Dear Parents & Carers
This week is NAPLAN week for our Grade 3 and 5 students. It is also the kick off whistle to the 2021 round of the ongoing social and political debate on NAPLAN and in particular how NAPLAN scores are used to compare schools. Not sure if you keep up to date with the various media reports, but there was a good article last year in the Courier Mail regarding this issue. The main point of the article was the ridiculousness of comparing schools on data alone and that schools should be assessed on their level of value adding regardless the level of income, geographical position or flashy advertising.
NAPLAN does have purpose. Over time data from NAPLAN results informs schools on their particular strengths in numeracy and literacy and specific areas which may require additional focus. It of course is just one source for data informed teaching and learning but is the only form of testing that is conducted in all schools across the country at the same time. As a result, the data is used to compare schools and at times it can be a bit like comparing apples and oranges.
I have mentioned in previous newsletters about the importance of positive relationships that exist within schools. Do the teachers genuinely love working with young people and strive to assist them and provide them with every possible opportunity to do well? Are the teachers prepared to do that little bit extra and in most instances without financial reward? Does the school ethos promote this as well as placing high regard on academic success? Do the students enjoy their time at the school? Is there a range of opportunities for students? Is the environment of the school accepting of all who wish to attend or is inclusivity its primary role? None of the above can be measured and data collated into a pie graph, yet it is usually the things we can present as a number or a percentage that are highlighted, especially by the media.
We are all most proud of our efforts over a long period of time, but we need to be very careful in not allowing performance in a one off test become the be all and end all of our existence as a Catholic School. We have always and will continue to strive for excellence in our academic teaching and learning, however we will only continue to do so if we continue to strive to improve the abovementioned things.
Someone once wisely observed that the secret of education is to be found in respecting the student. In all our discussion on accountabilities and organisational structures, it is important to stop every now and again and focus on the core of our work which is the student and the ways in which their learning and can be genuinely improved.
The more time we spend in doing this we become more acutely aware of the context, characteristics, values, learning styles, interests and personal experiences of those we are called to teach. When this happens, we are in a position to raise the bar and genuinely improve the quality of the service we offer.
Winter Uniform
The warmer weather this week has not been helpful in regard to the recent changeover to the formal winter uniform. This I am sure will be only short term, with the predicted cooler change occurring tomorrow. The classrooms are climate controlled, so comfort levels are assured. Please do not mix and match summer and winter uniform items on warmer days.
To assist families with the current shortage of winter uniform items, flexibility with the wearing of the formal winter uniform will be extended to the end of the month. If you do not have the full complement of formal winter uniform items, please continue wearing summer uniform with school jumpers on the cooler days. This of course only applies to those students who do not have the complete formal uniform items.
A reminder that the girls have only two options when wearing the formal winter uniform – navy blue tights or long navy blue socks. Boys also have two options – long navy blue slacks (not tracksuit pants) or their usual navy blue dress shorts with long navy blue socks.
School Fees
Term 2 school fee invoices will be forwarded to all families via email by Friday afternoon. Please check your emails, including spam emails for this email from the school. Your prompt payment of these fees will be greatly appreciated.
Communication
Regular and timely communication between school and home is vital. It is one thing that communication is sent but it is another thing for people to take time to read the communique whether it is an email, newsletter, School App or hard copy. All classroom communication is sent via email or hard copy and reminders are included in the fortnightly classroom newsletter item. We do ask however, that communication sent from home to school, especially urgent information about a change to routine is sent at an appropriate time. Classroom teachers on most days do not have time to check emails once classes have commenced. Informing teachers of any changes to the daily routine should occur as early in the morning as possible and to be on the safe side, cc the school admin as well – lourdes@twb.catholic.edu.au to ensure the information has been received and actioned.
Afterschool Routine
Just a reminder that the only supervised areas of the school after school are at the Stop/Drop & Go zones on Ascot St and in the Church carpark from 3:00 – 3:30 p.m. Students may play on the play forts after school but only if supervised by parents. For increased safety, please keep your kids within line of sight and remain on the play fort equipment as these are the areas that have soft fall material.
Mobile Phones
Not that we have experience any concerns but just a friendly reminder that all mobile phones and electronic devices must be handed in to the office upon arrival. They can then be collected from the office prior to leaving the school grounds. Permission from the teacher/s on duty is required prior to using the phone in any way whilst waiting to be picked up from school.
School Board
Members of the School Board met last night for the third time this year. Agenda items discussed included a quarterly financial report, school building project update, 2022 enrolments, future purchase of house properties as part of our progression of the master plan, and school uniform supply issues. If you wish to find out more information about any of these topics, please feel free to come and see me or give me a call. 2022 School Board members are Maria Morcom, Kathryn Francisco, Geraldine Sevil, Brendan Carroll, Joe Kelly, Ray Bonell, Andy See, Blaise Shann, Melita Hohn, Emily McKay, Miranda Murray and myself.
P&F Meeting
A cordial invitation to extended to all who may be interested to attend our next P&F meeting which will be held next Tuesday 18th May at 6:30 p.m. in the staffroom.

NAPLAN
This week our Year 3 and Year 5 students are participating in The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) which is a nationwide exam for students in Year 3, 5, 7, and 9. NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that provides an opportunity for educators and parents to see how students are progressing in literacy and numeracy against the national standard and compares results with other students across Australia.
This year will be our first time partaking in NAPLAN online, except for the Year 3 Writing test. Year 3 and Year 5 will both do the Writing test on Tuesday 11 May, Reading and Conventions of Language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) on Wednesday 12 May and Numeracy on Thursday 13 May. There is an opportunity to make up tests if students are sick or away, but we only have a two-week timeframe to complete all tests.
The Learning Pit
Think back to a time when you have struggled to understand or solve a problem. It can seem like a mighty challenge where there is no light at the end of the tunnel! How resilient are we when this happens? Do we simply give up or do we use it as an opportunity to learn? These are the discussions we have with our Lourdes Learners.
We call the struggle in learning as ‘being in the learning pit.’ The Learning Pit was created by James Nottingham. When we are in the pit, we need a growth mindset and a belief in the power of YET. “I can’t do this...YET” “I don’t understand this...YET” “I am not good at this...YET” The small three letter word can help make the change from a fixed to a growth mindset. When we are in the pit, we need a positive mindset to keep persisting and seek strategies to help us get out of the pit.
Lourdes Learners are encouraged to think when they are in the pit - think about their mindset, think more deeply about the concepts, think about prior learning and make connections, are some ways learners are encouraged to persist out of the learning pit.
The next time you hear your child (or yourself!) struggling with their learning, remind them that they are in the pit and with persistence and grit, they will be able to make it out.
Writing Improvement
Literacy is the foundation of human communication and helps us make sense of the world, particularly oral and written forms. Just as we intend on developing confident communicators who can speak confidently to an audience, so too, we intend on developing effective writers who can impact a reader and thus, communicate as a learner and a global citizen.
‘Daily Writes’ is an effective teaching strategy which has been introduced to build writing fluency. Writing fluency refers to an ability to write with natural flow and organisation of ideas. Sometimes called Quick Writes or Stamina Writing, Daily Writes give students an opportunity to write without interruption and practise elements of the writing process, including planning, drafting, revising, proofreading and publishing. This builds students’ writing fluency.
To engage the writer’s imagination, teachers use a writing stimulus such as an image or a question prompt for students to write about. If you would like your child to practise writing so they can build their fluency, ask your child to write for a maximum of ten minutes using an image from a website, such as https://www.pobble365.com/.
To give feedback on their writing, it is worthwhile getting them to check whether they have the five essential elements of a sentence: 1. Start with a capital letter; 2. Include a subject (a noun or pronoun)- who or what is the sentence about? 3. Include a verb – what is the subject doing? 4. End with a punctuation mark (e.g. a full stop or question mark for a question) 5. Check it makes sense. You may also like to encourage the use of varying sentence types and ask them to read their writing aloud so they can hear and self- correct any errors which do not make sense or do not sound right.
Sentence Types
This week we focus on another sentence type that your child may like to incorporate into their writing to help impact their reader. Last term we looked at The Very Short Sentence and The Adverb Start.
A Preposition Start - This type of sentence starts with a preposition. Prepositions are little words showing movement or position. Examples of prepositions include in, by, after, during, under, over, from, behind, at, before, against, through, etc. By using a preposition or prepositional phrase before the subject, the author can add more pace. For example:
- In a flash, Mr Lee sped to the finish line.
- After a long while, Mr Golightly crossed the finish line.
- Out of nowhere, Mrs Lasserre suddenly started singing.
A preposition start can also add more detail to a sentence. For example:
- Throughout our Lourdes’ gardens, Mrs Broderick adds her magic to spruce up our school.
- Before going to Mr Franzmann for hilarious Health lessons, Mrs McKay makes marvellous art with her students.
When practising writing at home, encourage your child to have a go at using varying sentences. And remember, when struggling, we can continue out of the Learning Pit.
Thanks for reading.

Faith & Religious Education News
We celebrated our annual OLOL Mothers Day Mass last Wednesday. We hope all Mums, Grandmas, Nanas and special ladies, who are like Mothers to us, had a lovely day last Sunday.
Our Confirmation and First Eucharist candidates are soon to receive their sacraments. Confirmation is on Wednesday 19th May with 2 ceremonies – at 5:30pm and 7.00pm. We will have a short practice for Confirmation on Tuesday 18th May at 3:30pm in the church.
First Eucharist is at 11.00am on Sunday 23rd May (short practise on Thursday 20th 3:30pm in the church and Sunday 30th May at 3.30pm. (short practise on Wednesday 26th May at 3:30 pm) If you haven’t sent in your Confirmation time choice and First Eucharist date choice – please do so as soon as possible.
I’m also missing some Confirmation names and sponsors – Please let me know what they are as soon as possible – this information is important for the Parish Confirmation register.
Have a great week.
Janice
Prep
We hope you all enjoyed your Mother’s Day on Sunday and thankyou to the mums and special ladies that were able to attend the Prep morning.
With the cooler mornings now upon us please ensure that all items of clothing are clearly labelled so if they are misplaced they can be returned to their rightful owner.
Great progress has been made with students who consistently practise and reinforce the sight words learnt at school, at home. Remember to try and spot words in library books, home readers and other texts. Reading is about meaning and context. The more students see these words in text, greater connections and understandings are made. We are also concentrating on the reading strategy of Chunky Monkey. Looking for smaller words and word families in larger words helps decode. Don’t forget about the other strategies though, Lips the Fish, Stretchy Snake and Eagle Eyes.
Each week we are borrowing readers from the library. Please ensure these are read nightly. By the end of the week, students should be reading these books independently and fluently.
Revision is the key to success. Please remember to revise previously taught/learnt sight words, letters, sounds and numbers. This allows learning to move from short term memory to long term memory. Remember the more we practise the better we get.
In Maths we are concentrating on cementing our number knowledge to 10, including combinations of numbers to 10.
The prep program beings at 8:30am daily. This is an important part of our day, helping to establish routines and settle and prepare for the day. Students that are consistently late miss out on these learning opportunities and it can make settling into morning routines harder.
Children may appear more tired over the next few weeks as we return to full learning weeks at school. It is important students are maintain good routines and sleep patterns.
Have a great week,
Liz and Melita
Year 1
We hope all our wonderful Mother’s had a relaxing Mother’s Day on Sunday and felt very special.
Students enjoyed reading the story ‘There’s a Sea in my Bedroom’ and had a practice writing a literary retell, in English. This week, we will read the entertaining text, ‘Too Many Pears’ and will discuss the important events from the beginning, middle and end. Students will then write a literary retell independently for assessment.
In Maths, students will be learning about the features of our Australian coins and will continue to master their skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s using coins.
In Geography, we are learning about the natural, constructed and managed features of places and in Science we will observe the changes that are happening around us.
Jenny and Ange
Year 2
Welcome to Week 4! We hope that all our Mums had a lovely Mother’s Day on Sunday.
Last week we enjoyed listening to the highlights of our visit to Darling Downs Zoo! Some of us have learnt to never turn your back on an ostrich and that zebras can be very ungrateful when they bite the hand that feeds them! We had wonderful weather, beautiful behaviour and overall had a spectacular day.
This week in Maths we have begun focusing on analogue and digital time. If you would like to reinforce this at home we are concentrating on o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past. It can be challenging so any extra practise would be appreciated.
In English we continue our study of characters, learning to write detailed descriptions about their various attributes. We are enjoying reading traditional and fractured fairy tales. Don’t forget to start thinking of a costume for later in the term for our Mad Hatters tea party. It can be any fairy tale character! More information about what food to bring will follow shortly.
In Religion we are enjoying exploring some of the stories that tell us about who Jesus was. Next Thursday 2V will be presenting their assembly about this topic and you are all welcome to come along.
In Science we are focusing on gravity and the forces of push and pull and in Hass we are learning about how our world is divided.
Please remember to name all belongings, especially jumpers and hats. As always please contact us if you have any queries or concerns.
Dennielle, Allyson, Sarah, Aleisha and Megan
Year 3
This week we have been busy completing our NAPLAN testing – we will complete our final test, Numeracy, tomorrow morning. We have also been continuing learning about the power of the Sun in Science and finding out more on how our local community has changed over time in HASS. In Religion we have been exploring the role and the symbols associated with the Bishop and each Friday for the next few weeks, we will be training in various events for the upcoming athletics carnival.
We are excited about our trip to the Empire Theatre to see ‘The Midnight Gang’ next Tuesday – please return any outstanding permission forms as soon as possible.
Have a great week!
Angela, Sarah, Damian and Janice
Year 4
Welcome to Week 4 … already! We sincerely hope that all mothers had a lovely day last Sunday! There were some amazing gifts available at the Mother’s Day stall last Friday. Can you believe that next week is halfway through the Term? What a busy couple of weeks we have had – this is a tough week, being our first full week of teaching days. It has been lovely to see the students in their smart Winter formal uniform and with a few days last week, where we had a taste of Winter – it will be appreciated to have the warmer clothes! Please remember to label all items that may be removed during the day.
Homework is back up and running – please remember to read everyday and complete the Maths Online activities. Thank you to everyone that has returned their excursion notes – our trip to the Empire Theatre is next Tuesday! If you have not returned your note, please do so as soon as possible. We began our Athletics rotations last Friday with Mr Lee and Mr Dugdale and we will continue with Mrs Salisbury on the following Fridays, until our Athletics Carnival in Week 7.
We have been busy learning about lifecycles of plants and animals in Science and have enjoyed watching our bean seeds grow. In Maths, we have been learning about addition and subtraction algorithms, money and we will be investigating fractions and decimals before the end of the Term. In Religion we are writing Blessing Prayers, learning about the Sacraments of Healing and the parables, whilst practising our meditative prayer skills. The life of Aboriginal people before colonization is our focus in History.
Finally, we welcome Braxton back to Year 4 at Our Lady of Lourdes and hope that he is settling back into being a Lourdes Learner.
Suzanne, Toni and Garry
Year 5
Welcome to Week 4 and NAPLAN week for our Year 5 students. We have been so impressed with how the students have taken on this challenge, maintaining positive mindsets and displaying the Lourdes Learner mentality. Writing, Reading and Language conventions are done, just numeracy to go.
You would have received an email earlier this week outlining some changes to weekly homework that will start again in Week 5. Please read over this email and if you have any questions contact your class teacher.
Navigating technology and Office 365 continues to be an area of focus for our Year 5 students. Moving between Teams, OneNote and OneDrive is a skill and we are continually practicing to make this second nature. As always, we promote the use of Typing Tournament and typing in Word documents at home to support typing skills that are vital.
Currently in English we have been looking at main and subordinate clauses and how we can use these in our Narrative writing. Another focus area has been on different types of sentence starters. Stories that start with the or a noun every sentence become quite boring for an audience, so students are working towards using adverbs, prepositions, w starts and - ing starts.
In Maths we are finishing off our first cycle on graphing and interpreting data. Students have been creating side by side column graphs and interpreting line, dot and column graphs. We will use this knowledge again in Term 3 with budgeting. Next, we move our focus to geometry, measurement and grid referencing.
Have a great week
Tim, Jess and Emily
Year 6
Our trip to Parliament House and Old Government House on Monday was wonderful. We were lucky enough to conduct mock debates in the Lower House or Green Room. We enjoyed morning tea at Parliament House too! Old Government House was interesting – we loved the beautiful building and learning about the different innovations that have occurred since Old Government House was built. We also visited the Maze at the University and manipulated many confusing, yet entertaining puzzles. Thanks to Mrs Mills, Ms Murray and Mrs Kelly for accompanying us.
We hope all of our Mums, carers and guardians enjoyed their special day on Sunday.
Congratulations to Michael, Zeke, Eric, Lexie, Ella and Sapphira who competed in the Darling Downs Maths Challenge at St Ursula’s College. Our team were placed third after answering some very tough questions! Congratulations – a terrific achievement.
Congratulations to Addi and Georgia on their selection in the DD Hockey Team and to Hugo who has been selected in the DD Orienteering Team. Congratulations to Addi, Callum and Michael (shadow) on their selection in the West Zone cross country team – we wish them well at the DD Trials. Our Year 6 cohort are certainly a talented bunch – we’re fairly certain we’ve never had so many DD representatives from one year level in one year in the past at OLOL!
We are thoroughly entranced with our novel “Boy Overboard” at present – what a fantastic author Morris Gleitzman is – you could hear a pin drop in the Year 6 rooms whilst enjoying the journey of Jamal and his sister Bibi from Afghanistan to Australia. Students completed the orientation to a narrative last week also – we had some fabulous examples of different sentence starters and sizzling starts. Our editing skills are showing great improvement also.
We’re concentrating on multiplying and dividing by powers of ten over the next fortnight in Maths. Our Science “Chemical and Physical Changes” is loads of fun – student’s have been enjoying the hands-on activities. A reminder that there will be an assessment this Friday. We’re designing bumper stickers, during RE lessons, that show our understanding of different titles for Jesus.
Our sports leadership group from last term will lead a get active morning for our school next Wednesday 12 May from 7.40am until 8.15am. Students will need to arrive at school by 7.30am to assist in setting up.
Enjoy your week
Larry, Kylie and Shauna
German
We are continuing to work on clothing in German lessons and we will also be looking at houses, rooms and furniture over the next few weeks.

News from the Hub…
Last term we gave an overview of the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data process. The collection of data on School Students with Disability gives Australian schools, parents, guardians and carers, education authorities and the community information about the number of students with disability in schools and the adjustments they receive.
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- year of schooling
- category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
- level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
- formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
- consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
- develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).
Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au) and in the attached brochure.
If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.
Until next time….

Age-Group Divisions
All students will be issued with a colour-coded name sticker that states their name and year of birth. House marshals will provide students with their sticker when they check in on day 1 at O’Quinn Street. This will greatly assist staff in ensuring all students are where they should be at all times and competing in the right age group. Students compete in their age group not their class year. Please see below if you are unsure what age group your child falls into:

All students in grade 3, who are born in 2013, will participate in the 2012, or 9 year’s, category for field events – High Jump and Long Jump ONLY. However, as they are not of appropriate age, they will not participate in Discus and Shot Put, nor will they be eligible for age championship points. They will simply be participating in these events to provide them with a valuable experience and to gain participation house points.
Nominating for Events – Grade 3-6 Students
All students will be required to participate in their respective sprint (80 or 100m), 200m, Long Jump, High jump, Shot Put and Discus (Except 8-year-olds). They will be automatically entered into the program for these events.
The 800m is the only event that students will need to nominate for. This information will be collected from the students during their PE classes.
Points Allocation - Individual Age-Championship & House Points
The following points will be awarded to individual athletes and their respective houses according to the overall places that they obtain in each event. Heats will be run for all track events (in the 9-12 year’s category), except for the 800m. One participation point will go towards each students’ individual and house tally following these heats. Subsequently, finals will then take place to award the major individual age championship points and house points, as below. These points will also be awarded to all 9-12 year old’s for field events.
1st Place – 10 points (Blue Ribbon), 2nd Place – 6 points (Red Ribbon), 3rd Place – 4 Points (Green Ribbon), 4th Place – 2 Points (Yellow Ribbon) and 1 Point - 5th place onwards.
80m, 100m & 200m Final Qualifications
All 80m, 100m and 200m events will be timed and the fastest 8-9 runners will proceed to the final. All students will be required to remain at the finish line until all heats in their age group have been run. Finalists will then be named, and they will proceed directly to the track marshals to run their respective final.
High Jump – Fosbury Flop
As per risk assessment guidelines, only students that have obtained a certificate of competence will be allowed to perform the Fosbury Flop. If your child would like to be considered, please contact me on the details below prior to the carnival day.
Medal Presentations
No presentations will be held at the oval. A special assembly will be conducted to present all age champions from 2012-2009 and winning houses on Thursday 3rd June at 2:00pm. As with Swimming and cross country, medallions will be presented to age champions in the 9-12 years age category.
Catholic Carnival and West Zone Carnival Team Selection
Following the school athletics carnival, Our Lady of Lourdes will be selecting a team to represent the school at the Catholic Carnival and West Zone Carnival. Only students born 2009-2012 are eligible for team selection. OLOL are limited to the following numbers of entries in both carnivals:
80/100 & 200m |
3 students per age group |
800m |
2 students per age group |
Field events |
2 students per age group. |
Note: Only students born 2009-2011 are eligible to participate in the Shot Put and the Discus at zone level.
Students born 2016-2013 are also offered the opportunity to participate in the track events at the Catholic Athletics Carnival. The top 3 runners in each age group will be selected.
More information regarding the school athletics team will be made available at a later date.
Absence from the school carnival
If your child is unable to attend one or both days of the school athletics carnival, and they would like to be considered for the school team, please contact me on the details below. The school will grant exemptions on the same grounds as Darling Downs School Sport. These grounds for exemption are as follows:
- Medical condition on the day of the carnival & they have a medical certificate.
- Attending another Zone, Toowoomba, Darling Downs, Queensland School Sport or School Sport Australia Championships or equivalent in community sports.
- Bereavement or compassionate reasons
If one or more of these conditions have been met, the school will organize to record times and distances for the affected student, preferably prior to the carnival, as a means of team selection. It is important to note that these times and distances will only be considered for placement in the school team, and not to go towards Age Championship Points. To be awarded age champion the student must attend the school carnival. Please contact me if you require further clarification.
House Colour Dress
Students required to wear their house colours on the day. Please be mindful when choosing your clothing for the day. It is important that what you wear does not restrict your movement and is appropriate for competing in.
Canteen
To be confirmed.
Helpers/Volunteers

Mother Day Stall
On behalf of Year One, thank you to our wonderful school community for the overwhelming donations for this year’s Mother’s Day Stall. The stall was well supported by all students and families. Without these donations, the stall wouldn’t have been so successful. We are so lucky to have such a supportive school community. I’m sure our OLOL mums got a lovely surprise on Sunday morning. From all reports, the stall ran smoothly, thanks to our Grade 1 parent helpers, for setting up and running the stall on the day. Also, a massive thank you to Mrs Broderick, Mrs Kelly, Miss Twidale and Tim, Tyler and Darius (Grade 5 students) for their donations of plants and the proceeds from their plant stall last Wednesday.
Once again the boys garden stall was a huge success last week, with $400 being raised to go towards supplies for grade 1. It really thrills me to have the children so interested in what we are growing and wanting to be a part of it all. A big thank you once again to Mrs Fisher for her enormous cacti and succulent donation, and to True Blue Nursery, for their generous donation of pots.
If you have time this week, I strongly encourage you to go for a walk along the footpath of Goodwood St. The colours are just beautiful this week.
