Ms Angela Gilbert / Mrs Sarah Jackman
Mr Garry Birch / Mr Chris Golightly
At the beginning of the term, Chris reminded staff about the powerful influence each staff member has on the students and families who choose Our Lady of Lourdes as the best place to educate their child(ren). To help remind staff about how fortunate we are, each staff member was gifted with a book, The Happiest Man on Earth, by Eddie Jaku.
Extremely compelling reading, Eddie writes the story of his own experiences as a holocaust survivor. Despite the tremendous hardships he has faced throughout his life, Eddie has overcome each difficult and heartbreaking moment. Eddie, a truly remarkable man, provides the reader with important lessons for life. Arguably, here are a few of the most powerful truths:
- Education is a lifesaver – teachers and all support staff working in education enrich the lives of young people and their families every day.
- Kindness is the greatest wealth of all. Kindness gives strength.
- Human beings survive through friendship, cooperation, and hope. Together we are strong.
If you find yourself a copy, do yourself a favor and read it because it is a worthwhile reminder to appreciate every moment of your life. As the blurb on the back of the book states, 'Life can be beautiful if you make it beautiful. It is up to you.'
Catholic Education Week
Celebrating Catholic Education Week was a wonderful reminder of how blessed we are to be a part of Catholic education. This year we acknowledged the fact that we are communities of faith, hope, and love. What a wonderful week we had honouring the long service of dedicated staff, joining together with other Toowoomba Catholic Schools at the Cathedral, enjoying time with our grandparents, having fun playing touch and netball with other catholic schools, and coming together as a staff to listen and learn about our important mission as educators.
Grandparent’s Day
Thank you to all our grandparents who made the special effort to come to our Grandparent’s Day Assembly. It was a tremendous success with our hall filled with students, staff, and grandparents enjoying the assembly led by Year 3. Many reports have come through saying our visitors were thrilled to be invited. Delighted to participate in activities in the children’s classrooms, grandparents discovered what the children have been learning in class. A lovely Lourdes community spirit was felt throughout the morning.
Catholic Netball and Touch Football Carnivals
It was tremendous to hear glowing reports about the behaviour and sportsmanship demonstrated by our Year 5 & 6 students and teachers at the carnivals last week. Reports of students encouraging each other, cheering, and picking up rubbish from the fields were really wonderful to hear. Well done!
Upcoming Events:
I hope you all have an enjoyable week ahead. And in the words of Eddie Jaku, remember to "Smile, because if you smile, the world smiles with you. Life is not always happiness. Sometimes, there are many hard days. But you must remember that you are lucky to be alive – we are all lucky in this way. Every breath is a gift. Life is beautiful if you let it be. Happiness is in your hands."
Thanks for reading

Writing at Lourdes
It was a wonderful opportunity for our Year 5 & 6 students to hear from Mark Wilson, Australian Author, and Illustrator this week. Closely linked to what I mentioned in last week’s newsletter about creating habits to make a change, if you want to be an author you must READ, READ, READ, but you must also WRITE, WRITE, WRITE. As part of our Writing Improvement Strategy, we are trying to develop confident writers who see themselves as authors.
Our Teaching & Learning/ Writing Team has been collaborating on the traits of Lourdes Writers who are CALLed to Think. We would love to hear your feedback. Let me know what you think. I wonder if you will start to hear or see these traits in our young Lourdes writers at home.

Faith & Religious Education News
Last week we celebrated Catholic Education Week. The theme was “Communities of Faith, Hope and Love.”
On Monday we congratulated the Long Service recipients of our staff: Angela Gilbert, Melita Hohn, Allyson Jessen, Wendy Mahoney and Aleisha Verdon. As well as Spirit of Catholic Education Nominee – Liz Wagner. We thank these members of our OLOL Community for their service and inspiration to Education.
On Tuesday Ms Murray and Mrs Moore had the pleasure of taking our School Captains Ellie and Frank to the Queensland Launch of Catholic Education Week at St Patrick’s Cathedral. We added our special Catholic Education School Symbol to the “Shadow Box of Diocesan School Symbols” We thank Mr Haylock for making our heart. The wood for the heart was from the Silky oak doors taken from Mr Golightly’s old office. Mr Haylock salvaged the doors before the old office was demolished.
On Wednesday, Year 3 led a beautiful assembly celebrating our wonderful Grandparents. We were so impressed with the wonderful attendance of about 250 grandparents on the coldest day of the week. Our Grandparents thoroughly enjoyed the prayer, visiting classrooms and morning tea. They are looking forward to returning next year to see our finished school construction.
On Friday it was the Bishop’s In-service Day. Students had a holiday, while all OLOL staff gathered at school for a prayerful In-service, lead by a virtual presentation from Brother Damien Price. Brother Damien reminded us to take time to be present with those we meet, share in their lives and show compassion by listening, supporting and being the change we want in the world.
We ended the week with the Parish thanking our school staff for their contributions towards the faith education of our children during Mass on Sunday.
This week we have been inspired by the selflessness of one of our Year 4 students – Dallis Etheridge who participated in the sleepout for the homeless – raising money for The Base Soup Kitchen – We are enormously proud of his efforts. During a radio interview I heard a representative of The Base Soup Kitchen talk about the things they need and use. One thing, that is especially useful, for those in difficult circumstances, is a new pair of clean socks.
Inspired by Dallas, I thought when we have our "Crazy Sock" coloured clothes day on Thursday 15th September - we could ask families to donate a new pair of socks with their gold coin – The Gold coin going to Catholic Mission and Socks to The Base Soup Kitchen. Socks can be sent in at any time. Please support both these initiatives to encourage our students to be thoughtful Global Citizens for our local and global communities.
We congratulate students who see a need and demonstrate a Global Citizenship approach to make our world a better place. Our own Oliver See in Year 4B is raising awareness of MS by participating in the MS Read-a-thon.
The 2nd meeting for children and parents involved in the preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation is on next Sunday, 7th August, after 9:30am Mass in the OLOL Church. Parents and their children will work on the second topic of their booklet in rotating groups.
The 3rd preparation meeting will be on Sunday 21st August after 9:30am Mass.
The Sacrament of First Reconciliation is on Tuesday, 6th September at 7.00pm. A short ceremony practice will be on Monday 5th August at 3:30pm in the OLOL Church.
Any questions or queries please contact the OLOL Parish office. (07 4634 1453 Monday – Friday 9.00am - 1.00pm) or email olol.parish@bigpond.com
The Prep to Year 3 children will celebrate the Feast Day of St Mary Mackillop with a special prayer celebration at 10 am in the OLOL Church on Monday 8th August. All are welcome to join us.
The Year 4-6 children will celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady – Mary, the Mother of Jesus on Monday 15th August with a Mass at 10.00am in the OLOL Church. Again, all are welcome to join us.
We celebrate our annual Fathers’ Day Mass on Wednesday 31st August at 10.00am in the OLOL school hall. All Dads, Granddads, Pas and Poppys are warmly invited to attend. Please email a photo of your Dad/Granddad/Poppy/Pa with their children, for our Fathers’ Day Photostory, to Mrs Moore (Janice.Moore@twb.catholic.edu.au ) one photo per family, by Wednesday 24th August 2022.
Have a great week!
Cheers

Prep
Welcome to the month of August! This is a very exciting month for Prep. During this month we gather a daily weather report as part of our Science Unit. At the end of the month, we collate the data and construct a picture graph using the information.
Also, August is our Mystery Reader Month! All Mums, Dads, grandparents, etc are invited to pop into the classroom any time and read the class their favourite picture book. Please avoid Tuesday between 11.00am and 12.20pm and Wednesday between 12.20pm and 2.30pm. Please don’t tell your child when you’re coming - it’s very exciting when you turn up, we ring the bell and announce the Mystery Reader!!
We are off to Cobb & Co this Friday as part of our History unit. The cost for this is $6.50 and will be included on your school fees. We will leave about 9.10am and arrive back about 11.40pm - Train helpers you can have the morning off!
Homework is going well - please remember this should always be supervised. Sight word practice and home reading also need an adult helper.
Children should well and truly be familiar with our before school sign on activities - parents should supervise but allow your child to read the question and work out what they are doing.
Thanks,
Melita, Tabitha and Liz
Year 1
Last week, our classrooms were ‘buzzing’ with a sense of community as we welcomed our Grandparents into our classrooms. With pride, students showed their Grandparents around the classroom, completed various activities, and read with them. Thank you to our Grandparents who came to celebrate Grandparents Day with us. It truly was a very special morning.
In English, we are enjoying studying the text 'Tom Tom'. Students have made text to self-connections and have compared Tom Tom's preschool days with their own preschool days and wrote about it. Students enjoyed going down 'memory lane' - remembering what they did at preschool. This week, we have been using words from the text to learn about syllables and to learn that every syllable must contain a vowel. We have been clapping out syllables to help us learn.
In Maths this week, we are learning to recognise and classify familiar two-dimensional shapes using obvious features.
In Religion, we are learning about the Sacrament of Baptism and the important symbols used during this celebration. We will discuss the Sacrament of the Eucharist next.
Thank you for supporting your children at home with their homework and their reading. Please remember to practise rainbow facts and doubles.
Have a great week.
Jen and Ange
Year 2
Last week we celebrated Catholic Education Week, where we as teachers reflected upon what it means to teach in a Catholic school, and what makes it such a special place. Our students amaze us every day, of how they treat one another with such kindness. We feel truly blessed to work in such a caring community.
Thanks to the wonderful grandparents who joined us for a lovely morning last week, sharing with us some interesting information about the olden days. We learnt so much and enjoyed chatting about what life was like during their childhood. The year 2s enjoyed creating some very realistic portraits of their grandparents!!
Over the last few weeks in English we have been enjoying learning about different styles of poetry. We have explored poetic devices such as rhyming patterns and repetition and have discovered some poems that do not rhyme, using short phrases and beautiful words to tell a story or to describe something.
In Hass we are learning about ‘Then and Now’. We have been busy discovering how our everyday items have changed over time. We will learn so much more next Thursday the 11th of August, when we go on our excursion to Crows Nest Historical Museum. Thanks for the prompt return of permission notes. We will be departing at around 9am and heading straight to Peacehaven Park. If you are coming along for the day you can either meet us at the park, or at the museum at around 11am.
In Maths we are becoming experts at representing multiplication in different ways, as well as learning about Mass and Volume. We are also having fun exploring numbers up to 1000 and beyond.
In Religion we have been discussing people from the Old Testament such as Abraham, Moses and Noah, who said yes to God. We are also exploring the meaning of the word Covenant.
2V are collecting small plastic lids of any colour, such as laundry detergent, or milk bottles. We will be drilling holes in them for threading. Please also send in anything else for threading such as beads, paper clips, curtain rings, metal or plastic bits and pieces that have holes in them. Please send in as many as you can find over the coming weeks. Thanks for your wonderful support!
Year 2 Team

Year 3
Thank you to all who were able to attend Grandparent’s Day last Wednesday – the students had a great morning and loved sharing with you. Well done to the Year 3 students on their wonderful work leading the liturgy. Next Monday, we will be attending a prayer to celebrate the Feast of St Mary MacKillop and look forward to learning more about her.
On Thursday 25th August, our annual Readers Cup will be held. This day is also our Book Week dress up day – the theme this year is Dreaming with Eyes Open. Further information can be found in the Library section of the newsletter.
Today, the students enjoyed a virtual author visit with Sue DeGennaro (author of Missing Marvin, The Pros and Cons of Being a Frog amongst others). We enjoyed hearing Sue talk about her work and writing process and we thank Mrs Leathart for organising the visit.
This week, we have started researching an animal in English. Students are looking forward to using their learning to write and create a PowerPoint on their chosen animal. In Maths, we have been investigating measurement – mass, capacity and length – and have enjoyed experimenting with different measurement tools. In Science, we have been looking at observable features of animals and healthy habits in Health. In Religion we are continuing to learn about the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Have a great week,
Angela, Sarah, Demi and Janice
Year 4
Welcome to Week 4. Children are very much engaged in History this term learning about the First Fleet and our early convict stories. In Science, the children have been learning about Forces in particular Gravity and Friction. In English, we are discussing and learning about Historical Recounts. The children towards the end of term will be required to create their own recount on a child on the First Fleet and orally present their recount to the class. In Maths, children have been learning about decimals and angles. Homework began last week, and students are reminded to manage their available time at home, to ensure that it is completed by the due date, in their classroom.
Thank you to all the Grandparents that came to the Grandparents prayer and joined the children in their classrooms. We hope that they enjoyed spending time with their Grandchildren and enjoyed being able to discuss and see the children’s work. The children were very keen to share their work throughout the year and we like to thank Mrs Moore for organising this event.
We would also like to congratulate Dallas Etheridge on undertaking the 'Sleepout' on Monday night to raise money for The Basement Soup Kitchen which actively supports the homeless community. We are incredibly proud of Dallis and his willingness to be a Lourdes Global Citizen - who thinks of others rather than himself. Thank you to all the students who supported Dallis and donated money towards this cause.
We will be having a Year 4 Liturgy on Friday the 12th of August commencing at 2.00pm, to showcase our dancing with Mrs Fisher. All parents are welcome to join us in the hall.
Readers Cup will held on August the 25th- this is also a dress up day with the theme of ‘Dreaming with eyes open’. Further information can be found in the library section of the newsletter.
On Wednesday this week, the children enjoyed a Virtual Author Visit. Sue DeGennaro is our Author and has written several children’s books including The Pros and Cons of Being a Frog, Missing Marvin and We’re Stuck. Thank you to Mrs Leathart for organising this event.
Have a wonderful two weeks everyone!
Suzanne, Toni and Garry
Year 5
We are continuing to work hard in our learning. We love the students' approach to pre and post testing in Maths, and they are using this to track and inform their learning. In English, we are working on developing our understanding and purpose of writing informative texts. Additionally, students are refining their research and note taking skills which are essential skills across all subject areas now and in the future. Last week, we started our next impact cycle for Maths which will focus on converting 12 and 24 hour time and in the coming weeks we will move to planning simple budgets. Students will be linking their budget with HASS to plan an overseas trip.
The Lourdes spirit was alive and well at the Touch and Netball Carnival last week. It was wonderful to see students cheering each other on and tackling new challenges, especially for those who had never played these games before. It was evident that all students are aware of our focus on being a global citizen, cheering each other on, making friends with others from schools across the diocese and always being respectful to others. You should be very proud parents right now.
This Thursday, 5M will present their prayer at assembly, parents are more than welcome to attend.
A few reminders, Book Week is in Week 7 with the theme Dreaming with Eyes Open, don’t forget to have your costume ready for Thursday 25th August for Readers Cup.
Another important note, please ensure your child is arriving at school on time, the school day starts at 8:25am. Every minute counts! We are noticing a trend of students arriving late which affects notices and the beginning of learning sessions.
Have a great week!
Tim, Jess and Emily
Year 6
During week three, we definitely celebrated Catholic Education Week and lived out the theme “Communities of faith, hope and love”. What an extremely special morning we had celebrating with our grandparents (or our friend’s grandparents) during the grandparents’ assembly, followed by showing them through our spectacular classrooms on the Wednesday. On Thursday we powered up and headed off to participate in the Catholic Netball and Touch Football carnivals. All our teams competed with the mighty Lourdes’ spirit. Our senior netball girls played out of their skins and were victorious winners of their division. Our senior touch footy boys made it to the grandfinal but were pipped at the post during the drop-off stage. On Friday, all the students would have spent the day moping around the house, wishing that they were at school. Ha!
Homework
Please ensure that you check that your child’s homework is completed to a high standard before signing-off each week. Maths Online, Reading Eggs and written workbook are all due each Friday until the end of Week 9.
Friday Sport
Hopefully the weather will be kind and the students will have the opportunity to play interschool sport this week. Please ensure all necessary uniforms and equipment come to school.
Catholic Carnival
Well done to all involved and special thanks to parents and guardians who helped out on the day or came and supported with pride.

Drama
Drama Performances
With many interruptions to classroom space due to our current building project we are unfortunately unable to hold our Speaking Festival as normal this year. Despite this, it is wonderful that we can still celebrate our top performers as they share their poem on stage, with the wider school as an audience, at our assembly gatherings this term!
We congratulate the following Year 3 and 4 students on their fabulous achievement in being selected to showcase their speaking pieces this term. Parents of these students have been notified by classroom teachers about when they will perform at assembly. Thank you also to these students who have continued to rehearse their piece at Drama Club with Mrs Holzheimer each Wednesday lunch time.
We hope you are able to join us at assembly to enjoy watching some of our budding stars!

Italian
Buongiorno a tutti! This term the year 4’s will be offered an introduction to Italian. They will learn to introduce themselves and greet others in Italian. They will learn how to count to ten and name family members. During lessons we will also locate Italy on a map, name famous landmarks and explore features of the Italian culture.
Art
Prep: This term the Preps have continued to explore different drawing, painting, and collage techniques to create art works that reinforce their letter of the week. So far, we have collaged the Aboriginal flag for NAIDOC week celebrations, painted a lion’s face, twisted crepe paper for jelly fishes’ legs and this week we will use a straw blowing technique to paint the blowhole of a whale.
Year 1: Year 1 began the term with a spray bottle handprints picture to celebrate NAIDOC week. They then began work on a sunset image with silhouetted boats. The students worked hard to blend colours to create a pleasing graduation of colour. This week we will begin work on a portrait of St. Mary Mackillop to celebrate her feast day on the 8th of August. The portraits will be inspired after viewing several portraits of St Mary MacKillop by other artists.
Year 2: Year 2 celebrated NAIDOC week in week 1 by painting patterns onto garden rocks using stick and dot technique. Our next project of a bee, involved several techniques, including printing, shading and collage. This week we will begin work on a portrait of St. Mary Mackillop to celebrate her feast day on the 8th of August. The portraits will be inspired after viewing several portraits of St Mary MacKillop by other artists.
Year 3: Year 3 have recommenced specialist art classes this term. Due to the pupil free day, we began lessons in week 2. Our first project was to create flowers with our fingerprints to make bookmarks for Grandparents Day. This week we completed a painting of an owl in a forest, it involved several different painting techniques and collage.

What is dyslexia?
This week we the information is on a specific learning disorder with impairment in reading (dyslexia). Once again, this information comes from AUSPELD: A Guide for Parents (2018). Over the rest of this term we will further information about other specific learning disorders will be provided.
A specific learning disorder with impairment in reading (dyslexia) is the most common form of learning disability, accounting for 80% of all children identified. Problems with reading, and related difficulties in comprehension, spelling and writing are common for these children. Many people who have a specific learning disorder with impairment in reading (dyslexia) also experience difficulties with working memory, attention and organisational skills.
Dyslexia can be defined as:
- … a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin
- It is characterised by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction.
Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.*
When looking at identifying a specific learning disorder with impairment in reading (dyslexia), deficits in one or both of the following key academic areas are usually present:
- Inaccurate or slow and effortful word reading (e.g., reads single words aloud incorrectly or slowly and hesitantly, frequently guesses words, has difficulty sounding out words).
- Difficulty understanding the meaning of what is read (e.g., may read text accurately but not understand the sequence, relationships, inferences, or deeper meanings of what is read).
*This definition is the preferred definition of DSF and AUSPELD, as well as the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) and the National
Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).
Children who have a specific learning disorder with impairment in reading (dyslexia) will show some or many of the difficulties listed below. They may not display all of these characteristics.
Hopefully this has provided some useful information and made the topic of dyslexia clearer.

Just as with any other classes, swimming is part of the curriculum and children are expected to participate unless a note of explanation is provided. Participation in this program is highly recommended, for the students in grades 5 & 6, as many of the activities on camp are water-based.
A massive thank you to the P & F for their generous donation, helping to keep swimming lessons affordable for all.
Parents are welcome to attend the lessons at Glennie. However, we would like to ask that all parents refrain from interacting with their children during lessons. It is important that the children are focused on their instructor and what they need to do in the pool. We appreciate your support with this.

PJ Day
Thank you for your support of PJ Day on July 21. We certainly chose a good day to be all rugged up in our PJ's. We raised a total of $516.05 to support children in Foster Care. Special mention to Year 5P who focused their prayer assembly time on explaining exactly what PJ day is all about for our Lourdes Learners. We were certainly Thinking Globally and Acting Locally on PJ Day. Every action, no matter how small it may seem, has the power to make a difference in the lives of others.
Step into Stories Author Visit with Mark Wilson
On Tuesday 2nd August the Year 5 and 6 students met virtually with Australian Author, Illustrator Mark Wilson. He spoke passionately about the environment, animals and the power that lies in each and every one of us to make a difference. It may seem small, insignificant or like it might not matter but all action is important. My three key takeaways were:
- To be an author you need to READ, READ, READ.
- To be an author you need to WRITE, WRITE, WRITE. ✍ Your first draft is the WORST draft.
- The best stories are ones that can make people cry.

From The Garden - The Garden Crew
Would you believe the Garden Crew only have 4 weeks until the judging of their garden for the Carnival of Flowers. They have been busy pruning, weeding, potting up seedlings and bulbs, and of course watering. It is a very exciting time of the year for them.
Our lunchtime Garden Club kids have been busy potting up seedlings for the school grounds too, as well as maintaining their little veggie gardens.
A big thankyou to True Blue Garden Centre, and Highfields Nursery, for their donation of pots, and a very much belated thankyou to Sarah Trenaman for her kind donation of a Chocolate Blob Sedum (it is doing very well).
Spring in Toowoomba is such a wonderful time of the year. We already have birds nesting in the grounds, and the huge amounts of different species that visit due to our seed bowls and plant life is just so rewarding.
Thank you to those of you who have also donated pots, it is very much appreciated.
(The little jelly ball on Levi's finger is a sail egg.....very exciting).

TCKC - Outside School Hours Care
We are so excited to be back into the swing of things for Term 3, 2022. Over the first 2 weeks of the term, we have explored some new and exciting themes. For Week 1, we explored the theme “All Our Favourites”. This aligned with the activities we completed over the 2 weeks of Winter Vacation Care, that appeared to be highly popular amongst the students. During Week 2, we explored the theme “Space Week”, this proved to be very popular - an exciting and different theme, to what we have experienced at OSHC before.
WEEK 1 – “ALL OUR FAVOURITES”
During this week, students and educators assessed our Winter Vacation Care program. We identified the activities that were popular, and then incorporated them into the first week of Term 3 for all students to enjoy again. Some of the activities included: Superhero Tag (from a very exciting and interesting Superhero Day), Pokémon themed colouring in competitions as well as some fun interactive arts and crafts. We also touched on our “High Five Hand”. This is a method we use to encourage students to resolve any conflicts amongst their friends or peers, before coming to find an educator.
WEEK 2 – “SPACE WEEK”
During this week, we had lots of fun with exciting arts and craft activities created relating to our theme “Space”. OSHC students have created their own spaceship using paint, their hand prints and coloured paper. We have also made aliens using paper plates, paint or coloured textas. Some of our artworks are hanging up on the back of our “Welcome to OSHC” whiteboard, so feel free to stop by the hall and see what marvellous artworks have been created.
OSHC STAFF
For those who don't know us, we would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves to the OLOL families. We have Miss Alannah who is our Coordinator (she will be able to assist with any questions, new enrolments etc), Miss Mackenzie who is our Assistant Educator and then Miss Emily and Miss Ella who are our Educators. We have recently welcomed Mrs Otto onto the team to assist a couple afternoons a week. We had Miss Lyndsay start with us this week for After School Care. Miss Lyndsay has assisted us through Vacation Care, and is now excited to join us for After School Care a few afternoons a week.
LOST PROPERTY
We have a box in the hall for any OSHC lost property items, this also accumulates any other lost property that has been left in the hall during the school day. It has recently been emptied into the main school lost property outside the library. Please feel free to have a look through to find any items that your child may be missing.
