Dear Parents and Carers
Quite often I receive positive comments about the standard of behaviour of Lourdes kids, especially at events outside of school such as carnivals, excursions etc. Whilst it is reassuring to receive such comments, it should not come as any great surprise. We place high regard on regular check-ins with students on our expectations of behaviour, manners, and how to act in different contexts. I suppose you could call it “fence” or “boundary” maintenance. Children have an innate ability to detect a weak boundary and failure to maintain boundaries sends a wrong message, expectations fall, and strong culture diminishes.
There is an adage that school should be an extension of the home. One challenge for parents and schools is in this area of permissible behaviours and the establishment of appropriate support to ensure children’s potential can be developed and nurtured during these important formative years. “When must lights go out? When is homework to be done? Amount of screen time? When must you say please and thank you? What is the proper etiquette when entering a Church, theatre, friends’ house etc? Sportsmanship? And a host of other battlegrounds that can lead to the premature whitening of hair!
Some parents get exhausted by the warfare. Worn down by pester power and intimidated by their children’s growing physical strength and ability to have the last word, some parents capitulate. Others prefer to be their children’s best friend rather than their best parent. Kids need boundaries within which to operate. If the fences are weak and undefended, kids will break through. Repeatedly asking them not to lean on the fence is about as useless as playing the flute and expecting the rats to follow. It only happens in fairy tales. If a fence is weak as some parental and academic fences can be, many young people run the risk of crossing the boundaries of acceptable behaviour.
A weak fence tells a young person that this particular expectation is not thought very important by adults…I wonder why it's not worth defending…I’ll give it a little nudge.
I have often said that primary school is the training ground for life. Kids won’t know what permissible or acceptable behaviour is if they are not taught to know what the boundaries are and experience regular reminders and consequences if the fence gets lent-on or at times jumped! There of course is no expectation of perfection. School is the training ground for becoming decent human beings. There will be times of trial and error. Kids will make mistakes and overstep the boundaries but how we respond will determine the success of turning these times into learning opportunities.
If we take the trouble to build a strong fence and expectations that will withstand the odd bump or two, the boundaries become both known and respected. Young people generally admire strength. The teachers who are strong are the ones who are remembered with genuine fondness. Care needs to be taken not to confuse the setting of boundaries with oppressive restrictions. The strong teacher and firm parent need not be strangers to compassion and sensitivity.
One particular area I always struggle to understand is weak boundaries around the uniform code and acceptable haircuts. Parents have a perfect ally in the school rules and Mr Golightly when it comes to ensuring the correct standard of uniform is worn or the most recent haircut fad is a cause for argument. School expectations and rules provide a clear boundary. Unfortunately, some parents may think…it's just a haircut or no big deal if they have different socks…why make a big deal about it? What this thinking fails to understand is that choosing to be a member of a community means that sometimes we have to accept things that we may not like, and that is a part of life. Most of us work out that we cannot just do what we want to do all the time.
Your ongoing effort in maintaining strong boundaries and supporting school expectations will greatly assist the ongoing success of the school community.

Prep 2024 Enrolments
Enrolments for Prep 2024 are underway and we request that any current families who have siblings looking to enter Prep in 2024 (children born 01 July 2018 to 30 June 2019), if you have not already done so, would you please complete and submit your enrolment form as soon as possible. This will greatly assist us with our number allocations of new families looking at joining our school family and community.
Siblings of existing families do not require a formal interview with our Principal, however, if you feel you would like one, please contact Reception and we will schedule a meeting.
Enrolment forms can be found under the 'For Parents' tab on our website Our Lady of Lourdes Primary (ololtwb.catholic.edu.au)
If you have any questions or require further information, please email enrolments at enrolments@ololtwb.catholic.edu.au or phone us on 4591 1200.
School Fees
School Fees for Term 1 2023 will be emailed out to families this afternoon and once they have been sent, a notification will be sent out via the Parent Portal, SMS and the OLOL Facebook Memos Page. If they are not in your inbox, please check your junk/spam folders.
BPay is our preferred method of payment, however we will accept payment of fees via Internet Banking (EFT Transfer) or you can come into the office and pay with cash, Eftpos or credit card.
If paying by EFT Transfer, please ensure you use your family code of OLOxxx (found at the top left of your statement, note it is OLO as in Our Lady Of), as your reference. It is imperative that you do not use either your: name, childs first and/or last name, business name or trust account name as a reference because this can cause complications with having payments inadvertently coded to the wrong family.
If you would prefer to pay via a formalised Direct Debit arrangement, please contact Hazel our Finance and Administration Officer for the appropriate paperwork.
Faith & Religious Education News
We thank all those who were able to celebrate our Beginning of School Mass on the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes last Friday.
Father reminded us that we are part of a very special team here at Our Lady of Lourdes. We work together to make our school a wonderful kind place. It is a place where we learn to be the best person we can be by following the example of Jesus and by being CALLed to Think as a Lourdes Learner and a Global Citizen.

Last Monday the Year 6 students participated in a “BE KIND Retreat”. We thank St Ursula’s College for allowing us to use their Chapel and Kerrilaw Lawn while we completed our activities. The Year 6 children did some thinking and group activities about how they can work on being kind. We were very impressed with their willingness to think and share their thoughts. Each child made a personal promise which they plan to live up to this year.

Tomorrow these beautiful children will be presented with their Leadership badges at our Year 6 Leadership Assembly starting at 1:45pm in the OLOL School hall. These children have been aspiring leaders since Prep and are committed to being the best leaders they can be.
Olivia Hancock and Michael Denny, our 2023 School Captains, will represent OLOL at the Caritas Lenten Launch at St Patrick’s Cathedral at 9:00am Mass on Sunday 19th February.
The season of Lent starts in Week 5. Lent is a time of reflection, opportunities to make improvements in our lives by preparing to be better people – this is also preparation for the wonderful season of Easter. Lent goes for 6 weeks and the colour in the church changes from green to purple. Just before Lent begins we celebrate Shrove Tuesday ( or Pancake Tuesday) this was a day when people traditionally used up all their eggs, butter and milk before the strict restrictions of Lent started.
Our Shrove Tuesday breakfast will start at 7:30am on Tuesday 21st February and our Ash Wednesday prayer will be on Wednesday 22nd February in the school hall at 2pm . All are welcome to join us.
We do request donations of pancake mix, Maple Syrup, serviettes and paper plates in readiness for our annual Shrove Tuesday pancake breakfast. Thank you to those who have already made donations. Donations can be brought to classrooms or left at the office. Pancakes can be purchased for 50c. The money raised will be donated to the Lenten Appeal for Caritas. Our Year 6 Leadership groups will be cooking and serving on this morning. All Year 6 helpers will need to be at school with an apron and their sunniest smiles by 7 am.
The preparation for the Confirmation and 1st Eucharist Sacramental programme for children in Year 4 and up - begins with the first parent meeting at 10:30 am on Sunday 26th February in the OLOL Church. An email has been sent to all families in Year 4 and up regarding this programme – a forms note should have been completed by Monday 13th February and returned to the Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. The Parish co-ordinates the program. If you have any questions or concerns, please email the olol.parish@bigpond.com or call them between 9am – 1pm weekdays on 07 46341453.
Dates for your Diary:
Friday 17th March- St Patrick’s Day Green Coloured Clothes day. Wear something sunsafe green and please bring a gold coin for our Caritas Lenten Mission Appeal.
Thursday 30th March – Holy Week Assembly 11 am in school hall
God Bless and have a great week!

Last week, I wrote about our school teaching and learning motto: Lourdes Learners are CALLed to Think as both a Learner and a Global Citizen. This week I will share our information on the first trait, Lourdes Learners communicate as a learner and global citizen.

Communicate as a Global Citizen
There is no doubt that we are living in a fast-paced, ever-changing technological world where text-based communication is prevalent. Text messages, emails, news articles, and social media posts are just some examples of the many forms of communication. Due to the lack of vocal tone and context of text-based communications, the message is often misconstrued. Readers of this type of communication need to think critically about the message trying to be delivered. Communicating effectively is a vital skill.
Our students need to learn how to communicate in any given situation. They need to be able to express ideas to diverse audiences. Presenting information in a variety of digital and non-digital formats, using different elements such as voice, symbols, illustrations, and text is important. Providing opportunities to demonstrate skills in a broad variety of situations and to different audiences helps our learners speak confidently, deliver an argument with evidence, and use the appropriate modes of communication to convey their ideas. Thus, we encourage our students to communicate as global citizens.
Naplan
This year, our Year 3 and Year 5 students will begin NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) in Week 8 of Term 1. Prior to this, students will complete practice tests that will have similar questions and format to the actual tests, and classrooms will be set up the way they will be for NAPLAN in Week 8.
This brochure has more parent information about the purpose of NAPLAN, what it assesses, and key points for parents to know.
If you would like to do some practice at home, you can do so via the public demonstration site.

Prep
Prep is beginning to buzz along nicely - we now know what a classroom feels like, sounds like and looks look. We have established our work behaviours and understand our routines.
We know - that the more you practise the better you get!
- if you don’t listen you won’t learn!
- if you have a problem, find a solution!
Homework is progressing nicely - please don’t make it a chore. Always encourage and help your child to complete the letter of the week activity, but night time reading to your child is the most important task.
Wednesday for both Prep classes is library day - your child must return their borrowed books before they can borrow more.
Please encourage the Lourdes Way at home - your child should be able to explain what it means and how it helps them to make good choices.
We hope to see lots of Prep families at the school welcome barbeque this Friday. We sell jelly cups as a Prep fundraiser - come along and enjoy meeting others while you enjoy a jelly cup with a frog!
Till next time ...

Year 1
It’s week 4 already and the children in year one are continuing to practice routines, grade one behaviour and consequently are now starting to dive deeper into their learning.
In English, we are re-visiting the text, Tom Tom by Rosemary Sullivan to enable us to understand the story so that we can write a description of the character Tom Tom. The children have made connections with the character and have used comprehension strategies to answer questions about the text. They have learnt that literal questions mean that the answer is ‘right there’ in the text.
Last week in Maths, the children explored the concept of part-part whole as a lead in to investigating addition and subtraction this week. They are learning that when we add, our collection will get bigger and that when we subtract, our collection will get smaller.
Homework appears to be going well. Thank you for your support with this. Homework is sent home every Monday and is to be returned on Friday or the following Monday. Remember, to read each night and encourage your child to complete homework neatly.
Looking forward to catching up with everyone at the welcome barbecue.
Welcome BBQ and Disco
Come one, come all!
Come to the grade one chocolate stall.
Lots of chocolate to be won.
Come along and have some fun!
Jen, Dennielle and Laura
Year 2
Welcome to Week 4. This week in Maths, we will use our schema of what we already know about place value to understand 3-digit numbers. Students will be recognising, partitioning, and expanding 3-digit numbers using mathematical tools.
Our Religion unit is well underway, and we have been discussing stories of Creation and learning about God's message of the importance of all living things and our responsibility to look after the environment. Through discussions, we will make connections and consider: How can I share the messages of creation in my world?
In English, we will continue to explore simple sentences over the next couple of weeks and experiment with bumping them up using noun groups, vocabulary and conjunctions.
We look forward to seeing families at the Welcome BBQ and Disco this Friday night (5:30-8:30pm) - a reminder that students need to be accompanied by an adult on the night.
Next week, we will celebrate Shrove Tuesday with a pancake morning – donations of pancake mix, maple syrup and serviettes would be appreciated. Pancakes will be sold before school for 50c each.
Have a great week!
Sarah, Ange B and Ange G
Year 3
What a fantastic past couple of weeks! The Year 3s have been settling into their new routines and enjoying the exciting content across all subject areas.
Last week in HASS, we had the privilege of interviewing Roya, our OLOL IT Guru, and listening to her story about moving from Iran to Australia. The students loved learning about the differences (and some similarities) in culture, landscape, language, dance, and music! Students are continuing learning about Australian Icons and exploring Australia’s map.
In Health, students recently learnt about positive qualities that support them in being a great friend and Global Citizen. In the coming weeks, they will explore different emotional responses and strategies to support them in regulating back to the Green Zone.
Students have been working very hard in Maths rotations learning about number patterns, multiplication, and division. We will go on to explore different strategies to use when solving addition and subtraction problems.
We are particularly proud of how far students’ have come in their Writing already. They are making very thoughtful choices with their vocabulary and exploring different sentence types. Students are growing more confident highlighting and locating key words in different texts and searching for clues to answer a variety of questions.
Recently, the Year 3 teachers have been discussing our observations of students’ fantastic attitude towards learning and Global Citizen behaviours both inside and outside of the classroom. We have decided to gather as a cohort every Friday to acknowledge these students and celebrate their hard work and great choices. After recognising their success, these super star students are then rewarded with a Zooper Dooper to enjoy.
A special thank you for your support in ensuring students’ homework is completed to the best of their ability. Last week, we were very close to having a 100% completion rate throughout the cohort. This is outstanding!
Have a great weekend and please email through any questions.
Demi, Toni and Garry

Year 4
The Year 4s are enjoying their new routines and getting into the swing of school life once again, after the holidays. Thank for your attendance at our information night and let us know if you have any more questions.
This term in Hass we are learning about the lives of Aboriginal and Islander people prior to 1788. Some of the topics covered include farming, tool technology and The Dreamtime. In Maths we are learning to round off numbers to the nearest ten and extending to hundreds, thousands and beyond. We are working hard to become confident with our multiplication and division facts and brushing up on simple addition as well.
Each Friday we rotate between the three Year 4 teachers for sport, art and technology. It is so lovely to get to know all the year 4s and for them to get to know us as well.
In Week 5, it is Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. We do request donations of pancake mix, Maple Syrup, serviettes, and paper plates in readiness for our annual Shrove Tuesday pancake breakfast at 7:30 am on Tuesday 21st February. Donations can be brought to classroom at any time prior to this day.
In Week 6 assembly will be presented by 4V and Week 7 will be 4T. Assembly commences at 2pm and parents are very welcome.
Thanks for encouraging homework and library books to be returned on the correct day. We are off to a great start for the year with plenty of enthusiasm for learning. Our theme this year is kindness, so feel free to reinforce this at home as well. We are encouraging the students to look outside of themselves and care for others both in the classroom and in the playground. Let us know if we can help in any way throughout the year. Email is the best way to contact us. Enjoy the week-end!
Suzanne, Aleisha and Jessica
Year 5
Emu Gully
What a great leadership day our students had at Emu Gully last Friday. Most encouragingly, all students attempted the activities, requiring them to harness their courage, listen to and use the support of their peers, and set a target of success. Overcoming challenges is an inevitable part of life, and not shying away from these takes, not only courage, but skills and strategy. All the students have grown, with many of them identifying that, as a leader, listening to others and having an "it's not all about me” mindset is what they need to be aware of to support others around them.
Important dates
- 17th Feb – Welcome Disco (5:30pm- 8:30pm)
- 21st Feb – Shrove Tuesday (Pancake morning from 7.30am)
- 22nd Feb – Ash Wednesday (Prayer Assembly @ 2pm)
- 17th March – St Patricks Day (free dress & gold coin donation)

English – students are continuing to explore the role of figurative language (simile, metaphor and personification) for use in descriptive writing. We continue to revise grammar in context, developing ideas and sentence structures.
Maths – we are moving into our next impact cycle which focuses on different methods for solving multiplication of larger numbers. Students will look at methods such as contracted multiplication, long multiplication, area model and lattice methods. Remember to encourage the practise of times tables!
Parent Info Night
Thank you to the families that attended the parent information evening last week. A copy of the slides was sent home. If you have any questions, please contact us.
Homework
We have officially gone through 2 weeks of homework. It appears that we have ironed out any initial technology problems. A reminder that students have the following for homework each week:
- 1 x Reading Eggspress task
- 1 x Maths Online Revision set
- 2 x Maths Online Tasks
- Spelling Assignment in Teams (via Office365)
- 20 minutes of reading at least five times per week

Year 6
What a busy couple of weeks we’ve had to begin the year! Our Yr. 6 students have settled in splendidly and are already proving to be responsible, enthusiastic leaders. We’ve completed our first unit of work in Mathematics on square numbers as well as prime and composite numbers. We’ll be working on integers for the next week. Flexible groupings have been working a treat. Students have enthusiastically joined in whole cohort Maths lessons each Thursday – there has been much laughter and competitiveness. A small group of students have also enjoyed some Maths extension activities during this time and have blown us away with their problem-solving abilities. Our first written assessment in English was completed last week – an introductory letter to class teachers. We have begun reading our first novel “Home to Mother”. You can hear a pin drop during modelled reading lessons with this novel proving to be a real hit! Students are working on their first assessment piece in Religion – a PowerPoint presentation on a significant Australian who has spread the New Law of Jesus in Australia.
Our trip to Treetops at Mt Tamborine last Friday was fantastic – loads of resilience, persistence and encouragement from all who attended. Zip lines proved to be the most popular way to get around!
Thanks to Mrs Moore who facilitated a retreat for our Year 6 students last Monday at St Ursula’s College. Our focus was on how we can be kind.
Homework: Thanks to families who have supported our homework routines. Homework is handed out and/or uploaded each Friday and due back to school the following Friday. Additional tasks will, at times, be sent home – students will need to listen for due dates for these. Students have already been given passwords for all websites that we will regularly use – additional copies of these passwords are available at school.
Year 6 Leadership Assembly: Thursday 16th February 1.45pm in the Hall. Students will need to wear their formal day uniforms with polished shoes where necessary.
Swimming Success: Congratulations to our Year 6 students who have been selected to represent our school at the West Zone Carnival this Tuesday 14th February.
Friday Sport: We will play our first round of Friday Sport this Friday. Students are reminded to have all the required safety gear, hats and plenty of water each week.
Testing Folders: As a teaching team, we appreciate how important it is that parents and carers are kept well informed of how students are achieving and progressing. Accordingly, test papers, Friday spelling tests and the like will be forwarded home. We would appreciate parents initialling the top right-hand corner of pages before they’re returned to school.
School Times: A reminder that the school day begins at 8.25am and concludes at 3.00pm. Every minute at school counts. As mentioned, if students miss school due to illness, they are strongly encouraged to check their timetables and then Canvas accounts to catch up on any missed work. Please refrain from collecting students early. We would also appreciate if appointments, where possible, could be scheduled out of school hours.
Shrove Tuesday: Tuesday, February 21st, is Shrove Tuesday. Our Year 6 leaders are asked to arrive at school by 7.0am on this morning to assist with cooking the pancakes.
