Dear Parents & Carers
As the busyness of Term 4 can at times tend to consume our thoughts, it is important that we take some quality time to reflect on the year that has been, celebrate achievements and offer gratitude for what we have and for what others have done for us.
One of the sadder parts of the end of each school year is that it is time to bid farewell to our senior students. Nearing the end of assessment tasks, now is usually the time to reflect on their journey through primary school. Over the next couple of weeks, there will be a number of things they will do for the very last time and hopefully this will spark many treasured memories of their time here at Our Lady of Lourdes. They have all been great ambassadors for their school, families and have been a credit to themselves in what they have achieved, especially in their final year.
As a school, we take time to celebrate and reflect on their journey at two very special occasions. On Thursday 24th November at 12:00pm is our final whole school assembly. Our Year 6 classes will host this event and showcase their memories and many talents. We will also take the time at this assembly to present various academic awards to those students in Years 5 & 6, who have achieved success in their studies throughout the year.
On Tuesday 29th November, at 6:30pm a Graduation Mass is held in their honour. This is always a very special occasion for the children and their families. It also gives us the opportunity to say thank you to the contribution of those families who finish their time here upon the Graduation of their youngest child.
With this being the second last newsletter of the year, I will take this opportunity to recognise the wonderful contribution our Year 6 cohort has made to Our Lady of Lourdes. I, along with their teachers, have only but admiration of their growth, achievements, and positive attitude towards school life. The end of each year brings a sense of excitement in the lead up to Christmas, but it is a time where we must sadly say goodbye to our Year 6 students. I have had the absolute privilege to have been able to witness their journey since their first day of Prep.
On behalf of the school community, I wish each and every one of our departing Year 6 students all the very best for your transition into secondary school. I trust you will thoroughly enjoy your remaining school days here at OLOL.
Remembrance Day
This Friday our Year 6 students will host a special assembly to commemorate Remembrance Day. The ceremony will commence at 11:00 am in the Church. All students from Years 3-6 will be attending. Parents and parishioners are most welcome to attend.
Volunteers’ Morning Tea
To all our parents, grandparents and friends who give up their time to volunteer at the school, I extend a cordial invitation to you all to attend our annual volunteer's morning tea on Tuesday 15th November at 10:00am. This will provide an opportunity to say a big thank you for all that you do. Your efforts as classroom helpers, tuckshop assistants, fundraising organizers, etc. do not go unnoticed and contribute significantly to the ongoing success of the school.
Leadership Speeches
Our Year 5 students who are seeking election for school leadership positions in 2023 will deliver their speeches on Thursday 17th November in the Church at 8:45am. I certainly wish them all the best in their endeavours. The elected students will be announced at the end of year Mass on Friday 2nd December at 12:00 noon.
Swimming Carnival
Our annual swimming carnival will be held on Wednesday 30th November at the Glennie Pool for students in Grades 3-6 only. Families have been sent an online form to complete for event nomination and consent to attend the carnival. It is expected that all students compete in at least one event on the day. Please take time to read all relevant information about the swimming carnival. Please note that students need to be dropped off and collected from the Glennie Pool. Children who attend before and after-school care will be walked to and from Glennie for the carnival. Please advise your class teacher if your child needs to be walked to and from the Pool.
Class Placements 2023
Classes for 2023 school year are still being finalized. All families will be notified of which class their child is in during the last week of term. Placement of students in classes involves input from their current teachers, Learning Support Teachers and school leadership team members. A number of considerations are taken into account, the main one being an individual student’s academic interests. Other factors include a balance in each class in the number of boys and girls, number of students requiring additional support, friendship groups and best fit for positive relationships within the classroom.
Outstanding School Fees
It is most important that your prompt attention to ensure all outstanding school fee invoices are paid by the end of school term. This is an extremely busy time of year and chasing up overdue accounts draws precious time and effort away from other school initiatives and activities. The school too, has many financial commitments to fulfill by the end of the year and over the school holidays. Your support in paying your fees and levies in full will greatly assist the school to continue to provide and upgrade school and classroom resources.
Christmas Celebrations
The students will be involved in a number of upcoming Christmas activities and end of year celebrations.
- Wed 16th Nov Years 3-5 Christmas Concert at 11:00am in the hall
- Mon 21st Nov Prep – Year 2 Christmas Concert at 2:00pm in the hall
- Fri 25th Nov End of Year whole school disco – Christmas theme

Licence Plate Recognition Vehicle - School Patrols
Council has recently acquired a Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) vehicle which is equipped to take high quality images of vehicles that have parked unlawfully. By driving past the location, the LPR vehicle will enable council to penalise non-compliant parking by posting infringement notices. The LPR is often only detected by offending drivers when an infringement is received in the mail. Regular routine patrols will commence imminently.
Learning beyond the school grounds
This term I was fortunate to attend both the Year 6 and Year 5 camps. Filled with individual and teamwork challenges, responsibilities in managing their time and belongings, and fun experiences, school camps provide students tremendous opportunities to learn new skills and interact with each other beyond the school grounds. Friendships are tested. Patience and resilience are tested, and yet, memorable moments are made.
While Year 6 enjoyed caving, boom netting, and snorkelling around Great Keppel Island, Year 5 were amused with body boarding, archery, and rock climbing. It was wonderful to get to know the children in a different setting and see students actively participating in all activities. Barely any child complained even though parents were missed, legs were tired, and inner thighs were chafed! Persevering and maintaining an optimistic outlook were impressive traits demonstrated by all, despite tiredness from a day in the sunshine and activities that seemed too hard.
Joy and laughter were witnessed on both camps amongst students and educators alike. I certainly enjoyed spending time with both the students and teachers and really appreciated teachers spending their own time away from their families to assist and support students on camp. Late nights and early mornings were more than tolerable with a fantastic team.
Importantly, our Year 5 and 6 campers this year really represented their school, their parents, and themselves tremendously well. They made us proud and it was a privilege to be there for both camps to witness the learning and enjoyment.
Academic Awards
The presentation of academic awards for the Year 5 & 6 students will occur at the final school assembly of the year. Individual awards presented include: -
- Serviam Award - Presented to one boy and one girl from the Year 6 cohort, who have consistently demonstrated and upheld the mission of the school. Through their actions they have lived “The Lourdes Way” and have made a significant contribution to maintaining the culture of the school. They have answered the call to think & act as a learner and global citizen.
- Academic Excellence – Presented to up to two students per year level. In all learning areas, this award is for consistent outstanding level of academic achievement; engagement in the learning process; and application to their work and class-based assessment.
- Diligence Award – Presented up to six students per year level. In all learning areas, this award is for consistent high level of effort and dedication to learning, and a high level of academic achievement
- Enhancement of Learning - Up to six students per year level who have, through determination and consistent effort, demonstrated significant growth and improvement in learning.
- Arts Award - Up to two students per year who have demonstrated a high level of effort and aptitude across all areas of the Arts and school-based productions or exhibitions.
- Athlete of the Year Award - Presented to one boy and one girl from Year 5 or Year 6 who have excelled in the sporting arena. A criteria and points system are in place which give due recognition to representative honours in school, zone, region and state teams or individual sports.
We look forward to the Awards Presentation at our final assembly. Our 2023 school leaders will be announced at the End of Year Mass on the last day of term.

Congratulations Fairy Tale detectives! Well done to everyone – we had a fantastic Banquet as you can see in the photos that follow. We are now very good at asking questions that begin with who, where, when, why and what.
Ho! Ho! Ho! Christmas at Prep has just begun,
We know we’re going to have lots of fun!
We hope to have a special visitor (Santa) pop in during the last week of school. Please drop a wrapped book with your child’s name on it into the office before 28th November.
All families received an invitation to our Prep to Grade 2 concert on the 21st November – hope you can come along.
Each year we visit St Vincent’s Nursing Home and Blue Care Nursing Home to entertain the residents. This is happening on Thursday, 17th November. The children paint a picture and sing some Christmas carols. Cost of the bus will be added to your fees.
Keep on smiling,
Melita, Tabitha and Liz
Year 1
Welcome to week 6...less than twenty days to go.
Whilst the grade one children have been busy consolidating all year one learning, they have also taken time to be scientists and to be authors.
All the children enjoyed exploring sound and light during their Day of Science last week. They discovered the sources of both light and sound as they conducted investigations and participated in activities.
The children in 1M enjoyed visiting the children at Little Miracles Kindergarten on Monday. At the Kindy, they proudly shared their published stories to the children.
Learning the counting strategy of bridging through ten has been challenging for some students this math's cycle. The children have discovered the importance of having quick recall of rainbow facts. Please keep practicing these facts at home.
This week, the children will start creating their timelines. In Religion, they have been reading the stories in the Bible to uncover facts about Mary. As we have gathered information about Mary, we have built a timeline of key events in her life. This will help when the children create their own.
Have a great week.

Year 2
This week in Year 2 we are reflecting on our wonderful visit to the zoo last week. We learnt so much about the animals from all over the world, and thoroughly enjoyed listening to the fascinating talks from the animal experts. Thanks to the parents who joined us and made the day go so smoothly.
The next few weeks are extremely busy with many things to look forward to. This week we had a visit from a shoe tying expert from Ascent Footwear. We were all given a kit to take home so we will all know how to tie our laces ready for Year 3.
In English we are starting to look at writing recounts. Our sentences are getting better as we try our hardest to vary our beginnings and use interesting vocabulary. In Maths we are brushing up on our money skills. We are learning how to purchase items and gathering the correct combination of coins. In Science we are making a life cycle and creating a habitat for our chosen animal.
For Christmas we are still needing some hamper items to fill our baskets for St Vincent De Paul.
Secret Santa information has been sent home. Students will need to bring in a non-edible gift valued at around $5, for their Secret Santa by the 28th of November.
In Week 8 we also have our Christmas concert on Monday commencing at 2.00pm and a Bunning’s Workshop on the Tuesday.
Please fill in the permission note on Sentral for our trip to the movies in Week 9.
Thanks for your wonderful support. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact us.

Year 3
We are very close to the end of the year – it is hard to believe it is almost over! Tomorrow (Friday 11th November), we will be attending the Remembrance Day assembly at 11:00am and next Wednesday, we have the Years 3-5 Christmas Concert at 11:00am – all are welcome to join us. Students will be wearing their Christmas shirts they have painted at school and any students playing a character will be provided their costume for the play.
Secret Santa notes went out last week – gifts are due at school by Monday 28th November (Week 9). Please let your child’s teacher know if there is any problem with them participating or if your child will not be here in the last week of school.
Thank you for your contributions to the St Vincent de Paul Christmas hampers – these can be brought in right up until the end of term.
This week, we are continuing our Christmas shirt painting, reviewing 3D objects and money in Maths, exploring temperature in Science and further exploring important Australian places and landmarks in HASS. In Religion, we have started exploring parables and the messages we can draw from them to apply to our own lives.
Have a great week.
Angela, Sarah, Demi and Janice
Year 4
As always, the school term comes quickly to an end. It seems the term has barely begun and yet all classes are busy with assessment and reporting. In general, our classes are continuing to work very well. Students’ writing has shown a marked improvement from the year’s beginning, as has their reading and comprehension ability. Mr Golightly briefly spoke to all this week, to remind them of the school’s expectation for ongoing great behaviour as learners and as friends in the playground. Continue to talk with your child reminding them of what is expected.
You are invited to our end of year liturgy to be held at 10:00am in the church, on November 23rd. Afterwards, you may wish to join us for a shared morning tea and we would ask that all students bring a small plate to share.
Tomorrow (Friday 11th November) Yr 3 to 6 classes will be attending the Remembrance Day assembly at 11:00am and next Wednesday, we have the Years 3-5 Christmas Concert at 11:00am – all are welcome to join us. Please be aware of the costume requirements - Christmas shirt, school sports shorts, white socks, joggers and Santa hat.
Thank you for your contributions to the St Vincent de Paul Christmas hampers – these can be brought in right up until the end of term.
All Year 4 classes will be participating in Secret Santa this year – please look out for individual class details.
All students are encouraged to participate in our annual swimming carnival. It is expected that all children in Grades 3-6 nominate themselves for at least one event. Less confident swimmers can use a noodle or kickboard if necessary and nominate for the 25m Freestyle. It is all about showing sportsmanship and enjoying the day. All nominations need to be in by Monday 21st November.

In the Classroom: We certainly cannot let our foot off the gas pedal yet, as we have plenty to keep us busy. Over the next two weeks we will be conducting our end of term assessments. This will leave very little time for catch up. The next two weeks will consist of:
- Religion – With All Saints day occurring last week, we have been exploring Saints and their prayers. We have investigated different saints and will continue to focus on prayer to these saints, different styles of prayer and the rosary.
- English – Evaluative Reviews which bring in real world historical contexts including 9/11 and the following war in Afghanistan. Our assessment task will require students to write a review based on Australian and Turkish perspectives from the book One Minutes Silence. We have been working on Reviews and their features all term and are looking forward to seeing how they tie all their knowledge together.
- Maths – We have completed two impact cycles already, nets and missing quantities in balanced equations. Over the next three weeks we will move back to reviewing whole numbers, decimals and fractions, while also looking at patterns. On Thursday's students continue to explore symmetry with students loving the hands on and creative nature of this concept.
- HASS – So far students have explored the difference between needs and wants, types of resources and how decisions are made in relation to natural, human and capital resources. They have completed multiple pieces of formative assessment to show their level of understanding. We are moving into our final section on being a consumer and how people make decisions when buying things.
- Science – Students have completed their unit on Matter, Matter and have moved into a design technologies unit, that explores the environmental conditions that allow for the production food and fibre in Australia. Students are working towards designing a chicken coop that would provide necessary environmental conditions.

Less confident swimmers can use a noodle or kickboard if necessary and nominate for the 25m Freestyle. Please ensure that the uniforms you send back are clean and free of stains/marks where possible. It is a massive task for us to individually scrub and wash over 100 uniforms. A little tip for stain removal… Gumption is excellent for removing stains on jerseys!
There are also a number of uniforms still to be returned following the Monday Touch comp and Last Term’s Catholic Netball & Touch Carnivals. Please search your child/ren’s room to ensure you don’t have any Lourdes uniforms hidden away!

Thank you all once again for allowing your children to support the 'Garden Club's' Plant Stall. It was a huge success. Our Garden Club boys really love working towards and running their plant stall, and the kids are always very excited when it comes around.
Sarah Kelly and I are going to very much miss our senior boys Tim, Tyler and Darius, when they finish at the end of the year. It has been an absolute privilege and a joy being able spend time with these special boys, share our passion and watch them grow.
Pictured helping Darius at the stall is my son Nic, who is finishing his senior year also. Thanks for your help Nic.

Welcome to week 6 of term 4! We can see the end of term racing towards us as we begin the tail end of the year. We have had an absolute blast the last two weeks as we completed week 4 and 5. Our themes for these weeks were "Who are we?" and "Health and Wellbeing?". The children did a fantastic job during these weeks at completing a few more serious activities where we delved into some important topics such as acceptance, diversity and safety. We cannot wait to get into week 6 and we hope to see you all around!
