past two weeks.

- 31st August- Father's Day Mass, 10am

Curriculum
Religion – Students have explored influential individuals that have shaped the early Catholic Communities. These individuals include Mary MacKillop and Caroline Chisholm. Students are now beginning their next religious unit that explores the fertile question: How can believers live in their faith? Throughout this unit, students will identify ways in which faith can be shared and strengthened in communities of believers.
English – Students have commenced writing their English Assessments, taking on the perspective of a person living at the time of the Eureka Stockade. For their assessment piece, students are drafting, editing and publishing a historical narrative where they utilise their descriptive language features to create visualisation.
Maths – Students have commenced the next impact cycle, which involves describing and interpreting data sets. During this impact cycle, students will also create graphs, including side by side column graphs to display data sets. We will be continuing to touch on division, as continual practise in this concept will help consolidate the students' ability to solve problems as remainders, fractional remainders and as decimals. Don’t forget to encourage number facts (multiplication, division, addition and subtraction) at home, to assist automaticity in this area.
HASS – We have utilised our research skills to investigate a significant person from the 1800’s. Many students have selected Peter Lalor and Mary Mackillop, while others have chosen Caroline Chisholm, Bennelong, Thomas Mitchell or Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson. Using their research, they are completing a PowerPoint Presentation, which not only highlights biographical information, but examines why these people are significant figures and how they have impacted the development of Australia. This task is only to be completed at school, as students are using not only websites, but books to find primary and secondary sources of information.
Science – Students have explored both animal and plant adaptations and how both have evolved over time. The students have learned about animal adaptations, including echolocation and nocturnality, and plant adaptations, such as transpiration, to ensure the survival of species in different habitats and climates around the world.
Thanks for reading,
Emily, Jess, and Amy

Year 6
Week 8 already! Term 3 certainly is flying by. Last week was a huge week and continued the trend of lasts for the Year 6 students – their last book week celebrations at OLOL, their last Reader’s Cup at OLOL and their last round of interschool sport at OLOL. While it is always sad when something good comes to an end, the adventure that awaits these students in the coming 12 weeks is exciting and something to look forward to.
A big thank you to the waiters that served on Tuesday evening at the Lourdes Art Festival. They did a wonderful job, they were polite and respectful, Mrs Wagner was very grateful and highly impressed. Well done to Harry and Mykala who performed an oral presentation on the night, they were both very entertaining.
Congratulations to the Year 6 boys who competed in the Wayne Beeston Rugby League Shield. The boys played well and whilst they tried their best, results didn’t go their way. They had the unfortunate luck of playing St Mary’s and Millmerran in the pool stage, both teams eventually played in the decider. They should be very proud of the way they played and the sportsmanship they displayed.
Well done to all the Year 6 students who participated in the Reader’s Cup. Students from Years 5 and 6 were placed into groups of four and answered questions related to the 2 books which they have been reading – Jed and Stolen Girl. The students enjoyed themselves and received a bookmark for participating.
A few reminders: Prep photos are needed for the graduation ceremony next term. The ones that have come through already are very cute. Parent interviews begin next week, if you haven’t booked and would like to, please add your name to the available time slots. The students are completing a few assessments in the coming weeks, refer to the assessment timetable for more information.
As we prepare for the conclusion of this term, the Year 6 teachers would like to invite parents to attend our Camp information night on Monday 11th September at 5:00pm. This is an opportunity to find out about the trip to Yeppoon, the activities, accommodation, travelling, medication procedures etc and an opportunity for you to ask questions. Parents will be provided with a pack containing equipment lists and items to pack.
Kylie, Shauna, and Steve

The Arts - Twilight Art Exhibition
What a wonderful week of celebrating The Arts! Our Loving the Arts at Lourdes Twilight and concert events were a wonderful success providing a platform for showcasing student Visual Art, Drama, Dance and Music at our school. The event allowed us to share our talented student work with family, friends and the OLOL community. A big thank you to everyone involved in organizing this event, including the many teachers who made it come to life. It was great to see so many families in attendance and thank you for your continued support of the Arts. We are looking forward to sharing something similar with you next year.
Thank You:
Mr Des Verdon for sharing his talent painting Mr. Ross Haylock’s portrait on the night.
Ms Mandy McGuire for her donation of our auction item, “Valkyrie” by Kurt Black.
Mrs Liz Wagner for her help with accessing the art display boards and for organising the food.
The P&F for organising the refreshments.
The Year 6 students for giving of their time to help with the food service.
Mrs Ebony Rosier and Mr Mitch Humphrys, for the wonderful music on the night.
Mrs. Nikki Moffat from Air Affair Co for the donation of our entry balloons. Nikki@airaffairco.com.au. Check out her Facebook page.
Thank you for your ongoing support of The Arts!
