Dear Parents & Carers
Hard to believe isn’t it that we have reached the end of another school year. You just have to take a little time to wander around the school to see how well the students have progressed over a relatively short period of time. Our Preppies are confident and raring to go for Year One and of course our Year 6’s most of who are slightly taller, a little anxious yet more than ready for the challenges of high school.
Upon reading report card comments it is most rewarding to read how children have improved and developing into more responsible learners. It is now time though, to have a well-deserved break. A rest from the day-to-day routines and the daily challenges of academic endeavour and handling the various ups and downs of school life is definitely needed.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere appreciation once again to our teachers and support staff for the supreme effort you all put into making OLOL a very special place. The ongoing success of the school can be contributed to the team approach and your willingness to do that little extra for the students under your care. Thank you.
Thank you as well to all our parents for your continued support of our school. The building and maintaining of positive relationships with the teachers makes a big difference. We really do appreciate all the assistance and look forward to renewing the strong partnership in 2022.
A special mention must go out to all the families who sadly end their time at OLOL with the departure of their youngest child in Year 6. Over the years many of you have been ardent supporters of the school and have effectively contributed to the building of a strong and positive school culture. For that I am most grateful and hope you leave us with many treasured memories.
To Fr. Quinlan and the parish community, your ongoing support and guidance has again been well received. The strong relationship which exists between the school and parish also contributes to the ongoing success of both communities. Thank you.
Final Assembly
A reminder that our final assembly for the year will be held at the St. Ursula’s Salo Centre next Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. All family and friends are most welcome to attend. We are combining the final assembly with the end of year thanksgiving Mass which usually is held on the last day of school. Consequently, the final assembly will be our last formal gathering as a school for the year. At the final assembly we will acknowledge the time spent at OLOL by our departing Year 6 students. This year’s academic awards will also be presented as well as the announcement of our school leaders for 2022.
Year 6 Graduation Mass
We will have another opportunity to recognise the achievements of all students in Year 6 at our annual Graduation Masses which will be held Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. These are always very special occasions, marking the end of their primary schooling and enabling their families and staff to congratulate them on their many achievements during their time here at Lourdes.
Tuckshop
I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Mrs. Teagan Harch and all who have assisted with the tuckshop throughout the year. Thank you for all the hard work you have put in and working around the disruption caused by the building project.
Outstanding School Fees – URGENT
It is most important that your prompt attention to ensure all outstanding school fee invoices are paid by the end of school term. This is an extremely busy time of year and chasing up overdue accounts draws precious time and effort away from other school initiatives and activities. The school too, has many financial commitments to fulfill by the end of the year and over the school holidays. Your support in paying your fees and levies in full will greatly assist the school to continue to provide and upgrade school and classroom resources.
A reminder that family school fee statements will be emailed to families on a quarterly basis. We have once again strived to keep our fees and levies to an absolute minimum in 2022 with a marginal increase of 3.5%.
2022 school fees and levies are attached in the PDF below.
2022 Booklists
A hard copy of next year’s booklists will be distributed to families next week. Alternatively, you can use this link Browns Office Choice: School Booklists (brownsstationery.com.au) to gain access to your child’s booklist. Once again, Browns Bookstore is providing a great service to the families of OLOL. Please ensure that you utilize this service. Not only does it take the headache out of shopping around for individual items, but it ensures all children in a particular year level have exactly what is needed for the new school year. Students who do not have the necessary items or bring along different books, stationery etc., places the student at a disadvantage and can prove very frustrating for teachers.
Books & Stationary Drop Off
On Thursday 20th January, parents are invited to drop book list items off if they wish to their children’s classrooms from 2:00pm – 3:30pm. Due to the amount of professional development sessions during the pupil free days, this will be the only time available for parents to drop off these items prior to the commencement of the 2022 school year on Tuesday 25th January.
Uniform
Another reminder to please consult the school’s uniform policy prior to purchasing any new items over the upcoming holidays, especially joggers for which are to be worn on Phys. Ed. Days and every Friday. The policy can be found in the school calendar and on the website. Please pay particular attention to... fluro shoes or laces which are not permitted.
A reminder that the official school hat is to be purchased from the school (via Flexischools)
Your assistance and co-operation in abiding by school rules and policies will be greatly appreciated.
School Admin Hours
The school’s office will close from the 22ndDecember 2021 and reopen on the 5th January 2022.
Farewell
Next week sadly sees the end of an era here at OLOL with the retirement of two long serving and dedicated teachers – Mrs. Christine Fisher and Mr. Damian Mollison. Mrs. Fisher commenced teaching in 1977 at the tender age of 20 at Moorooka State School in Brisbane. Her career spanned across many schools including Hughenden, Mossman and Brisbane before finding her home here at Our lady of Lourdes in 2002. Mr. Mollison began his teaching career in 1980 at Nudgee College. After serving at Holy Name, St. Anthony’s and Maria Goretti Inglewood before arriving at OLOL in 2003. On behalf of the Lourdes school community I extend our sincerest gratitude to Christine and Damian for the enormous contribution they both have made towards teaching and learning standards and the ongoing growth and success of the school. I wish them all the very best for the years ahead.
We also bid a sad farewell to Miss Michelle Drebing. Even though Mis Drebing has only been here this semester, I need to congratulate Michelle on her dedicated approach during her time teaching Year 3. Michelle will be missed by the students and staff and I wish her the very best for the future.
Welcome
With any sad farewells there is always a heartfelt welcome extended to new staff. Miss Emily Perry who is currently principal of St. Patrick’s School in Mitchell will be joining our team in 2022. Miss Perry is an excellent teacher with teaching experience at Cunnamulla, Clifton and Mitchell. Emily is very excited about teaching here at Lourdes and being a little bit closer to the coast!
I also extend a warm welcome to Mrs. Tabitha Lloyd-Jones who will be team teaching with Mrs. Wagner in Prep next year. Mrs. Lloyd-Jones is an outstanding educator and loves teaching Prep. Tab has extensive experience in early years education and joins us after 10 years’ service at Mater Dei.
Class Placements 2022
Classes for 2022 are completed. All families will be notified via email of which class their child is in during the last week of term. Placement of students in classes involves input from their current teachers, Learning Support Teachers and School Leadership Team members. A number of considerations are taken into account, the main one being each child’s individual learning needs. Other factors include a balance in each class in the number of boys and girls, number of students requiring additional support, friendship groups and best fit for positive relationships within the classroom.

Another incredible year has just flown by! With so much happening over and above the usual routines of running a school, including the Principal going on leave in Term 3, relocating offices and classrooms, planning for the knockdown and construction of new buildings, undergoing new pickup and drop-off routines, and preparing for potential Covid lockdowns; it has certainly been a year to appreciate the amazing accomplishments of our staff and parents who have helped us along the way. Team work and assisting each other in ensuring our community stays connected and positive for our students have been a credit to everyone.
Throughout it all, our teachers and support staff have done a tremendous job maintaining high expectations for teaching and learning and caring for each individual student in our wonderful school. I commend all our teachers for their work in not only delivering the content of the curriculum, but also in going above and beyond to support different initiatives within the school, including Tech Time, Chess and Sports Coaching. Importantly, our staff have also been developing the traits of a Lourdes Learner and global citizen to ensure our students reach their potential and thrive in our complex and ever-changing world.
We believe it is essential for students to see themselves as learners as this contributes greatly to their success. Research shows that the belief a child has about themselves and their abilities, contributes more to their success than their actual capability. Like adults, children with higher levels of self-efficacy, (the beliefs they hold about their capabilities) are far more likely to learn and continue to learn for life. They have a bank of strategies and dispositions they draw upon when they are challenged. They persist through the learning pit, self-regulate, think about their thinking, plan steps to meet learning goals, know how and when to ask for help, and see themselves as learners. When it is tough and students don’t get the result they want or the right answer, they draw on other dispositions or strategies and try again.
As we finish the year and report cards are received, discussions at home about the learning journey, both in and out of the classroom, will be beneficial. Thinking about putting in best efforts to do even better next year will go a long way in supporting your child at school. At Lourdes, we aim for students with high levels of self-efficacy who take on challenges, do not give up easily, are engaged in the learning process and participate in discussions. These traits contribute to being a Lourdes Learner.
Report cards this semester will be emailed home instead of printed. Please read the previous two newsletters for explanations and definitions of the grades and terminology on the report card.
I wish everyone a wonderful holiday. Enjoy the time with loved ones and may you all receive many Christmas blessings. Best wishes to all those families who are leaving Lourdes. I look forward to seeing everyone else in the new year.
Warm regards,
Miranda

A big thank you to those who have already thoughtfully donated.
Our classes will be holding End of Year prayer celebrations – Please keep an eye out for classroom information on dates and times over this next week.

Prep
We are nearly at the end of Prep and what a great year it has been. At this time of year it is lovely to reflect on the progress of each child, both socially and academically. It is also a little sad as we farewell our Prep friends to Year 1. Yesterday, the Preps spent the morning in the Year 1 classrooms for Step Up Day. They had a great time and showed us they are more than ready for the new challenges that lie ahead.
A few reminders for the following week:
Tuesday – Final school Mass at Salo Centre, St Ursulas College.
Thursday – Gymnastics Excursion
Friday – Bowling Excursion and Final Liturgy – Laurel Bank Park.
Finally, thanks to all parents for your support and generosity throughout the year. The partnership between school and home is of utmost importance and helps set your child up for success. It has been a pleasure watching your children grow and blossom into Lourdes Learners. Merry Christmas and have a safe holiday.
Liz and Melita
Year 1
Although the end of the school year is near, we are keeping busy and having fun learning about Christmas Symbols and being creative in Santa’s Workshop.
Students are working well on their METS by designing and creating a new street landscape for Santa, after an avalanche destroyed some homes in ‘Elfville’.
We are busy practicing for our Christmas liturgy, ready to present Monday 29th December at 9am in the church. No costumes are required. We hope to see everyone there. After our liturgy, we will walk down to Newtown Park for a shared morning tea and a play. Could all students bring a small plate of food to share.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our Grade 1 parents for the wonderful support and patience given to us and to your children throughout the year. We have thoroughly enjoyed teaching your children and they have all made great progress. Remember to remind your child to keep reading in the holidays as a few weeks without reading can have a big impact on reading ability and comprehension.

Year 2
In Year 2 this week we are all starting to wind down and enjoy some Christmas activities. We are exploring some different versions of the Christmas Nativity story and creating some beautiful Christmas decorations.
Next Tuesday we head down to the Salo Centre at St Ursula’s for our final assembly where we will farewell our Year 6 classes.
On Wednesday we have our excursion to The Strand Cinema. Students may wear their full summer uniform. It is going to be so exciting!
On Thursday we have our trip to Allstars Gymnastics. It is very important that every child bring a water bottle for this activity. Students may wear their sports uniform on the day.
From all of us in Year 2 we would like to thank all of our families for your support and encouragement this year. It has been a privilege working with your beautiful children and we have all thoroughly enjoyed the year!
Merry Christmas and have a safe a happy holiday!
Warm Regards

We enjoyed our end-of-year liturgy yesterday – it was great to gather as a group and reflect on our great year. Next Tuesday, we will celebrate as a school at the final assembly – we will walk to the Salo Centre at St Ursula’s for an 11am start. On Wednesday, we will attend the swimming carnival at Glennie – please refer to the PE section of the newsletter for all the details.

Year 4
Welcome to the final couple weeks of Year 4 for your students! Where has the year gone? Report cards are being finalised by all teachers and they will be emailed home towards the end of next week. Notification of classes and teachers for next year will also occur next week.
It was lovely to see so many parents at our End of Year Liturgy this morning. We appreciate you taking the time to celebrate with us, for the final time this year. We would like to thank everyone that has returned their Gala Day note and encourage those that haven’t done so, to reply asap. On Friday, we are heading out to Kearney Springs to play soccer against other Year 4 students. Please be at school on time and remember to bring extra food for energy throughout the day. As per the email sent last week, students in Year 4 can still order for Pizza Day and we will collect it when we return to school.
Secret Santa presents are due soon in most classrooms, culminating in a day of fun and merriment in the last week. Please check and confirm details with your class teacher. Just a reminder that we have the final school assembly next Tuesday at 11am at the St Ursula’s Salo Centre. The annual school Swimming Carnival will be on next Wednesday at the Glennie Swimming Pool. Next Friday, on the last day of school, students are able to go home at lunchtime, at the discretion of each family.
On behalf of Garry, Suzanne and Toni, we would like to thank you for your support throughout the year and we sincerely wish you all the best for a safe, peaceful Holy Season and may you enjoy the time with family and friends without the busyness of school life. God Bless
Suzanne, Toni and Garry
Year 5
Well, it’s week 8 and we are almost at the end of 2021 and what a year it’s been! The children have been able to list many highlights and are certainly looking forward to stepping up to be the leaders of the school in 2022.
Leadership speeches were last week, and we can honestly say that we were so proud of every one of them. As we know there are only 10 positions, but each student should not forget the significant role they play in the life of our school.
Thank you to the volunteers that have helped our classes this year, especially at our Father's Day Stall – we hope that you enjoyed last weeks Volunteers’ Morning tea, and to those who couldn’t make it, please accept our sincere thanks.
We are running a Secret Santa this year across the whole Year 5 cohort and gifts are due by Monday week 9 – please let your teacher know if you will have difficulty being involved in this.
Date Reminders
30th November – Whole School and Yr 6 Final Assembly – Salo Centre St. Ursula’s at 11am. (The 2022 school leaders will be announced at this assembly. 1st December – Swimming Carnival at Glennie Aquatic Centre (Please see PE section for further details).
2nd December – Year 5 end of year celebration at 1.00pm at Newtown Park

German
This week will be our last German lesson for the year. The students will be hearing about some of the Christmas customs in Germany and doing some Christmas colouring. The students have worked very well this year and I have been very pleased with their interest and questions during our lessons.

Welcome to Week 8 from The Hive. Last week’s topic was helping parents and children to identify and manage social anxiety. This week is about how to build resilient children.
Building Resilience in Children
What is resilience?
You may have heard the term before, but what exactly is resilience? People often describe it as the ability to ‘bounce back’ from negative experiences. This means when your children make a mistake or experience a set-back they are able to brush it off relatively easily.
Some children naturally develop resilience but others may struggle to deal with challenges in life.
It’s important to learn how to be resilient because life is tough and we need to know how to cope when difficult situations crop up! The good news is that resilience can be learnt!
Why is resilience important?
Building resilience helps your child to deal with the challenges they have when they’re young. It also provides a foundation for dealing with hardships they may face as teenagers and adults.
Children with higher resilience are more likely to:
- Manage stress and difficult emotions
- Thrive at school and at work later in life
- Have good psychological health
- See mistakes as an opportunity to learn
- Have well developed coping skills
- Have healthy relationships with others
Keys to resilience
These are some key areas in which you can help your child develop so they can become more resilient:
Feeling connected to something like a school or youth group
Having a sense of independence and responsibility
Confidence
Problem solving skills
Positive self-esteem
Having a positive outlook on life
Identifying, expressing and coping with feelings
Having good friendships with people who accept them for who they are
Having positive role models within the family, school or community
Experiencing love and acceptance from a parent/carer
Some children are naturally resilient. They’re able to easily manage disappointments and struggles. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for every child.
Here are some ways to help you build resilience in your children:
- Don’t get over involved - Many parents try to help their children with everything. Begin by letting them do things for themselves. Help less often with tasks but still check in and offer guidance. Provide your child with opportunities to make decisions about their environment, such as, which shoes they want to wear today.
- Be a great role model – Over-anxious parents can lead to over-anxious children. If you know yourself to be anxious, find ways to manage this, for example: take a break and relax, exercise regularly, eat balanced meals and get plenty of sleep. Keep in mind that children learn by observing.
- Talk about it - Let your child know that difficult times are a part of life and things will usually get better. Talk to them about how you or people you know have overcome challenges in life. Read and reflect on books that have storylines showing characters overcoming problems.
- Help your child manage big feelings - Let your child experience their emotions. Acknowledge how they feel and help your child learn to ‘self sooth’, for example: teach them a relaxation strategy, positive self-talk or to hug their favourite toy. Art and games of pretending are also good outlets for your child to work through fears and worries.
- Make time for yourself - Remember to put yourself first sometimes! This helps children build independence and understand they may need to find things to do other than play with you all day. It’s not selfish, it’s healthy for everyone.
- Learn to say ‘no’ - It’s okay to say no and put boundaries in place. Children who are taught boundaries early on will learn to manage expectations and accept that things don’t always go their way.
- Let them experience life - Instead of getting too involved, step back and let them resolve things themselves. They’ll find ways to negotiate and accept things in their own way.

The Carnival is for children in Grades 3-6 ONLY.

However, as they are not of appropriate age, they will not be eligible for age championship points. As with Cross Country and Athletics, there will not be an age championship for these students, nor will records be kept. They will simply be participating in this carnival to provide them with a valuable experience and to gain participation house points.
HOW TO NOMINATE
A Microsoft Form will be emailed to you to collect nominations. You will need to complete one form for each eligible child in Grade 3-6. It is expected that all children in Grades 3-6 nominate themselves for at least one event. Less confident swimmers will be able to use a noodle or kickboard if necessary. In this case it would be best for them to nominate for the 25m Freestyle. All nominations need to be in by Friday 26th November.

Christmas holiday borrowing will be available to families in Week 8 and 9. In 2021 we have decided that parents who borrow for holidays will be allowed to borrow 10 items per adult borrower and 6 per student borrower. Students will not be permitted to borrow without a parent. Merry Christmas!
Overdue Library Books
All Library Books were due back by FRIDAY 19th November 2021. Please ensure the remainder of outstanding loans are returned by 9am on Monday 29th November. All loans that are outstanding and unaccounted for on this day will be charged to school fees. Thank you for your understanding.
Summer Reading FUN
Summer holidays are full of fun, sun and adventure for many of us. We have all worked hard all year and now it’s time to relax. One thing to keep up over the summer break is reading to prevent the summer slide (where students lose some of the reading stamina they have worked so hard to build throughout the year). Here are some suggestions to help reduce the risk of summer slide in your family:
Read – everyday! Visit the town Library. Book swap with neighbours, cousins or friends. Reread old favourites together. Share a book from your childhood with your children. Read independently. Read aloud. Read anywhere.
- Reading Eggs is available all holidays. Your child should have a copy of their username and password in one of the books that comes home at the end of the year.
- Sunshine Online – a great resource (especially for out P – 2 readers). Username: lourdes2 Password: lourdes2. Download the APP for iPad or Tablet or use on a computer or laptop.
- Make time for smart play – word games, board games (like Monopoly, Scattegories, UpWords, Boggle, Scrabble) puzzles, crosswords can all help keep children’s minds active.
- Read for different purposes. Have your child/ren read the menu to you at the restaurant. Have them choose a recipe from a family recipe book for you to make. Follow directions to make some Christmas craft items.
- Set a good example. When children see family members enjoying reading, they learn that reading is important and valuable too.
- Try this Summer Reading Club | State Library of Queensland (slq.qld.gov.au) from the QLD Library. The challenge isn’t live just yet but it should be soon! I will update via the school Facebook page when it is working.
AccessIt – the Lourdes Library Catalogue (and more) ONLINE
Please take a moment to bookmark our Library page: https://au.accessit.online/ORL13/ and check out all the NEW links – just in time for the Christmas break. There is so much to do and read. There is even an Hour of Code activity to get children using block code!

The Garden Crew had another very successful plant stall last week, raising just over a thousand dollars. Thank you all so much again for your amazing support. If you don't want your plastic pots, please consider returning them to the potting table.
Have a wonderful Christmas everyone.
